00:00Narrator This is the IELTS listening test.
00:03 You will hear a number of different recordings and you will have to answer questions on what you hear.
00:10 There will be time for you to read the instructions and questions, and you will have a chance to check your work.
00:18 All the recordings will be played once only.
00:22 The test is in four parts.
00:24 At the end of the test, you will be given 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet.
00:31 Now turn to part one.
00:38 Part One.
00:40 You will hear a woman telephoning (gọi điện thoại) an eco-farm (nông trại sinh thái).
00:44 First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 5.
01:13 Now listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 5.
01:20Mark Good afternoon.
01:21 Lakeside Eco-Farm (Nông trại sinh thái), Mark speaking.
01:24Helen Oh, good afternoon.
01:26 My name is Helen.
01:27 I was listening to a program the other day
01:30 and it said that you are a member of the Northern Hotel group.
01:33Mark Yes, that's correct.
01:35 Are you a member of the group?
01:37Helen Yes, I am.
01:38 And I would like to find out about staying with you for a week during the school holidays.
01:43Mark No problem, Helen.
01:45 May I have your full name?
01:47Helen Helen Pennington.
01:48 That's P E double N I N G T O N.
01:53Mark Thank you, Helen.
01:55 And your email address?
01:57Helen helen123@email.com.
02:01 No dashes or underscores.
02:03 Oh sorry, actually it's probably better if I give you my work email address which is more convenient (thuận tiện) for me.
02:09 That is helen123@greenfield.com
02:15 and Greenfield is one word.
02:17Mark Okay, and your home address?
02:20Helen It is 66 Lake Road, Sheffield.
02:24Mark May I ask where you heard about us?
02:26 You mentioned a program.
02:27 Is it on TV or...
02:30Helen Actually, I heard about you on the radio,
02:32 and I thought it might be a good place to take my children during the summer holidays.
02:36 What kind of activities do you have?
02:39Mark Well here we have lodges in the woods, a couple of lakes,
02:43 lots of activities, and great food.
02:46 So I'm sure your whole family will love it.
02:49 I can give you prices for all these,
02:51 but first, could I have your membership (tư cách thành viên) number?
02:54Helen Oh yes, I think it's UK765042GE.
03:01 But I will just check.
03:02 It has been a while since I used it.
03:04 Just a moment.
03:06 Ah, actually, it is UK765024EG.
03:13Mark That's fine. Thank you.
03:17Narrator Before you hear the rest of the conversation,
03:19 you have some time to look at questions 6 to 10.
03:48 Now listen carefully and answer questions 6 to 10.
03:55Helen Can you see my information on your system?
03:58Mark Yes, I found you.
04:01 So regarding accommodation (chỗ ở) here at Island Eco-Farm (Nông trại sinh thái),
04:05 for families, I recommend our family chalets (nhà gỗ nhỏ).
04:08 As they are large and suitable for both adults and children.
04:13Helen Ah, okay, that sounds nice.
04:15 But a lodge is probably too big for us,
04:17 and I don't think we have much time and energy for cleaning.
04:21 So we would like to stay in a flat, preferably near the farm.
04:24Mark I'm afraid there's no accommodation (chỗ ở) near the farm.
04:27 Would you want to be located near the lake?
04:30 It's got a great view.
04:32Helen Actually, my daughter would prefer to stay in the forest if possible.
04:36Mark That's fine.
04:37 We have some lovely log cabins with room for four people,
04:41 which would suit your family.
04:43Helen Yes, that's the kind of thing we want.
04:45 I hope you have a wide range of food available.
04:48 My husband is a meat-eater,
04:49 I like seafood,
04:51 and my children like organic food, including plenty of vegetables.
04:55Mark Yes, we cater for all different types of diet.
04:58 So you can get all of those preferences here.
05:01 Don't worry.
05:02Helen Great.
05:03 So what is the transport situation?
05:06 Can we get there by ferry or van, for instance?
05:09Mark No, the best way is by train.
05:12 There's a regular service from Sheffield,
05:15 or there is a bike trail all the way here.
05:18 It generally takes about six hours to ride here from Sheffield.
05:22Helen That sounds good,
05:24 but it might be difficult with our luggage.
05:26 It's a pity you don't have vans or ferry boats.
