00:01Narrator IELTS Listening Version K0009. You will hear a number of different recordings, and you will have to answer questions on what you hear.
00:13 There will be time for you to read the instructions and questions, and you will have a chance to check your work.
00:18 All the recordings will be played once only.
00:21 The test is in four sections.
00:23 Write all your answers in the listening question booklet.
00:26 At the end of the test, you will be given 10 minutes to transfer your answers to an answer sheet.
00:41 Now turn to Section 1 on page two of your question booklet.
00:50 Section 1. You will hear a telephone conversation about Winsham Farm, a residential (nội trú) education centre.
00:59 First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 4 on page two.
01:24 You will see that there is an example that has been done for you.
01:27 On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.
01:37Receptionist Hello, Winsham Farm Centre.
01:40Man Oh, hello. I want to arrange a weekend away for myself and some people from work, and we heard about your centre.
01:47 I wonder if you could give me some details.
01:50Receptionist Yes, certainly. We are a residential (nội trú) centre attached to a working farm, and we organise educational activities for those guests who want them.
02:00 Um, what else would you like to know?
02:06Narrator The caller wishes to arrange a weekend away for himself and some colleagues (đồng nghiệp), so option C has been circled.
02:15 Now we shall begin. You should answer the questions as you listen because you will not hear the recording a second time.
02:24 Listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 4.
02:31Receptionist Hello, Winsham Farm Centre.
02:34Man Oh, hello. I want to arrange a weekend away for myself and some people from work, and we heard about your centre.
02:40 I wonder if you could give me some details.
02:44Receptionist Yes, certainly. We are a residential (nội trú) centre attached to a working farm, and we organise educational activities for those guests who want them.
02:54 Um, what else would you like to know?
02:58Man Well, firstly, what kind of accommodation (chỗ ở) have you got?
03:02Receptionist We've got eight rooms altogether, and we can sleep 38 at any one time.
03:07 Three of the rooms have got six bunks and five of them have got four bunks.
03:13Man Right. And what other facilities (cơ sở vật chất) are there?
03:16Receptionist We have separate toilets and showers for each of the rooms.
03:19 There's a large dining room and a large meeting room, which can be booked by groups in advance, but I'm afraid we had a flood in there last month, and the floor was slightly damaged (bị hư hỏng), so unfortunately (thật không may) it's out of use just now.
03:34 We've got workmen coming in next week. When were you thinking of staying?
03:40Man In three weeks' time, the 28th of September.
03:43Receptionist Oh, it should be okay by then.
03:45Man Oh, well, that's okay then. Uh, and what about food? Do you provide meals, or is it self-catering (tự phục vụ nấu nướng)?
03:52Receptionist We're very flexible. As long as you give us enough notice, we can cater for you, or if you prefer, you can just bring your own food and use the kitchen facilities.
04:03 And some people prefer to eat out, which is also fine.
04:07Man Fine. And I heard that your farm is organic. Does that mean that you only have crops and no animals?
04:15Receptionist It doesn't actually. A lot of people seem to think that, but we do rear livestock as well, and so we have a wide range of food.
04:23 Organic means it's all produced without the use of artificial (nhân tạo) fertilisers (phân bón) or pesticides (thuốc trừ sâu).
04:30Man I see. That sounds good. Um, could you tell me what sort of recreational (giải trí) activities are available, either at the centre or in the area?
04:39Receptionist Yes. Here at the centre, we offer farm tours. They're very popular.
04:45 One of the farm managers shows people around and explains some of the principles of organic farming.
04:51 And for any visitors who are really keen, he'll let them drive a tractor or feed the animals, and so on, with supervision (sự giám sát), of course.
05:00Man I think a lot of our group would be interested in that. It'd make a change from factory work.
05:05Receptionist Well, if they fancy it, tell them to come prepared. Plenty of old clothing, especially footwear. It can be very messy and wet.
05:15Man Okay, I'll warn them.
05:18Narrator Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 5 to 10 on page three.
05:57 Now listen and answer questions 5 to 10.
06:04Man And another type of activity we do is survival courses, but that's only for groups of five or more, and they've got to be acquaintances (người quen).
06:12 They have to cooperate (hợp tác) closely.
06:14 These courses are very popular, especially with school groups, but adults seem to enjoy them too.
