00:02 This recording is copyright.
00:06 CD1.
00:09 Test one.
00:12 You will hear a number of different recordings, and you will have to answer questions on what you hear.
00:19 There will be time for you to read the instructions and questions, and you will have a chance to check your work.
00:27 All the recordings will be played once only.
00:31 The test is in four sections.
00:35 Write all your answers in the listening question booklet.
00:40 At the end of the test, you will be given 10 minutes to transfer your answers to an answer sheet.
00:48 Now turn to section one on page two of your question booklet.
00:58 Section One.
01:00 You will hear a woman phoning to make a theatre booking (đặt chỗ).
01:04 First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 4 on page 2.
01:29 You will see that there is an example that has been done for you.
01:34 On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.
01:42Speaker 1 Good morning, Corn Market Theatre.
01:44Speaker 2 Oh, good morning.
01:45 I'd like to ask about making a booking (đặt chỗ) for the performance (buổi biểu diễn) of Pirates.
01:53Narrator The woman would like to make a booking (đặt chỗ) for the performance (buổi biểu diễn) of Pirates.
01:58 So, Pirates has been written in the space.
02:02 Now we shall begin.
02:04 You should answer the questions as you listen because you will not hear the recording a second time.
02:11 Listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 4.
02:18Speaker 1 Good morning, Corn Market Theatre.
02:20Speaker 2 Oh, good morning.
02:21 I'd like to ask about making a booking (đặt chỗ) for the performance (buổi biểu diễn) of Pirates.
02:26Speaker 1 Yes, of course. What day?
02:28Speaker 2 I'd like to make a booking (đặt chỗ) for the afternoon performance (buổi biểu diễn), on December the 8th.
02:33Speaker 1 I'll just check on the computer.
02:36 Good news, your booking's (việc đặt chỗ) well ahead of time, so there are lots of seats (chỗ ngồi) available for that performance (buổi biểu diễn).
02:41Speaker 2 Great.
02:42Speaker 1 Now, if I can just start by taking a few details.
02:45Speaker 2 Yes, of course.
02:46Speaker 1 What's your name, please?
02:48Speaker 2 It's Fenella Bittens.
02:51 B I double T E N S.
02:55Speaker 1 Now, can I take a contact number?
02:57Speaker 2 It's 07796 892 326.
03:05Speaker 1 Lovely. So, how many tickets would you like?
03:07Speaker 2 20, please.
03:09Speaker 1 So that's a group booking (đặt vé theo nhóm).
03:11Speaker 2 Does that mean I get a discount (giảm giá)?
03:13Speaker 1 Yes. Are they all for adults (người lớn)?
03:16Speaker 2 Actually, only three are adults (người lớn).
03:19Speaker 1 Right, so you get a discount (giảm giá) of 10% on those tickets, which makes it 23 pounds per person.
03:26 All the tickets are the same price, wherever you sit.
03:29Speaker 2 And the rest are all under 16.
03:32Speaker 1 Okay, so instead of 15 pounds per person, that'll be 12 pounds 50.
03:37Speaker 2 Oh, that's good.
03:42Narrator Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 5 to 10 on page 2.
04:20 Now listen and answer questions 5 to 10.
04:27Speaker 2 Would you like to sit in the stalls (khán đài)?
04:29Speaker 1 I'd prefer the circle, if that's possible.
04:33 Well, I can give you 20 more or less together, really nice seats (chỗ ngồi) on the middle row.
04:39Speaker 2 No, I think we'd need to be right at the back, actually.
04:43Speaker 1 That's no problem. There are plenty of seats (chỗ ngồi) there.
04:45Speaker 2 That's good, because we have one child who's a wheelchair user.
04:49Speaker 1 Right. Well, we have very good arrangements for our disabled (khuyết tật) customers.
04:54Speaker 2 Well, the main thing is we want to be able to get to the lift easily.
04:58Speaker 1 That won't be any problem.
04:59 I'll put you in for more or less the whole row.
