00:02Narrator Test two.
00:03 This is the IELTS listening test.
00:07 You will hear a number of different recordings,
00:09 and you will have to answer questions on what you hear.
00:13 There will be time for you to read the instructions and questions,
00:17 and you will have a chance to check your work.
00:20 All the recordings will be played once only.
00:23 The test is in four parts.
00:26 At the end of the test, you will be given 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet.
00:34 Now turn to part one.
00:40 Part one.
00:41 You will hear a customer asking a travel agent for information about some trips.
00:47 First, you have some time to look at questions one to six.
01:18 Now, listen carefully and answer questions one to six.
01:25Customer Good afternoon.
01:26Agent Good afternoon. Atlanta Travel Agency, may I help you?
01:29Customer I saw your advert (quảng cáo) in the newspaper this morning
01:32 and decided to come over for more detailed information about some trips that you currently offer.
01:37Agent What kind of trips do you have in mind?
01:39Customer Well, I enjoy surfing very much and want to get tanned,
01:43 but all my friends suggest either mountain climbing or biking.
01:46Agent We currently offer all the three types.
01:48 Even though biking is the most popular type of holiday, it doesn't work for everyone.
01:53 I think you should follow your heart.
01:55Customer Right.
01:56 What are my options for accommodation (chỗ ở) then?
01:58Agent For this type of holiday,
01:59 you can choose to stay in a hotel or a self-catering apartment.
02:03Customer Can you introduce the hotel package first?
02:06Agent Sure. Price for our hotel package is quite reasonable compared with that of your own reservation.
02:11Customer What does the price include?
02:12Agent It covers the beach-side hotel and a free breakfast.
02:16Customer Good.
02:16 Does the hotel have any recreational (giải trí) facilities?
02:19Agent Oh, rest assured.
02:20 The hotel is fully equipped with a pool, a nightclub, and a gym.
02:24 Guests can enjoy a vibrant (sôi động) nightlife during their stay at the hotel.
02:28 Five-star ratings are common for the hotel's satisfying service.
02:32Customer So how much does it cost?
02:34Agent Well, it was originally 360 euros for an adult,
02:37 but we are now offering a Labor Day promotion (khuyến mãi).
02:40 You can get a discount (giảm giá) of 12.5%.
02:44 So that's 315 euros for now.
02:47 A really good deal.
02:49Customer Right.
02:50 What about the self-catering apartment?
02:52Agent Oh, that'll be even cheaper.
02:54 But you have to stay in a shared room with other guests.
02:57 Each room has six bunk beds (giường tầng) with lockers (tủ có khóa).
03:00Customer Okay.
03:01 I think the hotel is much better.
03:02 Getting a good night's sleep is critical (quan trọng) for a relaxing holiday.
03:06 I can't stand sharing a room with someone who snores all night long.
03:09Agent Can't agree more.
03:10 What about the surfing equipment rental (thuê)?
03:12Customer I don't want to bring my own surfboard (ván lướt sóng).
03:14Agent You can hire a surfboard (ván lướt sóng) by the hour, day, or week.
03:17 Just book it in advance, and it will be delivered to the hotel or even directly to the beach.
03:23Customer How much does it cost?
03:24Agent It costs 15 euros for a day,
03:26 but for a week's rental (thuê), it's just 75 euros.
03:30 The surf station also provides surf lessons if you're interested.
03:33Customer That's good to know.
03:37Narrator Before you hear the rest of the conversation,
03:40 you have some time to look at questions 7 to 10.
04:02 Now, listen and answer questions 7 to 10.
04:09Agent Oh, there's one more thing you should know.
04:11 Just in case of an accident during your trip,
04:13 we recommend each customer to have the correct travel cover in place before leaving home.
04:18Customer Please, tell me about it.
04:19Agent Well, we mainly offer two types of insurance (bảo hiểm).
04:22 The first one is basic coverage (phạm vi bảo hiểm).
04:24 It costs 30 euros.
04:26Customer What does it include?
04:27Agent It covers medical treatment during your trip,
04:29 and things like missing your flight, flight delays, and cancellations (hủy bỏ).
04:34 But you know, extreme sports can be quite dangerous,
04:37 and therefore injuries during these activities are excluded (loại trừ).
04:41Customer Then how about the other one?
04:42Agent The second one is called premier (cao cấp) cover.
04:45 It is more expensive at 42 euros 50.
04:49 But we highly recommend this one for regular surfers.
04:52 If you receive an injury or hurt anyone else while participating in extreme sports like surfing,
04:57 you are fully covered.
05:00Customer I see.
05:01 I think I'll go with the premier (cao cấp) cover.
05:03Agent When your flight gets in, there will be a minivan to pick you up at the airport
05:07 and take you to the hotel,
05:08 but you'll have to get to London airport yourself.
05:11Customer It's all right, I'll just take the airport shuttle (xe đưa đón).
05:13Agent Actually, I personally suggest you take a taxi.
05:16 It's much cheaper than other types of transport, including the airport shuttle (xe đưa đón).
05:20Customer Thanks for the tip.
05:21 I think I'll book a trip for next weekend.
05:24Agent Okay. How would you like to pay?
05:26Customer Do you accept credit cards?
05:27Agent Yes, we do, but there will be a slight charge (phí) on that.
05:30 If you pay by check, there's no extra fee.
05:33Customer Great. I'll write you a check then.
