00:00Narrator one.
00:01 You will hear a telephone conversation between a customer and a representative (người đại diện) of an agency (công ty)
00:06 that arranges cleaning services for people's houses.
00:10 First you have some time to look at questions 1 to 4.
00:42 Good morning, Homecare Cleaning Agency (công ty).
00:44Customer Oh, hello.
00:45 I'd like to arrange to have some cleaning done, please.
00:49Representative Certainly.
00:50 Have you used our services before?
00:52Customer No, I haven't.
00:54 But a friend of mine has often used your company and suggested I phone you.
00:58Representative Oh, that's great.
01:00 I'll just take some details from you,
01:02 and then you can let me know exactly what you would like done.
01:05Customer Okay.
01:06Representative First of all, what area are you in?
01:08Customer I'm in the southwest.
01:10Representative Okay.
01:11 And are you interested in having a regular cleaner or is this a one-off clean?
01:16Customer No,
01:17 I'd like to arrange to have someone come in once a week.
01:21Representative Right.
01:22 Now, let's just get a bit of information about the house.
01:26 How many bedrooms does it have?
01:28Customer Three.
01:29Representative Are they all double bedrooms (phòng ngủ đôi)?
01:31Customer Well,
01:32 one of the bedrooms is quite small,
01:35 so it's probably really two double rooms (phòng đôi).
01:38Representative Right.
01:40Customer We have the small bedroom set up as an office.
01:42Representative Okay.
01:44 And just a standard kitchen, lounge, dining room, and bathroom?
01:48Customer Well actually, we don't have a separate dining room.
01:51 It's a kitchen-diner.
01:53 Then there's the lounge
01:55 and as well as that, we have a family room.
01:58 Oh, and two bathrooms.
02:00Representative Okay.
02:05Narrator Before you hear the rest of the conversation,
02:07 you have some time to look at questions 5 to 10.
02:51 Now listen and answer questions 5 to 10.
02:58Representative Right.
02:59 That's all I need to know about the house itself.
03:01 Now, what we do is we offer a basic cleaning service
03:05 and then you let us know about anything extra you'd like cleaned.
03:09Customer Right.
03:11 And uh, what does the basic service include?
03:15Representative We clean all the floors and surfaces (bề mặt)
03:17 and do a basic clean in the kitchen and bathroom.
03:20Customer Okay, that sounds good.
03:23 And do you clean windows?
03:24Representative Well, I'm afraid we don't do that.
03:26 Health and safety regulations.
03:28 But we do offer other special services.
03:31 We can put clean sheets on the beds, for example.
03:34Customer Uh-huh.
03:35Representative Or we can clean out your fridge.
03:37 A lot of people like that done.
03:39Customer I'm not so worried about that, but I would like the sheets changed.
03:43Representative That's no problem, we can do that.
03:46Customer What about the carpet?
03:48Representative As well as the standard vacuum, we can shampoo (gội, giặt) it if you want.
03:52Customer Right.
03:53 We've got young children, so it gets pretty dirty.
03:56 I haven't had it done for six months.
03:59 It really needs doing more often than that.
04:02Representative You can have it done every month if you like,
04:04 but three months is what we usually recommend.
04:07Customer That sounds good.
04:10 The only other thing is the washing.
04:12 Do you do laundry work?
04:13Representative Yes, we do.
04:14 That's no problem.
04:16 What exactly would you like done?
04:18Customer Well, it's no problem to put a load of washing in the machine.
04:21 I can do that, but
04:23 I would like to have the ironing done.
04:25Representative That's fine.
04:26 And would you like the washing put away in drawers or wardrobes (tủ quần áo)?
04:30Customer No, it's okay.
04:31 You can just leave everything out and fold it up.
04:34Representative Okay, right.
04:35 Now I'll just set up an account for you and I'll take down some of your details (thông tin chi tiết).
04:41 First of all, what's your full name?
04:43Customer It's Rose Kelly.
04:46Representative And could I have your home address please, Mrs. Kelly?
04:50Customer Yes,
04:50 it's 48 Amy's Road.
04:53 That's
04:54 A M Y E S.
05:00 And that's in Mount Eden.
05:02Representative Okay.
05:03 Now, what day of the week would you like the property cleaned?
05:07Customer It doesn't really matter.
05:09 Not Monday, but any other day.
05:12Representative Okay, let's see.
05:14 We have a cleaner in your area later on Thursday, so
05:19 shall we go for that day?
05:20 We could have someone there by about 9:30 in the morning.
05:24Customer Does that suit you?