05:02Speaker 2 Good.
05:03 Now, would it be possible to pay for the tickets by credit card (thẻ tín dụng)?
05:07Speaker 1 No problem.
05:08 Do you want me to send you the tickets or pick them up from the box office (phòng vé) at the theatre?
05:13Speaker 2 Parking's (việc đỗ xe) so difficult near the theatre in the daytime.
05:17Speaker 1 Well, we've now got an arrangement that you can pick up tickets in the library (thư viện).
05:21Speaker 2 Hmm, that sounds good.
05:23Speaker 1 Fine. I'll make a note that you'll do that.
05:25Speaker 2 Great.
05:27 Now, I read in a brochure (tờ rơi quảng cáo) that you can also order theatre meals (bữa ăn tại rạp hát).
05:32Speaker 1 That's right. With such a large party, it's probably a good idea if you order what you want in advance.
05:37Speaker 2 Well, I've got a good idea about what everyone would like.
05:41 Could you put me through to the cafe?
05:44Speaker 1 Well, if you want, I can take down the order now.
05:46Speaker 2 That'd be great. Thanks.
05:48Speaker 1 No problem.
05:49Speaker 2 Well, we've got a few children in the group who are vegetarian (người ăn chay).
05:54Speaker 1 Okay. I'll make a note of that.
05:56Speaker 2 And I wanted to check if you do any hot dishes, like pasta (mì ống), for example.
06:02Speaker 1 I'm afraid not, but we do have pizzas (bánh pizza), though.
06:05Speaker 2 Even better. Let's go for those for all of us.
06:08 Um, cheese and tomato.
06:10Speaker 1 Fine.
06:11 And what would everyone like to drink?
06:17Narrator That is the end of Section 1.
06:19 You now have half a minute to check your answers.

06:58Narrator Now turn to Section 2.
07:01 Section 2.
07:02 You will hear a radio program about singing in a choir (dàn hợp xướng).
07:07 First, you have some time to look at questions 11 to 15.
07:12 Now listen carefully and answer questions 11 to 15.
07:18 And for our regular spot on things to do in town, here's our reporter Samuel Cooper.
07:23Samuel Cooper It's been fun to write about joining some of our local choirs (dàn hợp xướng).
07:28 Thank you.
07:29 Well, feeling a bit apprehensive (e ngại) about my ability to sing in tune, I recently headed off for rehearsals (buổi diễn tập) at the town's three biggest choirs (dàn hợp xướng): Mitchell's Town Choir, the Black Bell Male Voice Choir, and the Caroline Singers.
07:46 I received a very warm welcome at all three choirs (dàn hợp xướng).
07:50 They are always on the lookout for new and enthusiastic (nhiệt tình) singers.
07:55 Now, obviously deciding which choir (dàn hợp xướng) to join will depend to some extent on your taste in music.
08:02 Black Bell caters for most musical tastes as it has a hugely varied repertoire (tiết mục), as does Mitchell's Town.
08:10 If you're after a more classical (cổ điển) feel, the Caroline Singers tend to focus on madrigals (khúc nhạc hợp xướng).
08:16 That's unaccompanied (không có nhạc đệm) singing without any instruments.
08:20 If you want to meet people who share an interest in music, Mitchell's Town Choir is a good place to start.
08:27 Apart from their own performances, they also arrange group visits to see operas (vở nhạc kịch) and attend music festivals (lễ hội âm nhạc).
08:35 So it can be a great way to make friends.
08:38 But it's not just a chance to develop a skill, travel or make friends that's on offer.
08:44 You could win a gold medal too.
08:47 Mitchell's Town are hoping to get to the final at the Melody competition in Atlanta.
08:53 And Black Bell are the current holders of the counter male voice choir (dàn hợp xướng) award, which was presented to them by the director of the London Opera just last month.
09:04 You can also be a part of a recording deal.
09:07 Mitchell's Town has just joined Black Bell and Caroline Singers as recording artists for their first CD, due in shops in December.
