00:00Narrator Version 52367.
00:04 You will hear a number of different recordings,
00:06 and you will have to answer questions on what you hear.
00:11 There will be time for you to read the instructions and questions
00:15 and you will have a chance to check your work.
00:18 All the recordings will be played once only.
00:23 The test is in four parts.
00:26 Write all your answers in the listening question booklet.
00:30 At the end of the test,
00:32 you will be given 10 minutes to transfer your answers to an answer sheet.
00:38 Now turn to part one on page two of your question booklet.
00:47 Part One.
00:49 You will hear a school principal talking to a teacher who is going to organize (tổ chức) an art competition (cuộc thi).
00:57 First you have some time to look at questions one to four.
01:21 Now listen carefully and answer questions one to four.
01:28John Hi, John.
01:29Wendy Hi, Wendy.
01:30John Thanks for coming to discuss the school art competition (cuộc thi).
01:32 I know this is your first year organizing (tổ chức) it.
01:35Wendy Well, I've got some ideas,
01:37 but I'd appreciate some help with arrangements (sự sắp xếp).
01:40John Okay.
01:41 We usually divide the competition (cuộc thi) into age groups.
01:44 The first age group is junior students.
01:47Wendy I'll just note that down.
01:49John Last year, we went with a theme (chủ đề) of family.
01:52 That worked very well.
01:53Wendy Yes.
01:54 Something simple is best for young children, I think.
01:58 How about animals this year?
02:00John Sounds good.
02:01 And for the type of art,
02:03 last year children in the junior age group created a drawing.
02:07 Shall we stick with that?
02:08Wendy Yes.
02:09 And for the prize,
02:10 I heard last year we gave cinema tickets to the winner.
02:13 Is that right?
02:14John Yes.
02:15 But, you know,
02:17 it might be nice to give the winners tickets to the zoo this time.
02:20Wendy Good idea.
02:21John Okay.
02:22 Finally for the senior students,
02:24 we also have to think of a theme (chủ đề).
02:26 I've got a couple of ideas.
02:28 One is the future.
02:30Wendy Mm,
02:31 I'm not quite sure how students might approach that theme (chủ đề).
02:34 It could be tricky.
02:36John Um, my other idea was the city.
02:38 What do you think?
02:39Wendy Good.
02:40 Students could get some really interesting images with that theme (chủ đề).
02:44John And for the type of art,
02:45 I think a photograph would work well.
02:47Wendy Great idea.
02:48John And as a prize,
02:50 one of our sponsors (nhà tài trợ) is willing to donate a voucher (phiếu mua hàng) that the winner can spend on travel.
02:54Wendy Fantastic.
02:55 They can find inspiration (cảm hứng) for their next artworks.
03:02Narrator Before you hear the rest of the conversation,
03:05 you have some time to look at questions five to ten.
03:38 Now listen and answer questions five to ten.
03:46Wendy Now, let's discuss some further details of the competition (cuộc thi).
03:49John Sure.
03:50Wendy First of all, the deadline (hạn chót) for submitting (nộp) artwork.
03:53 We want to award the prizes on May the 25th.
03:57John Last year, we needed a week to judge the winners and finalize arrangements (sự sắp xếp) for the awards night.
04:02 How about if entrants submit their artwork by May the 18th?
04:06Wendy Sure.
04:07 I'll just note that down.
04:09 Where should they submit their artworks?
04:11 At the office?
04:12John Actually, there's more space at the library.
04:15 So let's ask students to take their art there.
04:17Wendy Okay.
04:18 In terms of judging (chấm điểm) the competition (cuộc thi),
04:20 what did you do last year?
04:22John We used an excellent local artist.
04:25 We should try and use her again this year.
04:27 Her name is Rebecca Lee.
04:29Wendy Okay.
04:30 Is that L E E?
04:31John No.
04:32 It's L E I G H.
04:36Wendy Right.
04:37 I guess I should also note down her number so that I can get in contact with her after we've finalized the rest of the competition (cuộc thi) details.
04:44John Sure.
04:45 I've got her number here.
04:47 Are you ready?