05:25 Yes, that's fine.
05:28 And do you charge an hourly rate or a total for the whole job?
05:33Representative No, we charge by the hour.
05:35 It will work out to about $25 per hour.
05:39Customer Oh, that's quite reasonable.
05:41 I thought it might be closer to $30.
05:44 And how long do you expect it to take?
05:47Representative Well, you said the house isn't large, so I'd guess no more than three hours at the most.
05:53 We can occasionally finish a three-bedroom in two and a half, but that's probably not too realistic.
05:59Customer Right, that sounds good.
06:02Representative Okay, that's lovely.
06:03 Thank you very much and we'll have someone there next week.
06:06Customer Thank you.
06:11Narrator That is the end of part one.
06:13 You now have 45 seconds to check your answers to part one.

07:01Narrator Section two.
07:03 You have some time to look at questions 11 to 16.
07:38 Now listen carefully and answer questions 11 to 16.
07:45Guide Okay.
07:46 Well, first of all, I'll give you a bit of background (thông tin nền) to the museum
07:49 and then tell you about some of the galleries (phòng trưng bày).
07:52 You probably won't have time to see everything today,
07:54 so what I recommend you do is go to the Egyptian (Ai Cập) room first,
07:59 because it's everyone's favorite place and it gets very crowded with the school parties later in the day.
08:05 Oh, and I should mention that the photography galleries (phòng trưng bày) undergoing refurbishment (nâng cấp) at the moment,
08:09 so while that's definitely worth seeing, it'll have to wait for another time.
08:14 Now, the actual museum building itself is quite interesting.
08:18 It was designed by a local architect (kiến trúc sư) called William Craven in the 19th century,
08:23 at a time when the city was developing rapidly.
08:26 With new factories to cope with the expansion of the textile (dệt may) industry.
08:31 The museum's built in a very similar style to the railway station, which was constructed at around the same time.
08:38 That was designed by another architect (kiến trúc sư),
08:39 but William Craven did also provide the plans for the town hall,
08:43 which was built just a few years later.
08:47 Construction of the museum began in 1888
08:50 with a large team of carpenters, stone masons, and builders.
08:56 Then in recent years, it's been extensively refurbished.
09:00 The lovely big windows have been retained to let the daylight flood in,
09:04 but the award-winning part of the project was the restoration (sự phục hồi) of the area around the central hall.
09:10 In particular, the beautiful wrought iron (sắt rèn) staircase, which was brought back to its former glory.
09:16 Unfortunately, the museum's original tiled floor had to be replaced with new tiles of a similar design.
09:23 It was a very expensive project and since we don't charge admission fees, we had to find other ways of funding it.
09:29 We did get some money from the Department of Culture at national level,
09:33 but we had even more generous support from companies and industries here in the city who were our main benefactors (nhà hảo tâm).
09:40 However, we do also depend on donations from people living in the area for the ongoing maintenance (bảo trì) of the building.
09:47 So, how will the museum mainly be spending its money in the next five years?
09:53 We already work with schools and colleges helping people get a better understanding of all the creative disciplines (ngành học).
09:59 We consider the most important part of our work, the restoration (sự phục hồi) of the valuable historical objects we are lucky enough to have in our position,
10:06 and this will continue to be where the most funding is allocated.
10:11 Of course, it would be wonderful to purchase new objects for the museum, but we simply don't have the space at the moment.
10:18 While we do hope you enjoy your day today, but if you would like to learn more about our exhibits on display here,
10:24 I suggest you come to one of the Saturday morning lectures (bài giảng) which are given every month by one of our team of experts.
10:31 Of course, you can pick up leaflets about the exhibits in most of the galleries (phòng trưng bày) too,
10:36 but you'll only get a basic introduction from those.
10:39 We're also working to update our website so that it provides more background (thông tin nền) on the exhibits, but that's still at the planning stage.
10:49Narrator Before you hear the rest of the talk, you have some time to look at questions 17 to 20 on page four.
11:17 Now listen and answer questions 17 to 20.
11:24Guide Okay, now let me just tell you a bit about what's on at the moment.
11:29 Well, we're very well known for our collection of 18th-century paintings, both oils and watercolors.
11:36 Some of these are English landscapes and portraits, but we also have paintings by other European artists who were working during this period.
11:44 If you're interested in art that's a bit nearer home,
11:47 the Farney collection is a set of drawings by Paul Farney.
11:52 He was born in Ireland, but he came to work here in the city in the early 20th century and then made it his home.
11:59 He worked in a factory but spent his spare time drawing the buildings and urban landscape of the city,
12:05 and his work has now been collected and displayed here.