06:22 What do they involve? Things like map reading?
06:25Receptionist Well, not exactly. What it is, we've got a large area of woodland (vùng rừng) on the farm, and we run this course there.
06:34 It's mainly about collecting food and water, lighting a fire without any equipment, that kind of thing.
06:42Man This weekend could be hard work. Um, what about the area around the centre? What is there to do?
06:49Receptionist If you look at a map, you'll see that we're very well situated (tọa lạc) here.
06:52 Our centre is about midway between the Exmoor National Park, which is very popular for hill walking, and the south coast, which has very good beaches.
07:03Man Are they both within walking distance?
07:05Receptionist Well, they're both a bit far, unless you're very fit. But they're only about 30 minutes by road.
07:11 And there's also a cycle path which starts quite near here, about 10 minutes walk away. You can hire bikes at the starting point.
07:20Man Um, what is there to do if the weather's bad? I hope it won't be, but you never know.
07:25Receptionist Yes, that's right. Well, on most Saturday evenings, we show films here.
07:30 And then once a month, a group of local musicians performs in our meeting room.
07:35 And then Sherborne is only 14 miles away. It's only a small town, but it's got a very good museum and an old abbey (tu viện), which is well worth a visit.
07:45Man Well, it sounds perfect for our purposes. One last thing, what about prices?
07:50 I'm not sure yet, but there'll probably be about 15 of us.
07:56Receptionist We charge a standard £14 ahead for accommodation, whether there are 10 or 20 of you, or whatever.
08:03 And about £7 for cooked meals, depending on the menu you want.
08:08 Use of the kitchen facilities is extra, as is the hire of the meeting room.
08:13 It depends really what exactly you want and for how many people.
08:18Man Right. Well, I've made a note of all that and I'll discuss it with the rest of the group.
08:23 Then I'll get back to you with a firm booking. Can I do that by phone?
08:27Receptionist Yes, you can. But once you've made a booking, we would need a deposit (tiền đặt cọc) within five days to secure it.
08:33 Then you just pay the balance when you're here.
08:35Man Oh, yes, of course. Uh, could you give me the address, please?
08:41Receptionist Yes. It's Winsham Farm, Cotehill Road, that's C O T E H E L L E, near Sherborne.
08:53 And the postcode is SH12 1LQ.

13:41 Roger: So, why don't you apply? If you're interested in getting further information about the findings of the survey (khảo sát)...
33 dòng · 3 người nói · 15 từ vựng
09:00Narrator Section 2. You will hear a program on a student radio station. It describes the findings of a survey (khảo sát) on vacation (kỳ nghỉ) jobs taken by students the previous year.
09:13 First, you have some time to look at questions 11 to 16 on page four.
09:38 Now listen carefully and answer questions 11 to 16.
09:46Sarah Welcome to Student Life. It's spring and many of you may be thinking about arranging work for the long vacation (kỳ nghỉ).
09:51 So, on today's program, Roger Anwell reports on a survey (khảo sát) we conducted into the pleasures and problems of vacation (kỳ nghỉ) jobs. Roger.
10:03Roger Thank you, Sarah. Well, the first thing to say is that by far the majority of students we surveyed (đã khảo sát) did just three types of jobs.
10:10 All of these, obviously, had their advantages and disadvantages.
10:16 Starting with stocktaking (kiểm kê hàng hóa) in supermarkets. The thing that students said they enjoyed most about this job was the travelling.
10:21 They were often required to go to branches to do their stock takes, and this was regarded as an interesting plus.
10:27 The main negative, however, was that they tended to find the job tiring with long hours spent on their feet and climbing high shelves.
10:35 Now, one thing we did ask the students in our survey (khảo sát) was whether they had any recommendations for other people taking on their job.
10:41 And they said, perhaps not surprisingly, 'Get good shoes'. That's the only way you can keep going.
10:51 Another job which lots of students did was office work. And the positive feature of this actually rather surprised me until I remember what a hot summer it was last year.
10:59 Lots of students named air-conditioning as the best thing about office work.
11:03 The downside (nhược điểm), which many talked about, was wearing formal clothes (trang phục trang trọng).
11:07 Obviously, this didn't go down too well with students. The advice most people gave was to select a large office.
