00:00Narrator You will hear a number of different recordings,
00:03 and you will have to answer questions on what you hear.
00:07 There will be time for you to read the instructions and questions,
00:11 and you will have a chance to check your work.
00:14 All the recordings will be played once only.
00:18 The test is in four parts.
00:22 Write all your answers in the listening question booklet.
00:26 At the end of the test,
00:27 you will be given 10 minutes to transfer your answers to an answer sheet.
00:34 Now turn to Part one on page two of your question booklet.
00:43 Part One.
00:44 You will hear a woman talking to a member of staff at a gym about joining the gym.
00:51 First, you have some time to look at questions one to four.
01:19 Now listen carefully and answer questions one to four.
01:26Staff Good morning.
01:27 Can I help you?
01:28Jean Yes, actually.
01:29 I'm interested in joining your gym.
01:31 So I thought I'd come and find out about your membership options (lựa chọn thành viên).
01:35Staff Why don't you take a seat and I'll just get the form and a pen.
01:38Jean Thanks.
01:39Staff Now, your full name, please?
01:41Jean It's Jean Simpson.
01:42Staff Right, Jean.
01:44 Is that Simpson with a P?
01:45Jean Yes.
01:47Staff Right, Jean.
01:49 Date of birth?
01:49Jean The 24th of August, 1979.
01:53Staff And where do you live?
01:54Jean 70 Fox Lane.
01:57Staff Is that Fox as in the animal?
01:58Jean Yes.
01:59 And it's Surface Paradise, 4167.
02:04Staff Do you have a home phone number, Jean?
02:06Jean Yes, it's 3378 4150.
02:09Staff Great.
02:10 Now that we have that information, I'll tell you about the membership plans we offer,
02:15 and you can select a payment option that suits you.
02:17Jean That sounds good.
02:18Staff Our two most popular payment options are yearly and monthly.
02:22 The yearly membership fee works out as being about $11 per week.
02:27 On the monthly plan, you pay slightly more each week.
02:30 By the way, this month, with both of these options, we're offering a free gym outfit.
02:35Jean That's great.
02:36 I think I'll go for the yearly option.
02:39 The initial outlay (chi phí ban đầu) is more, but I'm mostly interested in getting in shape,
02:44 and that option will help keep me coming, even if I don't like it.
02:47 I should be fit by the end.
02:49Staff Fair enough.
02:50 The yearly option it is then.
02:51 Have you got any questions or concerns?
02:53Jean Yes.
02:55 I'm going away for a month and I won't be able to come to the gym during that time.
02:59Staff Lots of people have this problem when they go on holiday.
03:02 We can just suspend (tạm dừng) your gym membership for that month.
03:05Jean That's a relief.
03:06 It won't be until July, and it's for work actually,
03:09 but next year I'm going overseas to my friend's wedding, so can I suspend (tạm dừng) my membership for a couple of weeks then as well?
03:16Staff No problem.
03:17 Just tell us about that closer to the date of your departure (khởi hành).
03:23Narrator Before you hear the rest of the conversation,
03:25 you have some time to look at questions 5 to 10.
03:59 Now listen and answer questions 5 to 10.
04:06Staff I'll tell you about the facilities (cơ sở vật chất) we offer here.
04:08 We offer a range of group fitness classes such as body step, body tone and body balance.
04:14Jean They all sound very interesting,
04:15 but I can't see myself ever going to a class.
04:18Staff Well, if that's not an option, perhaps you should try some general weight training (tập tạ) exercises in the gym.
04:24 Our instructors are fully trained and very good at helping new members to feel comfortable.
04:29 Everybody is encouraged to go at their own pace.
04:32Jean I like the sound of that.
04:33 I wouldn't have to get fit first, would I?
04:36 I could just start straight away?
04:37Staff That's right.
04:38 Let me tell you about the other services we offer.
04:41 Are you interested in doing any water-based training?
04:43Jean Mmm...
04:45Staff Well, we have an Olympic-sized swimming pool where you can do aqua aerobics (thể dục nhịp điệu dưới nước) classes.
04:50 That's group exercise in the swimming pool, or we can develop a personal swimming plan (kế hoạch bơi cá nhân) to suit your needs.
04:56Jean Aqua aerobics (thể dục nhịp điệu dưới nước) doesn't really appeal to me.
04:59 I'm really not very keen on fixed classes,
05:03 but working on my own swimming regime would be okay in a few months when I'm a bit fitter, I suppose.
05:08Staff Fine.
05:09 We also have a sauna (phòng tắm hơi) where you can relax after a strong workout.
05:12Jean That's not my idea of relaxing.
05:14 Saunas are just too hot for me.
05:17Staff Many people feel that way, I must say.
05:19 One other facility we offer is our child-minding service (dịch vụ trông trẻ).
