00:01Narrator IELTS listening.
00:03 Version 56337.
00:06 You will hear a number of different recordings,
00:08 and you will have to answer questions on what you hear.
00:12 There will be time for you to read the instructions and questions,
00:16 and you will have a chance to check your work.
00:20 All the recordings will be played once only.
00:25 The test is in four parts.
00:28 Write all your answers
00:29 in the listening question booklet.
00:33 At the end of the test,
00:34 you will be given 10 minutes to transfer your answers to an answer sheet.
00:40 Now turn to part one on page two of your question booklet.
00:49 Part one.
00:51 You will hear a woman talking to a man about hiring a room for a party.
00:58 First, you have some time to look at questions one to seven.
01:37 Now listen carefully and answer questions one to seven.
01:44Man Good morning, the function company. Can I help you?
01:47Woman Hi, a friend told me that you can arrange (sắp xếp) rooms for hire (cho thuê) for parties and things like that.
01:53Man That's right. We have about 10 hotels on our list,
01:56 and we hire (cho thuê) out function rooms (phòng chức năng) on their behalf.
01:59 Are you having a party?
02:01Woman Yes, it's for my birthday.
02:03 My 21st.
02:05Man Okay.
02:06 First of all, can you tell me how many people you're inviting?
02:09Woman I'm not sure yet.
02:11 It depends on the cost.
02:13Man Okay.
02:14 Well, the Exchange Hotel might be a good choice for you.
02:18 They have a room which will seat up to 45,
02:21 and will take 65 people standing.
02:24 Are you going to have a meal or just a buffet (tiệc tự chọn)?
02:27Woman Uh, I think a buffet (tiệc tự chọn).
02:29 It doesn't have to be a sit-down meal.
02:32 I don't know the Exchange Hotel.
02:34 Can you tell me a bit more about it?
02:37Man Well, it was built about 150 years ago.
02:40 We regularly arrange (sắp xếp) parties there.
02:42 They have a room for hire (cho thuê) on the fifth floor.
02:46 It's not the most central hotel,
02:47 but it's very easy for people to find.
02:50 It's very popular for wedding parties,
02:52 so I'll have to check if it's available (có sẵn).
02:54Woman Okay. Is the room nice?
02:57 Have you seen it?
02:58Man I have.
02:59 It's quite big and very light.
03:02 But the best thing is that it has a wonderful view.
03:04 On a fine evening, you can see for miles.
03:07Woman Oh, sounds good.
03:09 How much is it?
03:10Man It's 32 pounds a head.
03:12 That includes the hire (cho thuê) of the room and the standard buffet (tiệc tự chọn), but not drinks.
03:18 And you have to have at least 35 guests.
03:20Woman Well, that won't be a problem.
03:23 We're likely to be more than that.
03:24 Can you tell me when it's available (có sẵn)?
03:27Man I can check that for you.
03:29 Which date are you looking at?
03:31Woman Uh, ideally the middle to end of April.
03:35 Weekends.
03:36Man Let me see.
03:37 Um, they can do any Saturday in April,
03:42 but not Fridays or Sundays.
03:45Woman Okay.
03:46 But if I want something bigger,
03:48 what would you recommend?
03:49Man There's the Limerick Hotel.
03:52Woman How do you spell that?
03:54 Oh, I'm taking notes.
03:56Man It's L-I-M-E-R-I-C-K.
04:02 There's a large room there which seats up to 75 people,
04:07 or there's room for 125 standing.
04:10Woman Oh, I expect we'll be standing.
04:13 Where is it?
04:14Man It's in the business district,
04:15 so public transport's good.
04:18 It's got a large car park too, though.
04:20 The room's on the ground floor and it's recently been refurbished (tân trang lại).
04:24Woman Is there a garden we could use if we're on the ground floor?
04:27Man There's a small one that would be available (có sẵn).
04:30Woman Oh, sounds nice.
04:31 Especially if it's a warm evening.
04:34 And the cost?
04:35Man The buffet (tiệc tự chọn) is 36 pounds per person.