04:48 It's oh four oh seven,
04:51 six two five,
04:53 four six three three.
04:56Wendy Got it.
04:57John After the judging (chấm điểm),
04:58 where are we going to display the artworks?
05:01Wendy How about we book the Bridge Street Gallery?
05:03 It's a beautiful old building.
05:05John It is.
05:06 So can you go ahead and book it?
05:08Wendy Yes.
05:09 And do you think we should also publish (xuất bản) the artworks in the school magazine?
05:12John Yes, definitely.
05:14 I think the winning students would be delighted to see that.
05:17Wendy Great.
05:18 Now, in terms of the art exhibition (triển lãm) of the students' work,
05:22 should we make it a morning event and follow it up with a special lunch or afternoon tea for parents?
05:28John I was thinking a late afternoon event might be better so that parents can attend (tham dự) after work.
05:34 After the exhibition (triển lãm),
05:35 we could put on a dinner.
05:37 What do you think?
05:38Wendy Yes, that could be nice.
05:40 Now, I wanted to
05:45Narrator That is the end of part one.
05:48 You now have one minute to check your answers to part one.

06:49Narrator Part two.
06:51 You will hear a guide talking to a group of tourists who are going to spend a day on an island.
06:58 First you have some time to look at questions 11 to 14.
07:22 Now listen carefully and answer questions 11 to 14.
07:30Guide Well, morning, everyone.
07:31 Welcome to Palm Island.
07:32 First, I'll run through the plan for the day.
07:36 So, uh,
07:37 the idea is that in the morning you'll go for a walk.
07:40 There are actually a number of different walks on the island,
07:44 so I'll describe each one and then you can choose.
07:48 So there's uh,
07:49 the boundary (ranh giới) walk.
07:51 This is one of the longer walks and it will appeal (thu hút) especially to people who love the coastline (đường bờ biển).
07:56 And in fact, the tide is out today, so it'll be perfect for exploring the very old rock formations (các khối đá) behind the beach.
08:05 A good option is the loop track.
08:07 Now, this is quite short, but don't be misled (bị lừa) by that because it's very hilly (nhiều đồi) and you need to be quite fit.
08:14 The reward though is that you'll be able to see right down the length of the island
08:19 and even across to the mainland (đất liền).
08:21 It'll be pretty as a picture on a fine day like today.
08:25 There's the Pōriri Walk,
08:27 which follows one of the earliest trails (đường mòn) that was built on the island.
08:31 Unfortunately, the track's been damaged slightly by a storm, but it's still passable (có thể đi qua).
08:37 The nice thing is,
08:38 uh, about halfway there's a table and chairs.
08:41 They've recently been restored (phục hồi) and painted in fact.
08:45 And it's a great place to eat your packed lunch and have a rest.
08:49 You could also walk up to North Head.
08:51 This is an inland (nội địa) walk.
08:53 You'll hardly get a glimpse (nhìn thoáng qua) of the sea the whole way,
08:56 but the attraction is you'll pass through a large area of very old native bush (bụi cây bản địa).
09:01 The number of birds is amazing, including several rare species (loài quý hiếm).
09:06 You'll find some are quite tame (thuần hóa),
09:08 but please don't give them any food.
09:13Narrator Before you hear the rest of the talk,
09:16 you have some time to look at questions 15 to 20.
09:49 Now listen and answer questions 15 to 20.
09:57Guide Okay, well, after your walk, the bus will take you to the regional park (công viên khu vực)
10:00 where you can relax for a couple of hours before going home.
10:04 Now, if you look at your maps of the regional park (công viên khu vực),
10:07 I'll just describe a few things you can do.
10:10 Uh,
10:11 so the bus will drop you at the park entrance right at the bottom of the map.
10:16 One interesting place is the bird colony (bầy đàn).
10:19 To get there from the park entrance, you go up the path to the lake.
10:23 About halfway around the east side of the lake,
10:26 you need to turn off and take the path all the way out to the coast.
10:30 You'll find the colony (bầy đàn) there overlooking (nhìn ra) a little island.
10:35 Now, if you'd like a swim,
10:37 remember that not all the beaches are really suitable (phù hợp) in this wind.