05:29 But I think we will take the train.
05:31 So what activities do you have there?
05:34Mark We have a gardening course on planting flowers.
05:37 Would that be suitable?
05:39Helen I was hoping for something a little more energetic (năng động) to give us more exercise,
05:43 a dance course for example.
05:45Mark Hmm, that is something guests requested in the past,
05:49 but it's not something we are doing at the moment.
05:52 I will bear that in mind for the future though.
05:56Helen Okay, that would be great.
05:58 I need to get back to work, so can you email me through the prices and all the details?
06:02Mark Certainly.
06:03 I'll send all the details through to your work email address right now.
06:08Helen Great, thank you.
06:09Mark You're welcome.
06:10 And we hope to see you here at Lakeside Eco-Farm (Nông trại sinh thái) soon.
06:14Helen Thanks, goodbye.
06:16Mark Goodbye.
06:18Narrator That is the end of part one.
06:21 You now have one minute to check your answers to part one.

06:30Narrator Part two.
06:32 You will hear an introduction from a tour guide about suggestions (gợi ý) for an island.
06:37 First, you have some time to look at questions 11 to 14.
07:12 Now, listen carefully and answer questions 11 to 14.
07:19Hazel Hello everyone.
07:20 I'm Hazel, the guide from Travel Light agency.
07:25 Since we mentioned the trip to Muna Island in the last program,
07:30 we've received several online messages from those who have been there.
07:35 As a result, we've collected some helpful do's and don'ts for new visitors,
07:41 which will hopefully help you to know the island better and enjoy your stay to the fullest.
07:47 The first suggestion is about tips.
07:50 Although tipping is required in most circumstances (hoàn cảnh) in Muna Island,
07:56 the amount you should give differs significantly (đáng kể).
08:00 If you take a taxi,
08:01 there is no set rate on how much you should leave to the driver.
08:06 Someone may give a generous (hào phóng) tip if he thinks the service is fantastic.
08:12 It's up to you entirely.
08:14 However, if you go to the hairdresser's or enjoy a meal in the restaurant,
08:19 and the bill comes with no service charge,
08:22 a 10% tip is advisable.
08:26 Muna Island has got relatively good medical service.
08:30 If you get sick, the quickest way is to ask the hotel
08:34 to arrange an English-speaking doctor for you.
08:38 But remember, it's not a complimentary (miễn phí) service.
08:42 The other alternative (lựa chọn thay thế) is to visit the local clinic,
08:46 and you have to prepare for the charge as well.
08:49 I should remind you that the medical service on the island can be pricey.
08:55 So it's better to buy your insurance before you leave.
09:00 When you visit Muna Island,
09:02 you'll see the notice nearly everywhere.
09:05 Tap water is safe to drink,
09:08 but you might not get used to its weird taste because it contains minerals.
09:14 In this case, you can buy bottled water (nước đóng chai) sold in every shop,
09:18 but you'd better make sure the sealed lid is untouched,
09:22 as the locals often put tap water into the bottle.
09:29Narrator Before you hear the rest of the talk,
09:31 you have some time to look at questions 15 to 20.
10:05 Now listen and answer questions 15 to 20.
10:12Hazel Then I'll focus on transportation (phương tiện vận chuyển) in Muna Island.
10:16 The bus is the most commonly used means of transportation (phương tiện vận chuyển) for local residents.
10:23 Although there aren't many bus lines,
10:25 they're always on time.
10:28 However, some people complained that the road was so bumpy
10:32 that they even got nausea and dizziness.
10:36 As a result, it's not a good choice if you want to sit peacefully and relax on the way.
10:43 And another thing is, before you jump on the bus,
10:46 inquire of the driver about where the bus will go.
10:50 Unlike most cities, here in Muna Island,
10:54 you cannot find the destination (điểm đến) shown in front of the bus or at the bus stop.
11:01 Maybe you found the bus service is not so enjoyable.
11:05 In that case, you can always rent a car.
11:08 If you choose this way,
11:10 I advise you to prepare well beforehand (trước).
11:14 Although some taxi companies provide car rental services,
11:18 many visitors sometimes find nobody answering the phone.
11:23 So leave this way when you are in a hurry.