04:39 Shall I check availability (tình trạng sẵn có) in April for you?
04:41Woman Yes, please.
04:42Man Okay.
04:44 You said weekends, didn't you?
04:46Woman Yes.
04:47Man No Fridays again,
04:49 and it's not free on the first Saturday.
04:52 That's the 6th,
04:54 but it's free on the 13th and 20th.
04:57Woman Thank you.
05:01Narrator Before you hear the rest of the conversation,
05:04 you have some time to look at questions 8 to 10.
05:23 Now listen and answer questions 8 to 10.
05:30Woman I think the first hotel looks best for me,
05:32 but I need two or three days to think about it.
05:35Man Okay.
05:36 Well, if I take your booking today,
05:37 I can hold it for a week.
05:39 So if you want to change your mind or have a look at other possible hotels,
05:43 we can do that.
05:44 To confirm (xác nhận) the booking,
05:45 I then need a deposit (tiền đặt cọc) of 35%.
05:49 You pay the other 65%,
05:51 10 days before the party.
05:52Woman Okay.
05:53 And when do I have to confirm (xác nhận) numbers?
05:55Man The number of guests needs to be confirmed (xác nhận) five days before the party.
06:01 And you also have to decide which menu you want then.
06:04Woman That sounds okay.
06:05 I'll ring you on Monday.
06:07 Is this your direct line?
06:09 Um, 368207.
06:13Man I'll be out of the office on Monday,
06:15 but you can call me on my mobile phone on 044298611.
06:24Woman All right.
06:25 I've got all that.
06:27 I'll ring you back later.
06:28 Thanks.
06:29Man Bye then.
06:33Narrator That is the end of part one.
06:36 You now have one minute to check your answers to part one.

07:36Narrator Now listen carefully and answer questions 11 to 14.
07:42Speaker 1 Welcome to our holiday special.
07:44 Today, I'll be talking about a new cycle route (tuyến đường xe đạp) in this area called the Elmsden Way.
07:51 It's well signposted (có biển chỉ dẫn),
07:52 so you can see exactly where to go.
07:55 And it's an easy route with no steep hills.
07:59 It's 35 kilometers long,
08:01 from Elmsden to Lowington,
08:03 and consists (bao gồm) partly of cycle paths and partly roads.
08:08 Let me outline the route briefly,
08:10 starting at Elmsden Railway Station.
08:13 The first part is a cycle path running eastwards,
08:16 roughly parallel (song song) to the rail track.
08:19 Almost immediately,
08:21 the railway curves away and goes around the southern side of a little lake.
08:26 But the cycle path takes the northern route around the lake.
08:30 Keep your eyes open for the swans that nest there.
08:34 The path then joins the road,
08:35 and the next landmark is a group of massive rocks which tower over the countryside.
08:42 You will see them to the east of the road,
08:44 just before the road goes under the railway.
08:47 They're very impressive.
08:50 Soon, you'll come to a fork in the road where you're going to leave the road and head off towards the river.
08:57 But if you want to make a detour (đường vòng) to Collin Nature Reserve (khu bảo tồn thiên nhiên),
09:01 go straight on instead of leaving the road here.
09:05 Continuing along the cycle path,
09:07 you'll reach the river Cleve.
09:10 The cycle path follows the river southwards.
09:13 After a bit,
09:14 you'll see the Ashington China Factory,
09:16 which closed in 1962.
09:20 When you get there,
09:21 there's a bridge over the river and you carry on with Langton Forest to the south,
09:26 and farmland to the north.
09:29 The route ends at Langton village where you'll find a railway station.
09:34 So,
09:34 you can either catch the train here or cycle back to Elmsden.
09:40Narrator Before you hear the rest of the program,
09:42 you have some time to look at questions 15 to 20.
09:47 to 20.
09:48 Now listen and answer questions 15 to 20.
09:54Speaker 1 One point to remember when you're cycling on the Elmsden way is that you should keep your eyes open for sheep which occasionally stray (đi lạc) onto the cycle path from adjoining (liền kề) fields.