09:17 And if all of that isn't enough, you can also benefit the local community by helping to raise funds for good causes.
09:25 Mitchell's Town regularly performs at functions helping the disabled (người khuyết tật) and the elderly (người cao tuổi).
09:31 While Black Bell donates a percentage of its profits to certain local charities (tổ chức từ thiện).
09:36Narrator Before you hear the rest of the program, you have some time to look at questions 16 to 20.
09:44 Now listen and answer questions 16 to 20.
09:50Samuel Cooper You may feel unable to join a choir (dàn hợp xướng) because you're worried you'd struggle to find the time to attend rehearsals (buổi diễn tập) because of work or family commitments (cam kết).
09:59 Well, there is a solution to that.
10:03 Start your own choir (dàn hợp xướng) at work.
10:06 This has been done in companies large and small, and I went to find out about the one at the accountants (kế toán viên) John White.
10:14 The choir's (dàn hợp xướng) organizer, Elizabeth Arnold, told me the reason she thinks people like the choir (dàn hợp xướng).
10:20 She said that while the thought of a big networking (giao lưu) opportunities might be at the back of some people's mind, it's having the opportunity to switch off and focus on something completely different that they're after.
10:36 The people that join tend to be fairly competent (có năng lực) singers to start with because, naturally enough, people don't want to look bad in front of their colleagues (đồng nghiệp).
10:46 Companies like John White encourage their employees to set up choirs (dàn hợp xướng) at work because it can help to create a healthier working atmosphere (không khí).
10:55 For example, people who previously didn't get on can find they have something in common.
11:02 Which is just common sense, really.
11:05 Elizabeth Arnold also stresses that you don't need a lot of people to get the choir (dàn hợp xướng) off the ground.
11:11 They started off four years ago with just five people.
11:16 That's now risen to 19, while their average attendance at rehearsals (buổi diễn tập) is 12.
11:23 Many people don't have time to go to rehearsals (buổi diễn tập) outside work, however, they find the time to go to them while they're at work.
11:31 At John White, they found the middle of the day works best because not everyone works the same hours.
11:38 So, scheduling early morning rehearsals (buổi diễn tập) can be problematic.
11:44 The same is true for late afternoon.
11:47 Supporting their choir (dàn hợp xướng) is something that John White are very happy to do.
11:52 Although members pay a joining fee to cover the cost of refreshments (đồ ăn nhẹ) at parties and wear special concert shirts, the company organizes regular sessions with a professional vocal coach (huấn luyện viên thanh nhạc) free of charge to members of the choir (dàn hợp xướng).
12:07 So, if you'd like more information about the choir (dàn hợp xướng)...

12:12Narrator That is the end of section 2. You now have half a minute to check your answers.
12:18 Section 3.
12:19 You will hear two students called Eva and Mike discussing their research project on tourism.
12:26 First, you have some time to look at questions 21 to 26.
12:32 Now listen carefully and answer questions 21 to 26.
12:38Mike Hi Eva.
12:39 Is this a good time for us to look at our research project?
12:42 Our tutor (gia sư) told us to keep the focus narrow.
12:46 So, what about we go for why people choose to go to certain places and attractions and leave the rest out?
12:53Eva You're right.
12:54 Otherwise we'll have far too much information to cope with.
12:59 Okay, so what about the survey?
13:02Mike Well, I've looked through the ideas we had for questions for it, and I think it's not clear how we use the word area.
13:10 Sometimes it seems to mean a place, other times the field of our research, and even tourist attraction in some cases.
13:18Eva Oh, I think that's my fault.
13:20 I typed out our notes.
13:22Mike Oh.
13:23 It's probably best to use it for place, in the sense of province (tỉnh) or whatever.
13:29Eva Yes, I think so.
13:31 You know, we decided to concentrate on culture and tourism.
13:35 I wonder if we're really saying culture in the same way as most people do, because on our list of places to carry out our surveys, I see you've put the Round Music Festival, which is contemporary (đương đại) music.