11:27 It's wise to compare several car rental companies online beforehand (trước),
11:32 as the price may vary a lot.
11:35 Booking via hotel may be overcharged (tính giá quá cao).
11:40 As it contains a 10% commission (hoa hồng).
11:43 So it's also not advisable.
11:46 More importantly, don't forget to check with the company
11:50 what the price covers in detail,
11:53 like daily rental expenses,
11:55 car insurance,
11:57 commission (hoa hồng), etc.
11:59 It usually includes unlimited mileage too,
12:03 but fuel is excluded.
12:06 If you don't want to drive,
12:08 a taxi is the quickest and most comfortable way,
12:12 although few are available on Muna Island.
12:16 If you want to find a taxi quickly,
12:18 it's not a good idea to reserve through the taxi company,
12:22 as sometimes you'll have quite a wait,
12:26 especially in the rush hour.
12:28 The easiest way is just waving your hands on the street to stop the taxi.
12:34 Otherwise, the driver will drive away directly after he drops off the guest.
12:40 Oh, another thing is,
12:42 I have to remind you that there is no meter for taxis in Muna Island.
12:48 So before you jump in the taxi,
12:50 you'd better negotiate (thương lượng) with the driver about how much you're going to pay.
12:56 For example, if you take a taxi from the airport at night,
13:01 it may cost you.
13:03 So confirm the price before you get in.
13:06 Okay, that's all about the tips for Muna Island that I want to share today.
13:13 And are there any questions?
13:17Narrator That is the end of part two.
13:20 You now have half a minute to check your answers to part two.

13:53Narrator Part three.
13:55 You will hear two students called Jeanie and Dan discussing some research (nghiên cứu) on the effects of music on consumer behavior (hành vi của người tiêu dùng).
14:05 First, you have some time to look at questions 21 to 26.
14:50 Now, listen carefully and answer questions 21 to 26.
14:59Jeanie Hi, Dan.
15:00 How's it going?
15:01Dan Hello, Jeanie.
15:02 Pretty well, thanks.
15:03 Have you finished your research (nghiên cứu) yet?
15:05Jeanie Yes, it's all done.
15:07 I've spent several weeks on it,
15:09 from the very beginning of deciding the topic,
15:13 to carrying out the research (nghiên cứu),
15:14 and writing the essay.
15:16Dan Congratulations.
15:18 Seems like a big project.
15:19 I know the research (nghiên cứu) has to do with music,
15:21 but what is it exactly about?
15:24Jeanie Well, at first I didn't have a specific (cụ thể) purpose,
15:27 until one day I read a report that said,
15:31 if appropriate music is played while people are eating,
15:34 it may cause some changes in their behavior.
15:38 But the report didn't illustrate (minh họa) the changes in detail.
15:42 So, I wanted to carry out a thorough investigation (cuộc điều tra kỹ lưỡng) into this.
15:47Dan That's quite unique.
15:48 So, how did you conduct your research (nghiên cứu)?
15:51Jeanie I started by looking for five different restaurants,
15:55 and then went to each of the restaurants to order some food,
15:59 and observe other people.
16:01 I mainly focused on how the music is played,
16:04 instead of how people eat.
16:06 Findings of my observations indicate (chỉ ra) that the five restaurants have something in common.
16:13 They all have a special section to play the music.
16:17 More importantly,
16:18 although the music is played at different times,
16:22 the volume is unchanged.
16:24Dan Sounds attractive.
16:25 I've never read anything about this before.
16:28 In addition to observation,
16:29 what other research (nghiên cứu) methods have you used?
16:32Jeanie I also distributed the survey questionnaire (bảng câu hỏi) to people dining there.
16:37Dan What questions did you pose in your questionnaire (bảng câu hỏi)?
16:39Jeanie Well, the first section of the questionnaire (bảng câu hỏi) asks subjects (đối tượng) to indicate (chỉ ra) the number of times they have been to the restaurant previously,
16:47 the number of people they dine with,
16:50 and whether they think they will return to the restaurant.
16:54 These early questions don't involve musical preferences,
16:58 but largely act as distractors (yếu tố gây nhiễu).
17:00 The intention being that subjects (đối tượng) will be less inclined to think that the survey is about the music being played.
17:08Dan That sounds very reasonable.