10:41 For the safest place,
10:42 follow the path north from the park entrance,
10:45 but before you get to the lake,
10:46 turn right and go down there to the beach.
10:50 Something that people find interesting is the old ship.
10:54 It's more than 100 years old.
10:56 To get there, just north of the park entrance, you take the path which heads towards Okiwi Bay.
11:03 Then walk along the coast a little way before turning right and following that path over to Rocky Bay.
11:09 You'll see the wharf (cầu tàu),
11:10 go past that,
11:12 and the ship is just along there.
11:14 A long walk, but one that's well worth it is up to Stony Batter.
11:19 You follow the path right around the lake to the far side and keep heading north.
11:25 But if you reach the water tower, you've gone too far.
11:29 Before that, you want to turn off to your left and take the path to the coast.
11:34 Now, where else is there?
11:36 Uh,
11:37 oh yes, the settler's monument (đài tưởng niệm người định cư).
11:39 That's popular.
11:41 So from the park entrance,
11:42 take the first path on the left and follow it around behind Okiwi Bay.
11:47 The monument (đài tưởng niệm) is out at the end there on the headland (mũi đất).
11:51 Finally, if all this exercise has made you thirsty, there's a kiosk (quầy hàng) where you can get hot and cold drinks.
11:59 It's easy to find beside the lake,
12:01 right on the water's edge.
12:03 Well, now, if anyone has any questions, feel free
12:11Narrator That is the end of part two.
12:13 You now have 30 seconds to check your answers to part two.

12:45Narrator Part three.
12:47 You will hear two music students discussing the results of a survey (khảo sát) they have done.
12:53 First you have some time to look at questions 21 to 26.
13:27 Now listen carefully and answer questions 21 to 26.
13:35Lorna So Gareth, we need to organize (tổ chức) the findings (kết quả) from our survey (khảo sát) on music students for the final presentation.
13:41Gareth Yes, Lorna.
13:42 I think we've got some very interesting results.
13:45 Obviously, we need to start by saying that we interviewed all the third-year students doing a music degree
13:51 and state the objective (mục tiêu) of our research project,
13:53 that is to find out about their attitudes (thái độ) to performing (biểu diễn).
13:57Lorna And then we should talk about the student's musical backgrounds before coming to university.
14:03 The most important points to make are that although most people have actually composed (sáng tác) music during the course,
14:08 that wasn't the case when they arrived.
14:11 And the other thing they had in common (chung) was the piano.
14:14Gareth Well,
14:15 they'd had access to a piano at some point,
14:17 but not all had studied it formally (chính thức).
14:20 I thought the most interesting finding (kết quả) was that before coming here,
14:24 almost everyone was involved (tham gia) in a chamber orchestra (dàn nhạc thính phòng) or band
14:27 or singing in a choir (dàn hợp xướng) and playing in front of live audiences (khán giả trực tiếp).
14:32Lorna But varying enormously in size.
14:34 Some had only played in tiny venues (địa điểm).
14:37 I think it's worth saying that.
14:39Gareth Okay.
14:40 And as you might expect from people wanting to study music,
14:44 they all had a degree of proficiency (thành thạo) in at least two instruments,
14:48 but in most cases, one of the instruments was dominant (chiếm ưu thế).
14:51Lorna Right.
14:53 We need to talk about attitudes (thái độ) to music practice.
14:56 The most striking (nổi bật) thing here is that even students who you'd expect to practice for hours every day until they get it perfect,
15:04 say it's being terrified of failing (sợ thất bại) that really makes them practice.
15:08 I know I'm the same.
15:09Gareth Me too.
15:11 It's interesting what was said about practicing alone.
15:14 Some people preferred that because they could focus more on their weak points.
15:18Lorna But that wasn't a minority (thiểu số) view.
15:20 What most of them agree on is that there's nothing more rewarding (bổ ích) than mastering (làm chủ) something that's really hard to learn.
15:27Gareth That's right.
15:28 Okay,
15:29 after that, we should talk a bit about the pieces that students select for assessed performances (buổi biểu diễn được đánh giá).