05:22 It's available to our members at $5 per child.
05:26Jean Well, my husband will be working at home for the first few months,
05:30 so he'll be able to look after the baby when I'm exercising.
05:33 But once he goes back to work,
05:35 I'll probably be using that service.
05:38Staff Right.
05:38 If you don't have any questions, let's finalize (hoàn tất) things.
05:41 We can arrange payment and make an entry key for you to use whenever you come to the gym.
05:49Narrator That is the end of Part One.
05:51 You now have 45 seconds to check your answers to Part One.

06:41Narrator Part Two.
06:41 You will hear a woman talking on a radio program about a festival (lễ hội) that is about to take place.
06:48 First, you have some time to look at questions 11 to 18.
07:32 Now listen carefully and answer questions 11 to 18.
07:40Host I have in the studio with me Mary Smith from Yorktown Tourism,
07:44 who is here to tell us about some of the events happening in our state capital over the next three weeks at the Spring Festival (Lễ hội mùa xuân).
07:50 So, Mary, what can we expect to see?
07:54Mary Well, it's such an exciting time to be in Yorktown.
07:58 To kick off (khởi động) the Spring Festival (Lễ hội mùa xuân),
08:00 there will be a huge firework display (màn trình diễn pháo hoa) down by the lake,
08:03 starting at 9:00 p.m. this Saturday, the 4th of September.
08:08 Over 10,000 fireworks will be set off,
08:11 all choreographed to music and broadcast simultaneously (đồng thời) here on Radio Yorkie.
08:18 You should get there early if you want to get close to the action.
08:21 So, bring along a picnic and a blanket,
08:25 as it could get chilly in the evening.
08:28 One of the things that attracts visitors to the festival (lễ hội) from all over the country
08:32 is the amazing collection (bộ sưu tập) of flowers on show in Central Park throughout the festival (lễ hội).
08:39 Special buses (xe buýt) will run from the town centre to the show at 20-minute intervals (khoảng thời gian) for those of you who prefer to take public transport.
08:48 If you're interested in seeing the latest in cars,
08:51 from the fastest to the most expensive,
08:54 then head over to the motor show at the exhibition center (trung tâm triển lãm)
08:58 from the 10th to the 15th of September.
09:02 It'll be open daily from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.
09:07 so you can even pop there after work.
09:09 Do you like photography (nhiếp ảnh)?
09:11 Then go along to Grow Your Imagination,
09:15 an exhibition (triển lãm) of photographs of famous gardens,
09:19 which will be held at the Art Gallery from the 11th to the 19th of September.
09:25 Come and be inspired (truyền cảm hứng) by some of the world's most beautiful gardens.
09:30 I've had a sneak preview of some of the photographs,
09:32 and they are magnificent (tráng lệ).
09:35 If music is more your scene,
09:37 then you should come and hear the Australian Philharmonic Orchestra (dàn nhạc giao hưởng) performing Swing in Spring at the concert hall on Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th of September.
09:49 It's a celebration of dance music from the 1940s and 50s.
09:54 There'll be three performances,
09:56 both evening start at 7:00 p.m.,
09:59 and a matinee performance (suất diễn buổi chiều) at 2:30 on the Saturday.
10:03 So, get your dancing shoes on and head there.
10:06 It's guaranteed (được đảm bảo) to get your feet tapping.
10:12Narrator Before you hear the rest of the program,
10:14 you have some time to look at questions 19 and 20.
10:33 Now listen and answer questions 19 and 20.
10:41Mary Those are just a few of the attractions (điểm thu hút) on offer.
10:44 But for something a little different,
10:46 you could try Balloons Down Under,
10:49 which is the largest gathering (tụ họp) of hot air balloons in the Southern Hemisphere (Bán cầu Nam).
10:54 It's well worth it,
10:55 because there'll be over 25 balloons of all shapes and sizes,
11:01 which is a truly amazing sight.
11:04 I'm also happy to announce that one lucky person will get the chance to go up in one of these balloons absolutely free.
11:12 That's the prize in our special Spring Festival (Lễ hội mùa xuân) competition.
11:17 It'd normally cost you $200.
11:20 So, it's not a bad prize, eh?
11:22 I'm sure you all want a chance to win,
11:25 so you'll need to fill out the entry form in today's edition of the Yorktown News.
11:31 Don't forget to include your phone number,
11:34 and send it to Radio Yorkie.
11:37 Make sure your entry reaches us by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, the 9th of September.
11:43 Then to see if you've won,
11:45 just check out the festival's website on Saturday, the 11th of September,
11:50 where we'll publish the name of the lucky winner.
11:53 It's such a fantastic prize,
11:55 so hurry up and get your entry in.
11:58 So there you have it.
12:01 Just a few of the special events happening here in Yorktown over the Spring Festival (Lễ hội mùa xuân).