17:09 Did you design the questionnaire (bảng câu hỏi) by yourself?
17:12Jeanie Actually, no.
17:13 I read an assignment a student wrote last year,
17:16 which was just kept beside a dictionary in the library.
17:20 I came across it when I was looking something up in the dictionary.
17:24Dan Oh, you were so lucky.
17:26 Is there any other question included in the questionnaire (bảng câu hỏi)?
17:29Jeanie Yes.
17:29 Subjects (đối tượng) are also asked why they choose to dine at a particular restaurant.
17:35 Several reasons are listed in the questionnaire (bảng câu hỏi).
17:38 I thought people would put service first.
17:41 But that's not the case.
17:43 Only about 12% of them have chosen this reason.
17:47 While the majority of respondents (người trả lời) think
17:49 whether they will pick this restaurant depends on how many available seats it has.
17:55 They think it's terrible to eat in a crowded place.
17:59Dan Yes, everyone wants to enjoy a meal comfortably.
18:02 Then I guess maybe the location of a restaurant is an important factor,
18:06 since no one likes to waste too much time on the way.
18:09Jeanie It used to be.
18:10 But nowadays, nearly every household has a private car.
18:14 So, they don't have to be worried about the traffic problem.
18:18 What I find interesting however,
18:20 is that a large percentage of people say
18:23 they will compare different restaurants in the neighborhood on the internet first.
18:28 If one of them stands out from its rivals (đối thủ cạnh tranh),
18:31 they will choose it.
18:33Dan Wow, it's really interesting.
18:38Narrator Before you hear the rest of the discussion,
18:40 you have some time to look at questions 27 to 30.
19:05 Now, listen and answer questions 27 to 30.
19:13Dan What else then?
19:14Jeanie Well, the second section of the questionnaire (bảng câu hỏi) asks subjects (đối tượng) to respond to the music being played
19:21 by rating,
19:22 so that the relationship between music and perceived atmosphere (không khí cảm nhận được)
19:26 could be examined directly.
19:29 As a means of examining purchase intention (ý định mua hàng),
19:32 the final section of the questionnaire (bảng câu hỏi) asks them to
19:35 indicate (chỉ ra) the maximum amount of money they are prepared to spend
19:40 on their main meal.
19:42Dan So, what have you finally discovered?
19:45Jeanie I collected all the questionnaires (bảng câu hỏi),
19:47 and analyzed people's answers to get a clear idea of their reactions to different music conditions.
19:53 The result shows that music has become an indispensable (không thể thiếu) part of restaurants.
20:00 If people find there isn't any music during the meal,
20:03 they will think the restaurant charges too much.
20:06Dan Yes, now music is everywhere in our life.
20:09 Is there any difference in people's attitudes towards different musical styles?
20:13Jeanie Yes.
20:14 Most people think that if jazz is being played when eating,
20:18 they tend to stay at the restaurant longer and order more food to enjoy the music.
20:24 But this is quite the opposite of what happens when classical music is played.
20:29 Many customers think if the restaurant plays classical music,
20:33 they wouldn't like to stay there for another minute,
20:36 but to finish the food quickly and hurry away,
20:40 because they don't like this type of music at all.
20:44 And lastly, about pop music,
20:47 it's very popular these days,
20:49 especially among young people,
20:51 as I've noticed in restaurants.
20:53 They like listening to this type of music during their meals.
20:57 As a result, this greatly increases the possibility of their presence at the same restaurant.
21:04Dan Great.
21:04 I've learned a lot from your research (nghiên cứu).
21:06 I think it's meaningful and innovative.
21:08 Thanks for telling me, Jeanie.
21:10Jeanie You're welcome, Dan.
21:14Narrator That is the end of part three.
21:16 You now have 30 seconds to check your answers to part three.

21:28Narrator Part four.
21:30 You will hear an engineering (kỹ thuật) student giving a presentation about a research (nghiên cứu) project on design features (đặc điểm thiết kế) of the International Space Station (Trạm Vũ trụ Quốc tế).
21:40 First, you have some time to look at questions 31 to 40.
22:34 Now listen carefully and answer questions 31 to 40.