15:35Lorna There wasn't quite so much consensus (sự đồng thuận) on this, was there?
15:38 A few people prefer to do pieces which are relatively (tương đối) unknown,
15:42 while others choose the ones they think will show off their technical ability.
15:46 But they were in the minority (thiểu số).
15:48Gareth Mm.
15:49 I think the first thing to say is that a high percentage said they would always try to learn their pieces by heart (thuộc lòng)
15:55 because it's too easy to get lost if you're trying to read and play when you're nervous.
16:00Lorna Hm, okay.
16:01 And quite a lot of them said it helps to listen to other people playing your chosen piece,
16:06 preferably recordings, but even just other students.
16:13Narrator Before you hear the rest of the discussion,
16:16 you have some time to look at questions 27 to 30.
16:40 Now listen and answer questions 27 to 30.
16:47Lorna So finally, we need to look at the findings (kết quả) for students' attitudes (thái độ) to performing (biểu diễn).
16:52 We should point out that this includes informal and formal public performances
16:58 as well as assessed ones.
16:59Gareth Yes,
17:00 that's important.
17:02 I expected to find that performing (biểu diễn) solo would make students very nervous,
17:06 but in fact, that isn't the case.
17:08Lorna They do find it hugely challenging to start with,
17:11 but they appreciate the challenge and find it stimulating.
17:14Gareth Right.
17:15 I was surprised by what students said about deciding which pieces to perform.
17:20 I thought they'd all say this was easy.
17:22 For me, it's always been quite straightforward.
17:25 Which pieces do I like best,
17:27 and which pieces can I play well?
17:29 And my repertoire is quite limited anyway.
17:32 But the most commonly cited answer was that it took them ages to make their minds up.
17:36Lorna I suppose it's because there are so many factors involved.
17:40 You need to consider your audience,
17:42 the venue (địa điểm),
17:43 the time available to learn the piece,
17:45 especially if it's complicated.
17:48 You need to think about all these things and you can't do that in a hurry.
17:52Gareth That's true.
17:53Lorna Then there's performing (biểu diễn) with musicians from a different genre (thể loại) like a classical musician playing with a jazz group.
18:00 That can be really fun.
18:02Gareth But most of the music students had never even considered it.
18:05Lorna Right.
18:06 For performing (biểu diễn) with musicians who play the same instrument,
18:09 almost everyone put the same thing.
18:12Gareth Yes,
18:12 they all said it was incredibly helpful
18:15 and not at all intimidating (đáng sợ),
18:17 which says a lot for the department's ethos (đặc tính).
18:19Lorna Yes,
18:19 that's a good point.
18:21 Okay, what I think we should sort out now is
18:28Narrator That is the end of part three.
18:30 You now have 30 seconds to check your answers to part three.

19:01Narrator Part four.
19:03 You will hear a zoology lecturer talking about a group of primitive (nguyên thủy) animals called gastropods (động vật chân bụng).
19:12 First you have some time to look at questions 31 to 40.
20:07 Now listen carefully and answer questions 31 to 40.
20:14Lecturer Good morning, everyone.
20:16 In this module (học phần), we've been looking at various field survey (khảo sát thực địa) methods,
20:19 and now I'm going to give you a brief introduction to the specific organism that we'll be focusing on during our first field trip.
20:27 And that's the gastropod (động vật chân bụng).
20:29 Gastropods (động vật chân bụng) are invertebrates (động vật không xương sống).
20:31 They're organisms without a backbone (xương sống),
20:34 and they're more commonly known as snails or if they haven't got a shell,
20:39 slugs (sên).
20:40 Now,
20:41 in terms of their evolution (sự tiến hóa),
20:43 gastropods (động vật chân bụng) go back a long way,
20:45 as with other primitive (nguyên thủy) animals,
20:47 the minerals (khoáng chất) in their body fluids are very similar to the mineral composition (thành phần) of the sea,
20:52 indicating that they began life there,
20:55 and their fossilized remains (hóa thạch) have been found in rocks dating back at least
21:00 500 million years.
21:03 Looking at the physical features of the gastropods (động vật chân bụng),
21:06 well, they all have one muscular (cơ bắp) foot for swimming or walking.