11:13 That way you have more variety (sự đa dạng) of social contacts. Otherwise, the work can get very boring.
11:26 The third job which had attracted large numbers of students was as a theme park attendant (nhân viên phục vụ).
11:31 And again, I got a surprise here because the big plus people talked about was good pay.
11:36 It must have improved since my day, I must say. Anyway, the downside (nhược điểm) I did recognise, having to deal with difficult customers, especially in the heat when tempers get frayed (căng thẳng). Not easy.
11:51 And people said that it was a good idea to live nearby because there's a lot of shift work and you don't have to worry about transport at difficult times of the day.
12:01Narrator Before you hear the rest of the program, you have some time to look at questions 17 to 20 on page five.
12:29 Now listen and answer questions 17 to 20.
12:36Roger So, those were the findings from the survey (khảo sát) on the most common student jobs.
12:40 But not all student jobs have to be mundane (nhàm chán) and boring.
12:44 One of the students who responded in our survey (khảo sát) spoke at length about his amazing job as a zoo attendant (nhân viên phục vụ).
12:51 Peter Marshall had read about work opportunities on the zoo website and just went along with a friend to talk to someone in personnel (phòng nhân sự).
12:59 He was offered a job there and then, as easy as that. In previous years, he'd done singularly unexciting (không thú vị) shop work, so he was very pleased to be doing such original work.
13:08 He ended up working for just under three months, which was actually slightly more than he had anticipated (dự đoán), and meant that he had to miss part of university term time.
13:17 But he said it was well worth it because he thinks he's found his future career path as a result of this experience.
13:23 He loved working on the educational (mang tính giáo dục) side. In particular, helping young kids understand about the animals in their natural environment.
13:30 He said it was the most intriguing (thú vị) thing he'd ever done.
13:34 He tells us though, that with final exams coming up, he won't be able to do any paid work this coming vacation (kỳ nghỉ).

12:36Narrator Section 3. You will hear three geology (địa chất học) students, Andy, Bob, and Helen, talking about forming a study syndicate (tổ chức học tập) for their forthcoming examinations (kỳ thi).
12:47 First, you have some time to look at questions 21 to 25 on page six.
13:14 Now listen carefully and answer questions 21 to 25.
13:22Andy Right then, are we ready? Bob? Helen?
13:24Helen Uh, yeah.
13:25Andy And is someone taking notes for John? He's at a tutorial (buổi hướng dẫn), isn't he?
13:29Bob Yeah, I'll let him know what we agree.
13:31Andy Good. Okay, well, first thing is, has anyone apart from me actually been in a study syndicate (tổ chức học tập) before?
13:38Bob No.
13:39Helen What does it actually involve, Andy?
13:41Andy Well, the idea is that it's a way for us, for students, to study together without a teacher.
13:47Bob Oh yeah, right.
13:49Andy When I did it last time, I found it helpful because, well, as I said, there's no teacher, so it means we're teaching one another.
13:56 And I found I really learned a lot through having to teach it myself.
14:00 It seemed a very good way to learn.
14:02Helen And presumably (có lẽ là), it gives us the chance to share ideas as well.
14:05Bob And you get fuller notes if you're all doing the reading.
14:10Andy That's right. And as well as that, because of that, really, you can do, you know, much deeper research (nghiên cứu sâu hơn).
14:16 So, I thought we could try it to revise what we've done on the geology (địa chất học) course 'cause I know this is the one that most of us are worried about, the geology (địa chất học) exam.
14:25Helen Oh, right. Yes.
14:28Bob So, the idea is we all look at a different topic, um, a different topic from the geology (địa chất học) course, and then give a presentation and talk about it.
14:38Andy That's right. I've drawn up the framework (khung) of a table which might be useful. Here, I've made a copy.
14:43Helen Oh, thanks.
14:43Bob Thanks.
14:45Andy For the first topic, I thought we could maybe do mountain building (sự hình thành núi). Is that all right?
14:48Bob Yeah, sure.
14:49 Actually, would you mind if I did that? I'm quite interested in it.
14:53Andy Right.
14:53Helen Right.
14:55Andy So is May 9th okay for that?
14:58Bob Um, yeah.
14:58Andy I'll just write that down. And it's Bob for mountain building (sự hình thành núi).