12:07 And if you'd like any more details about the festival (lễ hội),
12:13Narrator That is the end of Part Two.
12:15 You now have 45 seconds to check your answers to Part Two.

13:05Narrator Following instructions from their tutor, you will hear two students called Jeff and Christine discussing their journalism course and their work experience placements in local government.
13:17 First, you have some time to look at questions 21 to 24.
13:51 Now listen carefully and answer questions 21 to 24.
13:58Tutor Okay,
13:59 for the next task, I'd like you to work in pairs and review (xem xét) your journalism course and discuss how you think it might be improved.
14:08 After that, I'd like you to discuss and evaluate (đánh giá) the work placement (thực tập) you've just completed.
14:14Christine Okay, well, Jeff,
14:15 I'd say we both enjoyed studying about current problems and concerns nationally (trên toàn quốc) and locally (ở địa phương) in the course.
14:22 That was really well covered.
14:25Jeff Right.
14:26Christine I'll tell you what.
14:27 I really got a lot out of the techniques of writing module (học phần),
14:31 which I managed to apply in our placement (thực tập).
14:33 What I took away from that module (học phần) was how to organize my written work.
14:38Jeff That was useful.
14:39Christine But I must admit, when my work colleagues asked me to explain grammar to them,
14:44 I was hopeless.
14:45Jeff I guess I was a bit better at that.
14:48 I was looking forward to the part of the module (học phần) on writing summaries (tóm tắt),
14:52 but unfortunately, we never got to that.
14:55Christine But Jeff, you found the module (học phần) on interviewing techniques particularly useful in the placement (thực tập), didn't you?
15:01 Did it help when you were writing press releases for the government?
15:04Jeff I never had to conduct interviews for that,
15:07 but I did have to interview people for the in-house newsletter (bản tin nội bộ),
15:11 so it came in handy there.
15:13 When the manager asked me to get background information for her,
15:17 it was always just from written material, though.
15:21Christine Let's talk a bit about the module (học phần) we had on online journalism.
15:26 Do you think they could add anything to that course to make it better for the placements (thực tập)?
15:30 I was really disappointed that there wasn't more in the module (học phần) about how writing materials to be used online differ from, say, newspaper writing in terms of vocabulary, structure and so on.
15:43Jeff That was a shame.
15:45 I did get a lot out of the practical work we did on dealing with online questions from the public.
15:51Christine And the technical stuff on web design was just about right.
15:55Jeff Before we started our placements (thực tập), the tutor asked us to read the book Government and the Press.
16:01 I liked it, and since it was published just this year, it was quite current (hiện hành).
16:07 But it dealt with national affairs and wasn't applicable (có thể áp dụng) locally (ở địa phương).
16:12Christine I thought it was a good book and practical,
16:14 but not much help for local government.
16:16Jeff No, that's why I didn't use it at all.
16:22Narrator Before you hear the rest of the discussion,
16:24 you have some time to look at questions 25 to 30.
16:59 Now listen and answer questions 25 to 30.
17:05Christine So let's talk about our experience of actually doing the work placement (thực tập).
17:10 For example, what did you think of the manager in the public relations department (phòng quan hệ công chúng)?
17:15Jeff Well, she actually didn't seem to know a lot about our journalism course.
17:21Christine Even though she had obviously thought a lot about how to use us best for the placement (thực tập).
17:26Jeff But actually, she was extremely busy,
17:29 and I didn't see much of her.
17:31Christine Me neither.
17:32 But one of her great strengths seemed to be in getting people to carry out what she asked them to do.
17:38 Her assistant actually supervised (giám sát) us in our daily activities,
17:41 and he was brilliant.
17:44 But the manager had actually been recruited (tuyển dụng) recently from outside,
17:48 and she didn't know many people in local government or the press.
17:52Jeff True.
17:53Christine Now, of all your duties, which did you dislike most?
17:58 I found it hard when colleagues asked me to edit (chỉnh sửa) their writing.
18:02Jeff Yes, it was hard criticizing them.
18:05 I didn't mind writing policy documents (tài liệu chính sách) for the manager,
18:08 or articles for the in-house newsletter (bản tin nội bộ), which was actually pretty easy.
18:13Christine And I enjoyed going online to look up things for the manager,
18:17 but when we had to give speeches to students in town, that was agony.
18:22 I'm always nervous standing in front of an audience.
18:25Jeff Oh, me too.
18:27Christine Okay.
18:28 Now, our written report of the work placement (thực tập) is due in about 10 days.
18:33 What do you think we need to do to finish it?
18:36Jeff Well, we've already put together the government papers to attach to the report,
18:41 and we've each provided a detailed description of our jobs.
18:45 We have to complete the academic (học thuật) bibliography (thư mục),
18:48 which I think we've both been putting off.