12:10 On a more practical note, we have a display of kitchen appliances which might interest you.
12:15 These are the sorts of things you wouldn't normally expect to see in a museum.
12:19 There's an electric potato peeler from the 1970s, which sold really well at the time, but no one's got one now.
12:26 There are lots of other similar appliances which must have seemed like great ideas at the time, but which never took off.
12:33 You might also like to visit the fashion gallery.
12:36 This is an exhibition which is running for the next few weeks only, and shows men's and women's fashion
12:41 from 1900 to 2000,
12:44 including some of the famous designers of the time.
12:48 Okay, so if anyone's got any questions, follow me over.
12:55Narrator That is the end of section two.
12:57 You now have half a minute to check your answers.

13:32Narrator Now turn to section three.
13:36 Section three.
13:39 First, you have some time to look at questions 21 to 25.
14:08 Now listen carefully and answer questions 21 to 25.
14:16Professor Hi Frances, Sam.
14:18Frances So, how did you go with applying the different theoretical (lý thuyết) business tools for the report I asked you to write?
14:24Sam It was interesting and made us really focus on which tool was best to use when analyzing (phân tích) a business.
14:29Professor Good.
14:30 So, tell me what you found out.
14:32Frances We liked the theory behind PEST analysis (phân tích).
14:35 That's political, economic, social, and technological (công nghệ).
14:39 Although we're not sure if it was very applicable (có thể áp dụng) to our case.
14:44Sam Some of the other groups had studies for which it worked really well,
14:47 and they said it was easy to use,
14:49 but I felt it focused too much on the big picture and was unsuitable for our company.
14:54Frances I agree.
14:56 On the other hand, I enjoyed using the drill-down method.
14:58Sam It was painstaking (cần cù, tỉ mỉ) to do, and we seemed to be working on it for ages,
15:03 but the results were worth waiting for.
15:05Frances Yes, I liked the way it eventually broke down complex problems.
15:09Sam Yes, I much preferred doing the PMI analysis (phân tích).
15:12 It was so straightforward to break down into its three components (thành phần):
15:16 plus, minus, and interesting implications (hàm ý).
15:19 You just needed to brainstorm these components (thành phần) and then write them up.
15:23 Fast and effective.
15:25 And it didn't make your brain hurt doing it.
15:27Frances I agree.
15:28 And you don't need any special training.
15:30 At all.
15:30 Anyone can use it.
15:32Professor Hmm.
15:33 So, was there any tool that you thought was superior (vượt trội) to the others?
15:37Frances In my opinion, the one tool that is critical (quan trọng) to business, especially for larger companies,
15:42 is Pareto analysis (phân tích).
15:44 If they applied Pareto analysis (phân tích), they would see that by focusing on the critical (quan trọng) 20% of their problems,
15:49 they could generate 80% of the benefits.
15:52 This would allow them to work faster, and it also reduces their workload.
15:57 It's all about finding out what their basic problems are.
16:00Sam I agree with Frances about Pareto, but my favorite was the SWOT analysis (phân tích).
16:05 You know, looking at the company's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
16:10 As it can be used in so many different situations.
16:13 It works in large and small companies, and even down to departmental level.
16:18 It was great for our case study.
16:20Frances Yes, that's true.
16:25Narrator Before you hear the rest of the discussion, you have some time to look at questions 26 to 30 on page six.
17:08 Now listen and answer questions 26 to 30.
17:14Professor Okay.
17:15 I've read your draft report, but can you tell me a bit more about that company you focused on?
17:21Frances Well, the company we used in our study was a manufacturing (sản xuất) company who have relied on distributors (nhà phân phối) to take their product to the end user.
17:29 We did some analysis (phân tích) examining the possibility of them distributing their own products.
17:34Sam We initially looked at their strengths.
17:35 The company, although it is small, is well known and has a very good reputation (danh tiếng).
17:40 The management are very committed to increasing the company profits,
17:44 and they are confident this move would be successful.
17:47Frances Right.
17:48 And the company has quite a lot of staff who have previously worked for distribution companies,
17:52 so the knowledge is already there.
17:54 That was something we didn't expect to find and is probably going to help them the most to achieve their goals.
18:00Professor I was quite impressed by some of the opportunities you detailed.
18:04 I did think you missed something quite pertinent (thích hợp) to their future growth, however.
18:09Sam What was that?
18:10Professor You didn't consider the potential for establishing an offshore (nước ngoài) division.
18:14 You talked about the company negotiating (đàm phán) better terms with its suppliers.
