00:01Narrator IELTS listening version K0012.
00:07 You will hear a number of different recordings and you will have to answer questions on what you hear.
00:13 There will be time for you to read the instructions and questions, and you will have a chance to check your work.
00:20 All the recordings will be played once only.
00:24 The test is in four sections.
00:27 Write all your answers in the listening question booklet.
00:31 At the end of the test, you will be given 10 minutes to transfer your answers to an answer sheet.
00:39 Now turn to section one on page two of your question booklet.
00:49 Section one.
00:50 You will hear two friends called John and Anna talking about a holiday Anna has just had on Jackson Island.
00:58 First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 7 on page two.
01:33 You will see that there is an example that has been done for you.
01:37 On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.
01:44John Hi Anna.
01:45 How was your holiday to Jackson Island?
01:47Anna It was good.
01:48 There's quite a lot to see.
01:50 It's quite a big island really.
01:52John Yeah.
01:53 I was thinking of going in the summer.
01:55 So where would you recommend going on the island?
01:57Anna Well, the capital of course, Camford.
02:01 I stayed there with my cousin.
02:05Narrator Anna stayed with her cousin, so cousin has been written in the space.
02:11 Now we shall begin.
02:13 You should answer the questions as you listen because you will not hear the recording a second time.
02:19 Listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 7.
02:26John Hi Anna.
02:26 How was your holiday to Jackson Island?
02:29Anna It was good.
02:30 There's quite a lot to see.
02:32 It's quite a big island really.
02:33John Yeah.
02:34 I was thinking of going in the summer.
02:36 So where would you recommend going on the island?
02:39Anna Well, the capital of course, Camford.
02:42 I stayed there with my cousin.
02:43John What did you do there?
02:45Anna Well, actually I spent most of my time there shopping.
02:49John So has it got good shopping centers?
02:51Anna Yes, but they're the same as at home really.
02:54 So I did all my shopping in the market, which is great.
02:58John What kinds of things are good to buy there?
03:01Anna Everything, but bags and shoes especially.
03:04 Just make sure you've got cash with you as most of the stalls don't take credit cards.
03:09John Okay, that's good to know.
03:11 Where else did you go?
03:12Anna Well, my cousin and I went to Newtown.
03:15 She said it was famous for its modern architecture.
03:18 We only had half a day there, so we took a bus tour around the town,
03:23 but if I were you, I'd give the bus tour a miss.
03:26 Unless you know a lot about architecture, the buildings all look the same.
03:31 There's a museum though, that's supposed to be good.
03:33 You might like that.
03:34John Okay, I'll give it a go.
03:36Anna Then after that, we headed for Golden Beach because we were going to meet up with an old friend that I hadn't seen for years.
03:44 But we had to stay in a caravan as the hotels were all booked up.
03:48John Is it as pretty as it looks in the brochures (tờ rơi quảng cáo)?
03:50Anna Yes, it's very picturesque (đẹp như tranh vẽ).
03:53 We did some sailing on the most beautiful blue sea.
03:56 It was so clear that you could see the bottom, even quite far out to sea.
04:02 That part of the trip was great, and I'd have liked to have stayed even longer.
04:06 I'd suggest staying there for a minimum (tối thiểu) of four days if I were you.
04:10 We had two days there and it wasn't nearly enough.
04:13John Sounds great.
04:14 I'll put that on my must-do list.
04:16Anna Was that the end of your trip?
04:18John No.
04:19Anna After Golden Beach, we drove into the center of the island to White Mountain.
04:24John White as in the color?
04:25Anna Yes.
04:26 The island's great because you can go from the beaches up to the snowy mountain in a couple of hours.
04:33 We took a tent because we were going to camp, but the weather was so cold, in fact it was snowing when I was there,
04:40 that we stopped in a motel instead.
04:42John Did you go skiing then?
04:44Anna No, but we tried snowboarding and it was harder than it looked.
04:48 It looks so easy when you see other people doing it, but it took me ages to get the hang of it.
04:54 I wish I'd had some lessons, but you had to make your bookings in advance.
04:58John Okay, I'll look into that.
04:59 Thanks.
05:04Narrator Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 8 to 10 on page two.
05:25 Now listen and answer questions 8 to 10.
05:32John So are there any other tips or advice you could give me?
05:35Anna I don't know.
05:36 Let me think.
05:38 Oh, one place you should try to visit is this very quaint cafe, which is at the foot of the mountain.
05:45 It has the best cakes ever.
05:47 It's worth going there just for them.
05:49John Hmm, I'll have to try those.
05:51 So what other advice would you give?
05:53Anna Oh, let me think.
05:56 Uh, we didn't really have any problems.