15:02 And the following week, it can't be May 16th because of our tutorial (buổi hướng dẫn), but what about the 17th?
15:07Bob Okay.
15:09 Uh, and what about the next topic? What would be the next priority (sự ưu tiên)?
15:14Helen Well, there's glaciated (đóng băng) areas, but I don't want to do that.
15:20Andy Fair enough. Actually, I don't mind having a bash. I did an assignment (bài tập lớn) on them, glaciated (đóng băng) areas and Andy.
15:26 Then we need someone to do rock formation (sự hình thành đá). Helen?
15:29Helen Yeah, okay.
15:30 And John said he'd like to too, so you can put us both down for that.
15:34Andy When?
15:35Helen May 23rd would be best.
15:37Andy Rock formation (sự hình thành đá), Helen and John. Right.
15:40 That really only leaves one week before the exams. Shall we make it on the 30th?
15:44Bob Uh, I can't make it, I'm afraid.
15:46Andy 29th of May? The exam's on June 3rd.
15:50Bob Have to be.
15:51Helen Okay.
15:52Bob Any ideas for a topic?
15:54 John said he wouldn't mind doing something on volcanoes (núi lửa).
15:57Andy Great. That's everyone then.
16:03Narrator Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 26 to 30 on page seven.
16:31 Now listen and answer questions 26 to 30.
16:38Helen And how long should these presentations be?
16:41Andy Well, it's obviously up to us. In my experience, 30 minutes is about enough.
16:45Bob Maybe a bit short. I'd have thought 40 minutes would be more like it.
16:51Andy Well, should we say 30 to 40 minutes?
16:53Helen Okay.
16:53Bob And presumably (có lẽ là), time for questions?
16:56Helen And discussion.
16:58Andy Yes. Together they usually take about 20 minutes.
17:01Helen Where should we get the information from? Is it mainly lecture notes (ghi chú bài giảng)?
17:05Andy Well, actually, I suggest we avoid those because we already have all that information.
17:09 I think it's better to go more deeply.
17:11Bob We could use the bibliography (danh mục tài liệu).
17:13Andy And anything else we find in the library, any other books.
17:16Bob And articles, you know, from the journals (tạp chí chuyên ngành).
17:19Andy And then of course, there's lots of stuff on the internet.
17:22Bob Yes, that's the sort of thing.
17:23 And what about the presentations? Will we just be talking? Presumably (có lẽ là), we can't use slides.
17:30Andy It'd be a bit difficult, but we can use the OHP (máy chiếu qua đầu).
17:33Helen And the whiteboard, of course.
17:34Bob And we can make photocopies of our notes so that everyone can have a copy.
17:39Andy Yes, great. So is there anything else?

21:13Narrator Section four.
21:14 You will hear a presentation (bài thuyết trình) about special types of language to students on a linguistics (ngôn ngữ học) course.
21:22 First, you have some time to look at questions 31 to 40 on page seven.
22:17 Now listen carefully and answer questions 31 to 40.
22:24Presenter Hello.
22:25 My presentation (bài thuyết trình) today is about three special types of language.
22:31 First, we need to distinguish (phân biệt) among a lingua franca (ngôn ngữ chung), a pigeon (bồi ngữ), and a creole (ngôn ngữ creole), and discuss their differences.
22:38 Let's start with lingua francas (ngôn ngữ chung).
22:41 The origin (nguồn gốc) of a lingua franca (ngôn ngữ chung) is always a previously (trước đây) existing language which many different people are already familiar (quen thuộc) with.
22:50 And the purpose of a lingua franca (ngôn ngữ chung) is usually international commerce (thương mại).
22:55 But whereas the vocabulary of a lingua franca (ngôn ngữ chung) is typically specialized (chuyên biệt) toward particular enterprises (doanh nghiệp), like fishing or mining,
23:06 the system of grammar in a lingua franca (ngôn ngữ chung) is completely standard (chuẩn).
23:12 In the ancient world, for example,
23:14 the lingua franca (ngôn ngữ chung) of international business among countries within trading distance of the Mediterranean Sea
23:21 was Greek and then Latin.
23:24 Today, there is no doubt what the lingua franca (ngôn ngữ chung) of international business, study, and entertainment is.
23:32 When Japan hosts an international conference,
23:35 the meetings are conducted in English.