21:11 This foot is lubricated (bôi trơn) with mucus (chất nhầy),
21:13 and it's this that leaves the sticky trail that you see behind snails and slugs (sên).
21:18 They also have an organ called a radula (lưỡi gai),
21:21 which they use for feeding.
21:24 Then, of course, the snails,
21:25 though not the slugs (sên), have a shell.
21:29 In terms of their dimensions (kích thước),
21:31 snail shells in Britain range from the dwarf snail,
21:34 which is 1.5 millimeters long,
21:37 to the Roman snail (ốc sên La Mã), whose shell can be as big as 50 millimeters.
21:42 As well as size variations (sự biến đổi),
21:44 you get a lot of differences in the form of snail shells.
21:48 For example, the majority coil (cuộn) to the right,
21:51 but there are a few that coil (cuộn) to the left.
21:54 Then some shells, for instance, the plated snail,
21:58 have regularly spaced ribs (gân),
22:00 while the prickly snail has prominent spines (gai).
22:04 There are even a number of species with hair on their shells.
22:08 Colors on the shells also vary as do patterns (họa tiết),
22:12 so appearances are really varied (đa dạng).
22:19 Okay.
22:20 Let's turn now to feeding habits.
22:23 Most of you who are gardeners will know to your cost that some gastropods (động vật chân bụng) eat healthy plants (cây khỏe mạnh),
22:29 but you may not realize that these are the minority (thiểu số).
22:33 Most species feed on rotting (thối rữa) plants
22:36 or they eat fungi (nấm) and algae (tảo).
22:39 Some species eat dead animals,
22:42 and there are some that are actually carnivorous (ăn thịt).
22:44 They prey on (săn mồi) live animals.
22:46 For example, the shield slug feeds on worms.
22:50 And apart from their own feeding habits,
22:52 I should point out that gastropods (động vật chân bụng) themselves have plenty of predators (động vật ăn thịt).
22:57 Birds and frogs are the main ones,
23:00 but there's even an entire family of flies that have specialized (chuyên biệt) in preying on (săn mồi) gastropods (động vật chân bụng).
23:06 And, of course, last but not least,
23:09 I should mention human predators (động vật ăn thịt).
23:13 It was the Romans who probably first introduced edible (có thể ăn được) snails into Britain during the first century,
23:18 and they are still eaten today.
23:21 In fact, the collection of wild snails for cooking has caused local extinctions (sự tuyệt chủng cục bộ) of one species,
23:28 which is also under threat (bị đe dọa) internationally.
23:31 So there are lots of predators (động vật ăn thịt),
23:33 but to protect themselves,
23:34 gastropods (động vật chân bụng) have often developed special defenses (sự phòng thủ).
23:39 I'll just give you one example.
23:41 The glutinous (dính) snail avoids predators (động vật ăn thịt) by folding its mantle (áo choàng) over its shell
23:46 and turning itself into a very slippery blob of jelly (khối thạch).
23:51 Well,
23:52 turning now to gastropod (động vật chân bụng) habitats (môi trường sống),
23:55 most species like dampness (ẩm ướt) and shade (bóng râm).
23:59 In general,
24:00 both very hot and very cold weather is bad for gastropods (động vật chân bụng),
24:04 but dry conditions are the least favorable (thuận lợi).
24:07 Snails cope with this by withdrawing (rút vào) into their shells,
24:12 and often they form a thick film of mucus (chất nhầy) over the mouth of their shell to minimize (giảm thiểu) loss of water.
24:18 Habitats (môi trường sống) with a long, stable (ổn định) history tend to support the biggest range of gastropod (động vật chân bụng) species.
24:24 So, for instance, long-established forests usually support more species than new plantations (đồn điền) of trees
24:32 and old, natural meadowland (đồng cỏ) is much better than land which has recently been farmed.
24:37 And there is a small number of highly specialized (chuyên biệt) species that live in unusual habitats (môi trường sống).
24:43 For instance,
24:44 the blind snail spends its whole life buried (chôn) under the ground.
24:48 It's been reported living at depths of two meters,