10:06 So, be careful to avoid accidents.
10:09 The path is well constructed,
10:11 so it's not affected by wet or muddy conditions.
10:15 There might be the odd car or tractor when you're cycling on roads,
10:19 but most traffic has been diverted (chuyển hướng) to the main road that bypasses the whole area.
10:25 Now, a bit more about some of the places you'll see.
10:29 The starting point, Elmsden Station,
10:31 was quite busy in the early 20th century with services to several major cities.
10:38 But it was closed in the 1950s.
10:41 And actually,
10:42 a small company was set up to turn it into a sort of railway museum,
10:47 maintaining it in the style of the 1950s.
10:51 And the station was ready for trains to start using it again earlier this year.
10:57 It's only used by a few local trains, though.
11:01 There's a visitor center at the station which has a small exhibition about the history of railway transport all over the world.
11:10 And a facility for hiring bikes if you don't have one of your own.
11:14 There's also a small shop just across the road from the station that sells refreshments.
11:20 As I said,
11:21 you can cycle to Langton and return to Elmsden by train,
11:25 or the other way around,
11:27 because you can take your cycle on the train.
11:30 There's no need to book.
11:32 There's plenty of room and no extra charge.
11:36 However,
11:37 the service is very limited,
11:39 and the trains between these two places don't run on weekdays.
11:44 If you want to see the River Elm,
11:46 there's a footpath from Elmsden Station.
11:49 And you can safely leave your bike in the car park there.
11:53 Leave yourself plenty of time, though.
11:56 Going down's easy,
11:57 but the climb up is very steep.
12:00 So, the walk back up to the top can take quite a while.
12:05 But it's worth the effort.
12:07 The scenery is wonderful.
12:09 And the footpath runs right next to the river,
12:12 down to a waterfall.
12:15 Finally,
12:15 if you'd like to do some more cycling in the area,
12:18 there are lots of other cycle paths.
12:21 We'll be talking on the radio about them,
12:24 and you'll be able to get full details in the Saturday edition of the local paper.
12:30 The National Cycle Network also has some details on their website,
12:35 although I have to say they don't have many local ones yet.
12:39 But that may change.
12:41 So we'll be telling you more about...
12:44Narrator That is the end of section two.
12:47 You now have half a minute to check your answers.

12:50Narrator Section three.
12:51 You will hear two students called Tom and Bella attending the third meeting of the after school club.
12:59 They are talking with their professor about the furniture company.
13:04 First, you have some time to look at questions 21 to 26.
13:39 Now listen carefully and answer questions 21 to 26.
13:47Professor Before we start, Tom and Bella,
13:49 thanks for coming in today to talk about the key case studies (nghiên cứu điển hình) that will help you to understand your class work better.
13:56 Now, I hope you've read the notes I gave you last week on the furniture company Willows.
14:01 As this will be the focus of our discussion today.
14:04 Let's begin.
14:05 Who can tell me what the current focus of the company's business is?
14:10Tom The company used to be very large,
14:11 with many retail outlets (cửa hàng bán lẻ) across the country.
14:15 However,
14:16 since the recession (suy thoái kinh tế),
14:17 there have been fewer people spending money on furniture,
14:20 and so the company was forced to close all of its outlets (cửa hàng) and now only operates online.
14:26Professor Well done, Tom.
14:28 Bella, can you add anything?
14:30Bella Willows used to produce a very large number of products,
14:34 such as tables, chairs, and light fittings.
14:37 However,
14:38 through market research,
14:39 they realized that most of their profit was made from the sale of bookcases.
14:44 So they now specialize (chuyên về) in this one product.
14:48Professor Very good.
14:49 Does anyone know how our department began its contact with Willows?
14:53Tom Did you contact the company, professor?
14:56Professor No, Tom, it wasn't through me.
14:58Bella Our headmaster saw an article that the manager had written in the newspaper and became very interested in the company.
15:06 He contacted Willows and arranged for a student to work there full-time during the summer.
15:13Professor Yes, exactly.
15:15 Does anyone know what the student thought of their time working at Willows?