22:42Speaker 1 For my presentation,
22:43 I'm going to summarize (tóm tắt) the findings of a research (nghiên cứu) project on life aboard the International Space Station (Trạm vũ trụ quốc tế)
22:50 in the early days of its operation,
22:52 its teething problems (những vấn đề ban đầu), as it were.
22:55 I'll start by giving a little background information.
22:59 The space station crew were essentially a constantly (liên tục) changing team of scientists from different countries
23:05 who lived on the space station for several months at a time,
23:09 and they conducted a number of experiments,
23:12 including some studies of living conditions in space,
23:15 which is what I'm going to be looking at now.
23:18 So, what was life like on board in the very confined conditions (điều kiện chật chội) of the space station?
23:25 Well, the early impressions recorded by the astronauts were very different from what people had expected.
23:31 They'd expected that the air would smell stale (cũ) or artificial (nhân tạo).
23:36 But the astronauts found that it was fresh.
23:39 So that was one very positive finding.
23:42 And although they were in such a confined (chật chội) space,
23:44 and people worried that it would get very hot,
23:47 in fact, they found that it was very easy to turn the temperature up or down
23:52 in order to keep it within a comfortable range.
23:56 The feedback on the food was also positive.
23:59 Astronauts on previous space stations had described the meals as boring.
24:04 But the International Space Station (Trạm vũ trụ quốc tế) meals were praised for their variety.
24:09 So, that was another good piece of feedback.
24:12 And something which is taken for granted today,
24:15 but was a key morale booster (yếu tố thúc đẩy tinh thần) in those days
24:17 was communication between the space station and Earth,
24:21 which the astronauts said was clear and reliable.
24:25 So, in the early days,
24:26 it seems that the mood was overall very positive.
24:35 However, after a few days,
24:36 the difficulties and frustrations (sự bực bội) became clearer.
24:41 Above all, the crew complained about the constant noise
24:44 caused by the air filters,
24:46 which used to rattle and buzz 24 hours a day,
24:49 interrupting their sleep.
24:51 As well as that, the astronauts complained that the Velcro fasteners (khóa dán),
24:55 which were positioned all over the station,
24:57 didn't work well.
25:00 And so, a lot of the time,
25:01 objects weren't secure in the cabin but floated about.
25:05 A particularly serious problem was that the systems used on the space station
25:10 had been developed in a number of different countries,
25:13 and they didn't always work well together.
25:16 For example, it was impossible to mix the water produced from different systems,
25:21 because it contained different sorts of preservatives.
25:24 And these reacted together and blocked the pipes.
25:28 Another problem was connected to repairs.
25:31 At the best of times,
25:33 these took up an inordinate (quá mức) amount of time on the station.
25:37 And the crew complained that many of the tools that they'd been provided with
25:41 weren't suitable for the jobs they had to do.
25:44 So, they had to improvise (ứng biến),
25:46 which meant that jobs took a lot longer than they needed to.
25:51 Another related problem was to do with access to equipment that needed maintaining.
25:57 Because the instructions on the equipment were often located in places
26:01 where they were difficult to read,
26:03 like on the back of equipment,
26:05 it was often difficult or impossible to read them.
26:09 So, having identified these problems,
26:12 the researchers came up with a number of suggestions (gợi ý)
26:15 about how conditions could be improved on subsequent (tiếp theo) missions.
26:20 First, it became clear
26:22 that although there had been a great deal of consultation (tham vấn) with the crews,
26:26 the systems and equipment on the space station
26:28 needed much more wide-ranging (phạm vi rộng) testing.
26:32 Then, the whole issue of language training came under review.
26:36 Astronauts from different countries
26:38 had to be able to talk to the controllers on Earth
26:41 and to understand them.
26:43 Now, although they'd had extensive language training,
26:47 the astronauts sometimes had problems comprehending (hiểu) what was said
26:51 because they weren't familiar with the accent of the speaker.
26:55 And this sometimes led to quite dangerous misunderstandings (sự hiểu lầm).
27:00 Finally, and this is the point I found most surprising,
27:04 the researchers felt that the designers of the space station
27:07 were paying too much attention to safety,
27:10 rather than considering operating issues.
27:13 That is, how the station could be run comfortably and smoothly.
27:18 And the recommendation was to make changes here at quite a fundamental (cơ bản) level.