05:59John Well, how did you get around when you were there?
06:02Anna We wanted to get a motorbike at first.
06:04 They're very cheap to hire and great fun to ride as the roads are very good.
06:09 But it turned out not to be a good idea because the weather is so changeable (thay đổi).
06:14 You'd be much better off in a car.
06:16 There are plenty of places where you can hire them, and the roads are well signposted (có biển chỉ dẫn rõ ràng), so you won't get lost.
06:21John And presumably I can get a map when I get there?
06:24Anna Well, you can, but they are expensive (đắt tiền).
06:27 It would be better to get one here before you go.
06:30John Great.
06:31 That's been really useful.
06:32 Thank you.
06:37Narrator That is the end of section one.
06:39 You now have half a minute to check your answers.

07:12Narrator Now turn to section two on page three.
07:17 Section two.
07:18 You will hear an art center director giving information to a group of people attending an arts weekend.
07:26 First, you have some time to look at questions 11 to 15 on page three.
08:03Bob Grain Welcome to Grampic Arts Campus (khuôn viên trường) for our annual residential (nội trú) arts weekend.
08:08 I'm Bob Grain, director of the program.
08:12 It's a large campus (khuôn viên trường).
08:13 It's quite easy to get lost, so I'm going to give you a quick overview of the most important places here.
08:21 Right, I'm glad you all found your way here to reception.
08:26 First, a word about parking.
08:28 We do have a free temporary (tạm thời) car park here.
08:32 And for those of you coming by bike, the bike sheds (nhà kho) aren't far from reception.
08:37 You'll see them on your left as you walk down South Lane towards the residential (nội trú) rooms.
08:43 Now, dinner is in the dining room at 7:30.
08:48 If you need something to eat now, the snack shop is still open.
08:52 The quickest way to get there is to leave here, go straight through the office, they won't mind.
08:58 The ornamental (trang trí) ponds in front of you and the snack shop is the building on your left.
09:05 The fitness facilities (cơ sở vật chất tập thể dục) are even better this year.
09:08 We've outgrown (phát triển vượt bậc) the old fitness rooms, which were next to the office.
09:13 To find the new fitness rooms from here, walk up to North Road, they're at the end in the last block next to the dining room.
09:23 Now, your bedrooms are quite near.
09:26 You can see the single rooms (phòng đơn) in the tall block to the far left of us across South Lane.
09:32 Couples and families are in our family rooms, right next door to them.
09:37 I'm afraid there aren't any TVs in the rooms.
09:40 We ask you to keep the noise down, please.
09:44 We have a TV room, you can probably see it from here.
09:47 It's right opposite us in the big red building.
09:53Narrator Before you hear the rest of the information, you have some time to look at questions 16 to 20 on page four.
10:18Bob Grain But there are gaps in our timetables for some extra options.
10:22 You may have this information in your brochure (tờ rơi quảng cáo), but there've been some changes.
10:27 Firstly, the drama option.
10:31 I'm afraid our theater and practice rooms here are being refurbished (được tân trang lại) and are out of use.
10:37 We decided against using our sports hall, and instead, we're going to use our lecture rooms (phòng giảng), which we've converted (chuyển đổi) into a theater for the weekend.
10:48 There are also changes to the photography option.
10:51 This year, this option isn't open to everyone.
10:55 We decided for practical reasons to reserve it for beginners with no previous experience.
11:02 Let me remind you that you don't need any special equipment.
11:06 That's provided.
11:08 The tutors have said that unfortunately, they can't accept parents with children because that proved too disruptive (gây rối) last time.
11:16 But if you're over 18, that's fine.
11:19 On to the writing option.
11:22 Previous courses looked at starting your novel.
11:26 This year, we wondered about focusing on the techniques of writing different types of poetry.
11:32 However, as a result of many requests, we've decided the workshop will concentrate on helping each participant write one or more short stories.
11:42 Poetry may be some future time.
11:45 Now, music.
11:48 The brochure (tờ rơi quảng cáo) says you'll go to a concert.
11:51 That's a misprint.
11:52 Instead, you'll be writing and putting on your own performance, a concert for yourselves.
12:00 Unfortunately, the singing tutor is ill.
12:03 It's too late to replace her, so we've had to cancel singing lessons.
12:08 Apologies for that.
12:11 Finally, the crèche.
12:13 This is available for all families on the program and there are still some places left.
12:19 I'm sure you'll be pleased to know that the charge for this hasn't increased since last year.
12:25 Lunch is included, but of course, parents are welcome to collect their children and spend the lunch break with them.
12:32 May I remind you that any fees for this service must be settled in full at the end of the last day.
12:39 So, has anybody got any questions?