23:38 But what about pigeons (bồi ngữ)?
23:40 Pigeons (bồi ngữ) arise when speakers do not share any common language.
23:44 When adults must communicate in the absence of a uniquely dominant (thống trị) language,
23:50 they have to resort to (phải dùng đến) speaking a pigeon (bồi ngữ).
23:53 Unlike the origin (nguồn gốc) of a lingua franca (ngôn ngữ chung) then,
23:55 pigeons (bồi ngữ) really are newly invented.
23:58 Moreover, pigeons (bồi ngữ) are used for daily conversation.
24:03 Pigeons (bồi ngữ) develop when we need to converse with each other but can't.
24:07 So, individuals just try to communicate the best they can,
24:12 often using as much pointing and gesturing as words.
24:16 In fact, the vocabulary is simple,
24:19 characterized by a lot of roundabout circumlocution (cách nói vòng vo).
24:23 That is, ways of saying something without using the specific word.
24:28 The grammar, however, is curious.
24:31 A sentence can be oddly structured (có cấu trúc), such as
24:35 'It much to cost',
24:37 for 'It is too expensive'.
24:40 Indeed, pigeons (bồi ngữ) are not real languages at all.
24:44 Pigeons (bồi ngữ) are rudimentary (thô sơ) communicative (giao tiếp) systems.
24:48 One important historical example of a pigeon (bồi ngữ)
24:51 which developed from the 17th to the 18th centuries
24:55 is Chinese pigeon (bồi ngữ).
24:57 In fact, the word pigeon (bồi ngữ) itself
24:59 is the mispronounced (phát âm sai) Asian articulation (cách phát âm) of the word 'business'.
25:05 A more recent pigeon (bồi ngữ)
25:07 is Russenorsk,
25:09 a mixture of Russian and Norwegian spoken by whalers
25:14 for Arctic fishing and commerce (thương mại).
25:21 Okay.
25:22 But what about creole (ngôn ngữ creole) languages?
25:25 First, the speakers of a creole (ngôn ngữ creole) language
25:28 were, according to many linguists, initially only children.
25:33 This is radically (hoàn toàn) unlike both lingua francas (ngôn ngữ chung) and pigeons (bồi ngữ).
25:37 But, like a pigeon (bồi ngữ),
25:39 a creole (ngôn ngữ creole) language is not a pre-established (được thiết lập trước) language.
25:43 Nevertheless, a creole (ngôn ngữ creole) language is an all-encompassing (bao hàm) language.
25:49 Indeed, the precision (sự chính xác) of both the semantics (ngữ nghĩa học) and grammar of a creole (ngôn ngữ creole) language
25:55 is virtually (hầu như) indistinguishable (không thể phân biệt được) from non-creole (ngôn ngữ creole) languages.
25:59 The vocabulary of a creole (ngôn ngữ creole) is without limitation (sự giới hạn).
26:04 But how exactly does a pigeon (bồi ngữ) develop into a creole (ngôn ngữ creole)?
26:09 It is as if humans so expect language to have a robust (mạnh mẽ, phong phú) vocabulary
26:14 and a complex (phức tạp) grammar
26:16 that when they don't find it,
26:18 toddlers begin to instinctively (theo bản năng) construct it themselves.
26:23 They begin to automatically build a new language.
26:28 Indeed, the grammar is obviously advanced.
26:31 When this happens, the pigeon (bồi ngữ) is said to have been creolized (creole hóa).
26:36 Creole (ngôn ngữ creole) languages historically arose from pigeons (bồi ngữ)
26:40 throughout the 18th and 19th centuries in Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean.
26:46 One example, Chavacano,
26:48 a creole (ngôn ngữ creole) language spoken in the Philippines,
26:51 is a Spanish-based creole (ngôn ngữ creole).
26:54 However, modern creole (ngôn ngữ creole) languages are exceedingly rare.
26:58 Though a creole (ngôn ngữ creole) language spontaneously (một cách tự phát) evolved in Nicaragua in the 1980s.
27:04 It was, however, a creole (ngôn ngữ creole) sign language (ngôn ngữ ký hiệu),
27:08 a language which...
27:12Narrator That is the end of section four.
27:15 You now have half a minute to check your answers.