18:50Christine For sure.
18:52Jeff But we finished the recommendations (khuyến nghị) for improving the program,
18:56 so that leaves the introduction,
18:58 which we're meeting this week to draft.
19:00Christine And that'll be it.
19:05Narrator That is the end of Part Three.
19:07 You now have 30 seconds to check your answers to Part Three.

19:41Narrator Part Four.
19:43 You will hear part of a presentation about seed banks (ngân hàng hạt giống) by a botanical (thực vật học) scientist.
19:47 First, you have some time to look at questions 31 to 40.
20:41 Now listen carefully and answer questions 31 to 40.
20:48Speaker Hello.
20:50 Today, there are nearly 2,000 seed banks (ngân hàng hạt giống) in the world.
20:54 Seed banks (ngân hàng hạt giống) are places where seeds from millions of different plants are stored to keep them safe for the future.
21:01 Today, I'd like to tell you a little bit about seed banks (ngân hàng hạt giống) and how and why they are used.
21:09 So, let's look at some history and we'll start in ancient Mesopotamia (nền văn minh Lưỡng Hà) around 8,000 BC.
21:17 This was when the ancient Mesopotamians (người Lưỡng Hà) started to practice agriculture.
21:22 They were the first to do so, as far as we know.
21:26 Every year, they would harvest (thu hoạch) their crops for food,
21:30 but they also used some of these crops to make clothing.
21:34 As well as this, they also collected the seeds,
21:37 so they would have crops for the following year or years.
21:42 Thanks to archaeologists (nhà khảo cổ học),
21:44 we now know how these seeds were stored.
21:47 When examining ancient settlements (khu định cư) in Mesopotamia (nền văn minh Lưỡng Hà),
21:51 archaeologists (nhà khảo cổ học) found the precious seeds underground, stored in baskets.
21:58 After much examination,
22:00 they concluded that in order to protect the seeds,
22:03 they were combined with large quantities (số lượng) of ash (tro) from old fires before being buried.
22:10 Archaeologists (nhà khảo cổ học) wanted to establish why seeds were buried underground,
22:16 and concluded the most likely threat was posed by animals who might have found them a good food source.
22:23 Today, there are many more reasons why we need to protect seeds,
22:27 and that's why we have sophisticated facilities (cơ sở vật chất phức tạp) like seed banks (ngân hàng hạt giống).
22:32 Seed banks (ngân hàng hạt giống) provide a type of insurance (bảo hiểm) against the very damaging effects (tác động gây hại) that climate change is bringing to the natural world.
22:40 Extreme weather events like floods can wipe out (xóa sổ) entire crops.
22:46 Seed banks (ngân hàng hạt giống) are also necessary because they can help to reduce the crop losses that can result if a disease occurs in a certain type of plant.
22:56 Importantly too, seed banks (ngân hàng hạt giống) allow scientists to discover how different plants can be used in the production of medicine.
23:05 Many plants have healing properties that we are only just now beginning to understand,
23:11 and having banks of seeds means that we will, hopefully, always have them around to study and use.
23:18Narrator That is the end of the listening test.
23:23Speaker Scientists need to be able to identify the plants and maintain accurate records.
23:28 For this reason, each sample collected is then assigned a special code,
23:33 which scientists around the world can recognize.
23:37 The seeds need, of course, to be cleaned.
23:40 There are many different ways of doing this.
23:43 Whichever technique is used,
23:45 this process occurs in an environmentally controlled room in which the temperature is kept constant.
23:52 Furthermore, the humidity (độ ẩm) is strictly monitored to make sure it doesn't change too much.
23:58 All of this helps to ensure the quality of the specimen (mẫu vật).
24:03 The seeds need then to be stored in a safe environment.
24:07 To do this, scientists freeze the seeds at very low temperatures,
24:12 about minus 20 degrees Celsius.
24:15 Then the scientists place these frozen seeds in specially designed airtight canisters (hộp kín khí).
24:21 And they do this in order to protect the seeds from contamination (ô nhiễm),
24:25 something we really don't want.
24:28 One thing that might surprise you about seed banks (ngân hàng hạt giống)
24:31 is that they don't just contain edible (ăn được) plants.
24:35 Scientists also include plants that are known to be poisonous (có độc),
24:38 and which can cause sickness,
24:41 as these plants might one day be useful.
24:45 Although governments have financed (tài trợ) the setting up of some of these seed banks (ngân hàng hạt giống),
24:49 they're expensive to run,
24:51 and many require ongoing donations (quyên góp) from the public to help support them.
24:56 Okay, let me now tell you...
25:01Narrator That is the end of Part Four.
25:04 You now have one minute to check your answers to Part Four.
26:07 That is the end of the listening test.
26:10 You now have 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the listening answer sheet.