12:45Narrator That is the end of section two.
12:47 You now have half a minute to check your answers.

13:21Narrator Now turn to section three on page five.
13:26 Section three.
13:27 You will hear two trainee teachers called Dean and Hannah talking about their recent teaching practice in an elementary school.
13:38 First you have some time to look at questions 21 to 24 on page five.
14:11Hannah Hi Dean.
14:12 Did you have a good weekend?
14:13Dean Yes.
14:14 It was good to relax after a whole week of teaching practice.
14:18Hannah I really enjoyed the experience though.
14:21Dean Yes, so did I.
14:23Hannah And I think it went well.
14:25 Anyway, are you okay to talk about the report we've got to write on the geography lesson we taught together?
14:33 I was thinking we could make notes now and then divide the actual writing up between us.
14:38Dean Sure.
14:38 Good idea.
14:40Hannah Let's begin with our lesson aims, shall we?
14:42Dean Right.
14:43Hannah Well, I know the main one was getting the class to think about how people in different parts of the world are connected to each other through the things they buy and sell.
14:54Dean Yes.
14:54 We took that from the syllabus (chương trình học) for grade four, and then we decided to use pencils as our example because they're relatively simple in design and everyone's used a pencil at some time or other.
15:05 We should include that information too.
15:08Hannah Right.
15:08 And we also wanted to get the class thinking about how things are moved around the world in different ways.
15:14 From the farms and the mines to the factories and then the stores.
15:19 That wasn't in the core syllabus (chương trình học).
15:21 I think we added that ourselves.
15:23Dean Yes, I think you're right.
15:25Hannah Okay.
15:26 Then the last section of the report contains a post-lesson analysis.
15:32Dean We have to mention any problems we identified in our lesson when we taught it.
15:36 So, any ideas?
15:38Hannah Well, I know we were really satisfied with our handouts and worksheets.
15:43 We both thought they'd been at just the right level for the class.
15:47 And I don't know about you, but I think we worked well as a team.
15:51Dean Absolutely.
15:53 Neither of us was too dominant (lấn át), and we supported each other.
15:56 Personally, the thing I think we didn't get right was the way we paced (điều chỉnh nhịp độ) things.
16:02 Some things seemed to be rushed and others seemed to drag out too long.
16:06 I don't know how you feel about that.
16:08Hannah The same as you.
16:10 If we did the same lesson again, I'd want to make some adjustments to that, but keep the same basic lesson plan.
16:17Dean Okay.
16:18 We see eye to eye on that.
16:20 But there's one other thing.
16:22 At the time, I seem to remember we both thought that organizing the children in sets of six didn't work very well, and that pairs would have been better for certain tasks.
16:32 So that the shyer kids got more chance to contribute.
16:35Hannah Yes, I remember that too.
16:37 And we should put it into our report as well.
16:43Narrator Before you hear the rest of the discussion, you have some time to look at questions 25 to 30 on page six.
17:21 Now listen and answer questions 25 to 30.
17:28Dean Now should we go over our lesson plan together before we write the report?
17:32 It seems ages ago now.
17:34Hannah Fine.
17:35 Well, the whole lesson was based on the production and distribution of pencils.
17:40 First, we gave out the pencils and got the students to decide what they're made of.
17:46 Then when they'd come up with all five of the component materials, we talked about which countries produce most of these materials.
17:54Dean Oh yes.
17:55 And we got volunteers to come to the front and mark the location of those on a map of the world.
18:01 I remember they were really keen to volunteer.
18:04 We had to stop them from calling the answers out loud.
18:06Hannah Right.
18:08 Then we brainstormed all the different ways of getting goods from one place to another and what the advantages and disadvantages of each one would be.
18:18 I remember one girl talking about using horses.
18:21Dean That's right.
18:22 She seemed to be a bit stuck in the past.
18:25 It was hard not to smile.
18:27Hannah Yes.
18:28 After that, uh, we put them in small groups and each group represented each of the countries on the map.
18:35 They had to use their atlases to decide an itinerary (lịch trình) for sending their raw materials to the USA.
18:42 specifying the different ports and places on the way there.
18:46Dean That's right.
18:47 And by the time they'd done that, it was break time.
18:50Hannah And after the break, they had to imagine they were pencil manufacturers (nhà sản xuất) in Chicago and fill in details on a worksheet about how they'd dispatch (gửi đi) their pencils to the different parts of the country.
19:01Dean Oh, yes.
19:02 Okay.
19:03Hannah And then we had a class discussion about whether people will still be using pencils in 2050 and whether the design of pencils is likely to change.
19:14 And to round the lesson off, the kids had to spend 10 minutes planning a short presentation for another class about possible developments (phát triển).