13:49 I thought we were going to be looking at more traditional (truyền thống) forms of culture.
13:54Mike That would be confirming these old-fashioned ideas that culture has to be something that's at least 100 years old.
14:02Eva But that is what most people think.
14:04Mike Well, let's not get into an argument about that right now.
14:08 Let's think about the number of completed questionnaires (bảng câu hỏi) we need.
14:12 In total, how many questionnaires (bảng câu hỏi) do you think we have to get? 100? 200?
14:19 And over how many different events?
14:22Eva Hmm. Our tutor (gia sư) said we should have at least 200.
14:27 Otherwise the information won't actually mean that much.
14:31 And I think it's not practical to try to go to more than about five events.
14:35 We've got to get the first draft (bản nháp) in by the end of February.
14:40Mike And do you think we should interview everybody, or just tourists?
14:44Eva Hmm. Because presumably there'd be local people, domestic (nội địa) tourists and international (quốc tế) tourists at some events.
14:52Mike In fact, the more I think about it, the more I think we should just go for the tourists.
14:57 But from overseas (nước ngoài) as well as national.
15:01 I'm sure we'd be able to provide more interesting results if we did that.
15:06Eva Right.
15:07Mike There's one thing that worries me, though.
15:10Eva What's that?
15:11Mike We said it's important to get some background (thông tin nền) on the people who answer our questions, like what's their job, what they thought about the event.
15:21 But the idea of asking people how old they are...
15:24Eva Hmm. We can just ask them to tick a box with an age in it, and tell them they don't have to do it if they don't want to.
15:33 We could write in our own estimate (ước tính) when we finished.
15:36Mike Are you sure that would be okay?
15:38Eva Yes, it's not the most crucial piece of information they're giving.
15:43 We're going to have a lot of facts and figures to present.
15:47 Have you any preference for putting them into a pie chart (biểu đồ tròn), a table (bảng), or a graph (biểu đồ)?
15:52Mike Tables (bảng) are easy to do, but I read that most people find pie charts (biểu đồ tròn) visually stimulating (kích thích thị giác).
15:59 I hate reading graphs (biểu đồ) because, unless they're quite big, you don't get exact figures.
16:05Eva Pie charts (biểu đồ tròn) sounds good.
16:07 How are we going to divide up the work?
16:10Mike If it's okay with you, I'd like us to meet as often as possible to look at what we've each written up.
16:17 But we should do the actual writing on our own.
16:21Narrator Before you hear the rest of the discussion, you have some time to look at questions 27 to 30.
16:28 Now listen and answer questions 27 to 30.
16:34Mike Okay. Would this be a good time to discuss our introduction?
16:38 An overview (tổng quan) of tourism around the world, looking at different tourist attractions (điểm thu hút) in different countries.
16:45 But there are so many to choose from, though, so let's narrow it down.
16:50Eva Absolutely.
16:51Mike I found out that Mexico celebrates the fact that it produces a huge number of varieties of chillies and people flock to this special event to taste dishes using them.
17:03 A lot of people think of Mexico as being the best place to see fantastic museums.
17:09Eva That's true, but let's take a different tack.
17:13 What about Greece? One of the world's most famous countries for tourists.
17:18Mike Yes, and I think we should go for the ruins (tàn tích) in this case.
17:22 The temples and theatres and so on, rather than the food.
17:27Eva And for Britain, instead of focusing on the countryside (nông thôn) and the parks, I'd like to find out more about why people go to see plays and musicals (nhạc kịch).
17:37 Is it because there's such a good choice?
17:40Mike Hmm, interesting point.
17:42Eva And for India, instead of concentrating on the temples or the game parks, we could mention all the different folk dances (điệu múa dân gian).
17:51 Every region has its own and they don't just perform them at festivals.
17:56 They're part of everyday life.
17:58Mike Okay, we've got more than enough. Let's draft the introduction.