18:19 Most of these are based abroad,
18:21 and so if the company had a way of actually distributing the product there,
18:25 this could be a tremendous (to lớn) opportunity and give them an edge over their competitors.
18:30Frances That's a good point.
18:32 So, what did you think about the threats we identified?
18:36Professor I thought you did a good job.
18:38 I was really pleased to see that you considered how the government's planned environmental policy could really affect the viability (tính khả thi) of this venture.
18:46 With this law being introduced next year, they might need to find new ways of using their existing technology.
18:53 It's easy to identify what your competitors are doing,
18:57 but it's the bigger picture that often gets ignored.
19:00 So, Sam, what did you learn from this assignment?
19:04Sam Heaps.
19:05 I guess I hadn't realized how much time it takes to ensure your company survives and profits.
19:10 It was great to study the different tools in books, but applying them in the real world was much harder than I thought.
19:16 It was a great learning experience.
19:18Professor I'm glad I could make your assignment relevant.
19:21 I'm basically happy with your report.
19:23 You've got the format correct, with the necessary headings (tiêu đề), et cetera,
19:27 and you've got sufficient details (thông tin chi tiết) under the different headings (tiêu đề).
19:31 Just remember to state whether or not you think the company should go ahead with the new venture.
19:36 But you've done a good job so far.
19:40Narrator That is the end of section three.
19:43 You now have half a minute to check your answers.

20:17Narrator Now turn to section four.
20:20 Section four.
20:23 First you have some time to look at questions 31 to 40 on page eight.
21:27 Now listen carefully and answer questions 31 to 40.
21:35Lecturer I'd like to give you a brief overview (tổng quan) of a research project I've been working on as part of a team of four.
21:40 We wanted to get some data on what happens to students after they graduate,
21:45 and also find out how useful they felt their degree course was to them.
21:49 We focused on graduates from the course in Business Management,
21:52 since this is one of the most popular and long-established courses.
21:56 We decided to use two different data gathering methods.
22:00 We started off by emailing a brief questionnaire (bảng câu hỏi) to all last year's graduates from that course,
22:06 and then we selected a number of those who had replied,
22:09 and with them we carried out phone interviews.
22:11 We'd originally intended to use face-to-face interviews,
22:14 but didn't feel that would be practical,
22:16 and in fact, we found this method provided a combination of wide coverage and depth,
22:22 which is what we wanted.
22:23 So, what did we find?
22:25 Well, I suppose our most surprising finding was just how many graduates had gone on to work towards an additional qualification (bằng cấp)
22:33 rather than getting a job immediately.
22:35 That was 32%, almost a third.
22:38 Of the rest, a very small proportion were unemployed,
22:42 just 4%, and all the rest were in employment.
22:46 More than half of them were in the public sector with a sizable minority (thiểu số) in the private sector
22:51 and a small number in the not-for-profit sector.
22:54 We were also interested in the attitudes of those who were employed towards their work.
22:58 The majority said that their expectations had been fulfilled.
23:02 They were generally satisfied in terms of their salary,
23:05 and also happy with their prospects (triển vọng) for career development,
23:08 with very few of them feeling that they were in a dead-end job with no prospects (triển vọng) of promotion.
23:18 For the second main part of our research, we wanted to get some feedback from the graduates on how useful they felt their degree course had been to them.
23:26 There were really three main skills which the graduates felt they'd gained from doing the course,
23:31 and identified as having been the most valuable (có giá trị) to them.
23:34 They highlighted the fact that they'd developed the ability to work as members of a team.
23:38 Another skill which they cited as valuable (có giá trị) was that of personal organization (tổ chức),
23:42 things like meeting deadlines (hạn chót), time management, and so on.
23:46 And finally, a lot of them said that what they'd learned about approaches to problem solving had been very useful.
23:52 We also asked them about which elements (yếu tố) of the course had been least valuable (có giá trị) to them.
23:57 To our surprise, the thing that was mentioned most often here was presentations (bài thuyết trình).
24:02 They hadn't enjoyed having to give these as part of their course,
24:05 nor had they found it useful having to listen to those given by their fellow students.
24:10 The reason given for this was that they felt they weren't trained how to do it properly.
24:15 And the second thing that got very negative feedback was work on essay writing.
24:20 Most people thought this was unnecessary
24:22 and that it would have been better to work on report writing.
24:25 And finally, some respondents said that they would have liked more guidance on the best way to go about looking for a job,
24:32 that the course could have done more to help them.
24:35 Finally, we asked if there were any skills...