19:23 And that was it.
19:25Dean Good.
19:26 So I'll write up that part and you... [overlap]

Section 4

20:07Narrator Now turn to section four on page seven.
20:11 Section four, on page seven.
20:19 Section four.
20:20 You will hear a lecturer talking to a group of environmental science students about fuel made from biomass (sinh khối).
20:29 First, you have some time to look at questions 31 to 40 on page seven.
21:32Lecturer Good afternoon everyone.
21:34 In this course, we've been discussing the principles of sustainable development.
21:39 And now we're going to look at some of the ways in which these principles are being put into practice.
21:44 Today, I'm going to talk about the use of biomass (sinh khối).
21:48 And for those of you who don't know what biomass (sinh khối) is, it's plant material, usually agricultural waste (chất thải nông nghiệp), such as sawdust (mùn cưa) or straw (rơm).
21:58 And briquettes (bánh than) made out of biomass (sinh khối) are used as fuel, either in the home or in industry.
22:05 I'll start with the benefits.
22:07 Using briquettes (bánh than) has a financial benefit because they make use of waste products as raw materials (nguyên liệu thô).
22:14 So there isn't any cost involved for that.
22:17 Another advantage is convenience.
22:20 Handling briquettes (bánh than) is cleaner than handling materials like wood or charcoal (than củi).
22:25 Also, briquettes (bánh than) are less trouble to store because they're a uniform (đồng nhất) size and shape.
22:31 Right.
22:32 Let's look briefly now at how these briquettes (bánh than) are made.
22:36 There are two basic methods of manufacture.
22:40 The first method uses machinery (máy móc).
22:43 At the initial stage, all the loose plant material is ground into a powder.
22:48 And then mixed with other materials.
22:51 Next, a machine compresses (nén) the biomass (sinh khối) mixture, and that process raises the temperature and causes it to melt.
22:59 The machine forces the biomass (sinh khối) mixture out through rectangular (hình chữ nhật) or circular holes.
23:06 Then, as the pressure decreases, the mixture cools and becomes solid again.
23:12 And that's how the briquettes (bánh than) are formed.
23:15 It's important to point out that with this method, electricity is essential (cần thiết) to operate the machinery (máy móc).
23:21 And the exact amount you need depends on the type of biomass (sinh khối) you use.
23:26 But generally, the amount required is only 3% to 9% of the energy that's produced by the briquettes (bánh than) when they are burnt.
23:36 The second method involves making briquettes (bánh than) by hand.
23:40 This method is suitable when the biomass (sinh khối) is mainly composed of material that doesn't melt, like paper.
23:47 The biomass (sinh khối) is made into a paste by adding water and in addition, something sticky, such as starch.
23:54 This mixture is then shaped using either a simple metal press (máy ép kim loại) or bare hands.
24:04 So where is biomass (sinh khối) fuel used and how extensively (rộng rãi)?
24:09 Well, it's difficult to obtain detailed figures, but it's been used for several years in Europe and the USA, mainly for agriculture.
24:19 And since 2000, there's been a rapid (nhanh chóng) increase in the production and use of briquettes (bánh than) made out of wood waste.
24:25 I can give you a ball-park figure (con số ước chừng).
24:27 In 2010, about 5 million tons were used in Europe.
24:32 Some of these had to be imported (nhập khẩu) from the USA.
24:36 Moving further east, both India and China have been producing biomass (sinh khối) briquettes (bánh than) since the 1990s.
24:44 Detailed figures are hard to come by, but in China, in 2002, the number of factories producing biomass (sinh khối) briquettes (bánh than) had increased to approximately 600, and production is still growing.
24:58 I don't have information for Africa in general, but I can give you an example of one company in Uganda which is producing briquettes (bánh than).
25:08 Most of the company's customers are public institutions like schools and universities that provide hot meals for their students.
25:16 The other main users are businesses that need a source of heat for producing their products.
25:22 Okay.
25:23 Well, how viable (khả thi) are biomass (sinh khối) fuels like these in economic terms?
25:28 And what is likely to happen in the future?
25:30 Well, the answer depends partly on the price of the fuels that they replace, and that varies from place to place.
25:38 But in general, the demand for biomass (sinh khối) fuels is almost certain to grow, and that can only benefit the environment.
25:45 Let's turn now to another facet of... [overlap]
25:51Narrator That is the end of section four.
25:54 You now have half a minute to check your answers.
26:27 That is the end of the listening test.
26:30 You now have 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the listening answer sheet.
34:36 You have two minutes left.
35:38 You have one minute left.
36:40 Please stop writing and wait for your question booklet to be collected.