18:04Narrator That is the end of part three. You now have half a minute to check your answers.
18:08 Now listen carefully and answer questions 31 to 40.
18:12Speaker 1 I'm a past student of this university, and I'm joining some others on this career day to tell you about my job, as it may be something you've never thought of doing.
18:24 I'm a patent attorney (luật sư bằng sáng chế).
18:26 Some of you probably know what that is, but for those of you that don't, I'll explain.
18:32 If someone has a new idea or invention (phát minh), they can ask for a patent.
18:37 It gives the owner (chủ sở hữu) the right to stop other people from using that invention (phát minh).
18:42 A patent is granted by the government to inventors, or more usually these days to a company.
18:50 It is for a certain time period, usually a maximum of 20 years.
18:56 So during that period, that idea or invention (phát minh) cannot be claimed to have been invented by someone else.
19:03 The likelihood of getting a patent is dependent on whether the invention (phát minh) is original or not.
19:09 This is the crucial factor.
19:12 It will be looked at by a patent examiner (giám định viên bằng sáng chế), and my job is to convince (thuyết phục) the examiner that the invention (phát minh) is not just an adjustment to something which already exists.
19:24 In order to get the patent, we need to produce a full description of the invention (phát minh).
19:29 It's really important to get the details right.
19:33 Most of you are scientists and the basic requirement of the job is a solid academic background (nền tảng học thuật).
19:40 Often people have studied chemistry (hóa học) or alternatively, engineering (kỹ thuật).
19:46 Because of the nature of the work, this is a crucial starting point.
19:50 You need to be able to understand how the inventions (phát minh) have come about.
19:55 On top of that, employers are looking for particular kinds of people.
19:59 They want employees who have excellent communication skills (kỹ năng giao tiếp).
20:04 So you can talk to inventors in terms that they can understand and also ask the right questions.
20:11 These aren't necessarily skills you're taught at university.
20:16 This is an international business, as are most nowadays, and it's very convenient to be able to read documents without having to call for translations (bản dịch).
20:26 So, if you can understand a foreign language, that's a great asset (tài sản quý giá).
20:32 You might think it sounds a bit boring from what I've said, but it really isn't.
20:37 There are lots of advantages to the job.
20:40 It's extremely interesting for a start.
20:43 For example, I feel I use a range of expertise (chuyên môn).
20:48 I'm not just a scientist, not just a lawyer, but a mixture of the two.
20:54 Although it takes quite a long time to qualify (đủ điều kiện) as a patent attorney (luật sư bằng sáng chế), anything from four to six years, after that, you can earn a high salary which compares very well with other similar professions.
21:07 There are some disadvantages (bất lợi), of course.
21:10 It can be rather lonely as you tend to sit in front of a computer for most of the day.
21:16 Even if you have colleagues, you will all be working separately.
21:21 And there isn't very much flexibility (linh hoạt) with location.
21:25 Almost all vacancies (vị trí trống) for trainees (thực tập sinh) are city-based.
21:30 So if that doesn't appeal to you, you might want to think again.
21:34 You do get to travel a bit to meetings with clients.
21:38 And there are also visits to court.
21:41 So what kind of organization might you end up working in?
21:45 Well, many people work in industrial (công nghiệp) companies.
21:49 The big ones have their own patent departments.
21:53 The kind of product you might work with there will range from food to heavy equipment.
21:59 From biotechnology (công nghệ sinh học) to the car industry.
22:03 Basically, any organization where significant time and money is put into research and development (nghiên cứu và phát triển) to get ahead of the market.
22:12 There are also many private practices (công ty tư nhân).
22:16 And some of these will have areas of special interest.
22:20 Finally, it's possible to get a job in various government offices.
22:25 In those departments, you'll probably be looking at applications for patents and making decisions about them.
22:33 I really love my job, so I hope I've persuaded a few of you that it's worth thinking about.
22:39 If anyone wants to come and ask questions, I'm happy to answer them.