15:19Tom Yes, he is a friend of ours.
15:21 He worked as a member of the design team,
15:23 creating technical drawings of the furniture using a computer.
15:27 There was a special software that he used,
15:29 which he said had a bad interface (giao diện) and was very difficult to predict.
15:34 However,
15:35 it was very efficient and helpful for quickly drawing up furniture designs.
15:40Professor How interesting.
15:42Bella Yes, it was.
15:44 We both visited him whilst he was working there and he showed us around.
15:49 Unfortunately,
15:50 visitors were not allowed to access the IT department,
15:54 but it was great to chat with his colleagues.
15:57Professor Did you meet his manager?
15:59Tom His manager is a very busy man,
16:01 so he didn't have time to meet with us.
16:04 However,
16:04 we were allowed to inspect (kiểm tra) the accounts,
16:06 which really helped us to understand the effects of the software on the company.
16:11Professor Well, what an exciting experience.
16:14 Now, before I forget,
16:15 next week, I'll be conducting face-to-face interviews with each of you to prepare for job interviews.
16:22Bella Can we do it as a group?
16:23Professor I'm afraid not, Bella.
16:25 I want to give each of you my undivided attention,
16:28 and there will be too much disturbance if I interview you all together.
16:32 Plus, it will be more realistic if I interview you alone.
16:37Tom Have you finished writing the feedback (phản hồi) on our exam results, professor?
16:41Professor Yes, I have, Tom.
16:42 And I must say that I was not disappointed.
16:45 I'm glad to say that your performance has dramatically (một cách đáng kể) increased since you began attending this after-school club,
16:51 and you have both scored above the average.
16:54 If you continue to work hard,
16:56 your results should soon improve significantly.
17:02Narrator Before you hear the rest of the conversation,
17:04 you have some time to look at questions 27 to 30.
17:29 Now, listen and answer questions 27 to 30.
17:36Professor Now, back to our discussion about Willows.
17:39 Can anyone tell me what business decisions might benefit the company?
17:44Bella A new system would definitely benefit Willows.
17:47 Their system is very outdated (lỗi thời).
17:49 I don't think it would help them to gain more profit.
17:53 However,
17:54 the system is capable of doing the work of hundreds of people.
17:58 This would,
17:59 therefore,
18:00 significantly lower labor costs.
18:02Tom I agree.
18:03 Unfortunately,
18:04 unless they also replace the machinery in their workshop,
18:08 the new system won't reduce the production time.
18:11Bella That is a shame.
18:12 If they can't reduce their production time,
18:14 they won't be able to increase sales.
18:17 The answer is to hire more staff in order to increase the efficiency (hiệu quả) of the production line.
18:24Professor Yes, you have both made interesting points.
18:26 Now, for one final question before we finish this week's session.
18:31 How will new clients be affected by the new system?
18:35Tom Unfortunately, the new system does not allow clients to connect to the Willows system from home,
18:41 so they are unable to access their work online.
18:44 This also means that the system presents no opportunity to attract more contacts,
18:48 since clients are unable to view it from their homes.
18:52Bella Yes, that's true.
18:53 However,
18:54 it could definitely benefit clients who visit the showroom.
18:58 The system is very interactive and allows clients to easily browse the furniture catalog,
19:04 which will save them a lot of time.
19:07Tom It's a shame that staff are still needed to guide clients through the online system,
19:12 as it means that no savings could be made in labor costs.
19:16 I think the major benefit of the new system is that it enables staff to design the furniture in front of the client,
19:22 which allows them to get a lot more involved in the design.
19:25Professor Bravo!
19:27 You've both contributed fantastic points to our conversation.
19:31 That concludes our session for today.
19:33 I'll see you next week.
19:37Narrator That is the end of section three.

Section 4

20:13Narrator Now turn to section four.
20:16 You will hear a lecture (bài giảng) about a special type of sneezing.
20:21 First, you have some time to look at questions 31 to 40.
21:16 Now listen carefully and answer questions 31 to 40.
21:24Lecturer Welcome to this lecture (bài giảng) in the health sciences intended (dự định) to inspire (truyền cảm hứng) you and get you thinking about your research project.
21:32 Today,
21:33 I want to show you how even ordinary (bình thường) human behavior like sneezing (hắt hơi),
21:38 which normally happens when you get a cold,
21:41 may be worth studying.
21:44 Have you ever been walking outside when a bright shaft of sunlight hits you between the eyes?
21:50 The reaction of some people is immediate.
21:54 An unpleasant prickling (cảm giác châm chích) in the nose,
21:56 an increase in their breathing rate,
21:59 and an uncontrollable watering of the eyes.
22:02 Then,
22:03 almost as quickly,
22:05 they sneeze and gain relief.
22:07 This may happen every time they go into the sun.
22:11 This so-called photic or light sneeze is a reflex,
22:15 which means it can't be controlled.
22:17 And it's very common.
22:19 Anything between one in 10 and one in three people might be affected.
22:24 In fact,
22:25 a sneeze is triggered by an irritation of some sort in the linings of the nostrils.
22:31 The result is a cascade of reactions,
22:34 beginning with the stimulation of the nerve endings all over the face and generating an explosive expulsion (sự tống ra) of air at up to 95 miles an hour,
22:46 like an extremely localized (địa phương hóa) personal hurricane.
22:50 The body's coordination (sự phối hợp) of such reactions is complicated and belongs to the subconscious (tiềm thức) control hardware that regulates other things,
22:59 for example, tears in the eyes.
23:06 People have been interested in the phenomenon (hiện tượng) of photic sneezing for thousands of years.
23:12 The Greek philosopher (nhà triết học) Aristotle asked,
23:14 "Why does the sun prompt (thúc đẩy) us to sneeze,
23:17 whereas the heat of a fire does not?"
23:20 A partial answer came 2,000 years later,
23:24 when the English philosopher (nhà triết học) Francis Bacon showed that his photic sneeze had nothing to do with heat.
23:31 If he closed his eyes when going into the sun,
23:33 he didn't sneeze even though the heat was still there.
23:37 Henry Everett,
23:37 a consultant psychiatrist (bác sĩ tâm thần tư vấn) at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore,
23:42 was the first to make a systematic (có hệ thống) attempt to understand the condition.
23:46 Noting in 1964 that 30% of the staff employed in the medical department were photic sneezers,
23:53 Everett did some further investigation.
23:56 He found that while 80% of sneezers reported other sneezers among their relatives (họ hàng),
24:02 only 20% of non-sneezers did.
24:05 Now, there are factors that are certain indicators of a photic sneeze.
24:09 First of all,
24:10 those with the condition almost always sneeze a set number of times on exposure to light.
24:16 In addition to this,
24:17 the sneeze depends on a contrast (sự tương phản) in visible brightness,
24:21 such as when the sun moves out from behind a cloud.
24:25 And the sneezing fit won't be repeated immediately.
24:28 The body needs time before it can be recharged (nạp lại).
24:31 So if you go back into a darkened space and then immediately re-enter bright light,
24:37 you will not sneeze again.
24:40 Now on to possible applications of research in this area.
24:44 The photic sneeze had long been overlooked (bỏ qua),
24:46 because its effects are generally less than serious,
24:49 although the government did once study it as a risk factor (yếu tố nguy cơ) for pilots.
24:54 Yet, work on such a simple disorder might lead to important discoveries on more acute conditions (tình trạng cấp tính),
25:00 such as migraine (chứng đau nửa đầu) or epilepsy (bệnh động kinh),
25:02 which are also caused by cross-wires in the nervous system.
25:06 That is why I encourage you to select something similar for your first investigative (có tính điều tra) medical project.
25:12 It could be the beginning of something even more useful.
25:16 Now let's talk about the project timetable.
25:22Narrator That is the end of part four.
25:25 You now have one minute to check your answers to part four.
26:29 That is the end of the listening test.
26:32 You now have 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the listening answer sheet.
34:41 Please stop writing and wait for your question booklet to be collected.