05:37Narrator That is the end of part one.
05:39 You now have one minute to check your answers to part one.

05:51Narrator Part two.
05:53 You will hear a member of staff called Mary Linden giving some information about their community center.
06:00 First, you have some time to look at questions 11 to 14.
06:23 Now, listen carefully and answer questions 11 to 14.
06:30Mary Linden On behalf of our community center, I'd like to welcome you all here today.
06:35 My name is Mary Linden.
06:36 As you can see here, this multipurpose (đa năng) hall is a great venue (địa điểm) for various events
06:42 including banquets (tiệc), seminars (hội thảo), or dances.
06:45 The center provides services for all ages.
06:47 As the majority of you have already signed up for our dance workshops,
06:51 I'll introduce relevant (liên quan) information first before we start the tour
06:55 and get ourselves oriented (định hướng).
06:58 Okay.
06:59 Now, when participants checking in for their first dancing session,
07:03 they will be given a class list,
07:04 printed with available seasonal classes ranging from Zumba to ballet,
07:10 as well as detailed descriptions and schedules.
07:13 The dance studio will also give you a complementary (miễn phí) shoe bag to store your dance shoes.
07:18 Every week will be a surprise in cardio (tim mạch) movement.
07:22 Our fitness professional will guide you through an upbeat, heart-pumping, lively dance class.
07:28 Therefore, it is highly advised to bring a face towel and a water bottle with you.
07:33 As things get mixed up easily, you might also want to attach a name tag to your belongings.
07:38 It will be sent to you by mail in advance.
07:41 Now, let us get a closer look at our dance workshops and its curriculum (chương trình giảng dạy).
07:46 There is a list of activities to participate during and after each session.
07:51 You'll have the chance to make your own costume,
07:53 but it won't be held until tomorrow.
07:55 You can also practice dance with music whenever the studio is available.
08:00 In the first afternoon and evening of your dance class,
08:03 there will be an introduction to the development of dance for the past few decades.
08:08 Then, we'll warm up with an informal dance.
08:12 I know you don't have much experience in dancing, but we'll get there soon.
08:16 Rest assured, there won't be a dance test until the end of the course.
08:23Narrator Before you hear the rest of the talk,
08:25 you have some time to look at questions 15 to 20.
08:56 Now listen and answer questions 15 to 20.
09:03Mary Linden Okay.
09:04 Now, a word about the layout (bố cục) of the center.
09:07 Our beautiful facility (cơ sở vật chất) has 25 rooms altogether,
09:10 which are both very functional (thiết thực) and aesthetically (thẩm mỹ) pleasing.
09:14 We are standing here right at the entrance.
09:17 To your left, you can see two rooms in a row.
09:21 After each dance session, you're probably soaking in sweat (ướt đẫm mồ hôi) and in desperate need of a shower.
09:27 Just go straight ahead, turn left, and the shower room is on your left hand side.
09:32 If you just want to take a nap, there is a six-bed bunk room (phòng giường tầng).
09:36 It's immediately to the left of where you are standing, right before the shower room.
09:41 We also have a games room with dartboards (bảng phi tiêu), table tennis, pool, and card games.
09:46 It is a good place to have fun with friends.
09:49 Just take the first right, it is the second area to your right.
09:53 You can explore it well later during our tour.
09:56 Further ahead, in the corner, there are the bike racks.
10:00 You can either park your bike here or hire one if you want to ride.
10:04 The first hour is free.
10:06 Part of our dance sessions will take place in the music room.
10:09 It has a large mirror with various musical instruments and state-of-the-art stereos.
10:15 If you want to get there, just go straight, take the second right,
10:19 and it's the second area to your left.
10:21 Our friendly reception team is an invaluable (vô giá) resource for any visitor to the center.
10:27 If your mobile phone needs charging,
10:29 we have several adapters (bộ chuyển đổi) and can easily get your phone back up and running again.
10:34 We also offer a range of chargeable services, including photocopy, scanning, and faxing.
10:40 The reception is located in the center to the south of the music room.
10:44 There is a medical center providing a full spectrum (phạm vi) of care and treatment.
10:49 Especially for sports injuries like a sprained (bong gân) knee.
10:52 It's right opposite the reception to the left of the music room.
10:56 Now, I have to tell you about our gym, where some of our dance sessions take place.
11:01 It is also equipped with the latest equipment,
11:04 including exercise bikes, treadmills, rowing machines, etc.
11:08 If you walk straight ahead before you come to the end and turn right,
11:12 it's the second room to your left.
11:15 And speaking of food, if you ever feel hungry,
11:18 you can either cook in the kitchen or grab a snack at the store.
11:22 To reach it, keep straight on until you get to the third passageway,
11:26 turn right, and it's the one after the gym.
11:29 And the kitchen sits right next to the gym on the same side of the passageway.
11:34 It has all the utensils (dụng cụ) you'll need, spatulas (phới), frying pans (chảo rán), ladles (muôi), and plates.
11:40 You name it. Just feel free to use it.
11:42 By the way, if you have coats, umbrellas, or any large bags with you,
11:47 the cloakroom (phòng giữ đồ) is available.
11:48 It's the room in the top right corner on the far side.
11:52 Right.
11:53 Well, if you're ready, we'll start the tour of our lovely community center.

12:11Narrator Part three.
12:12 You will hear a student called Karen discussing her assignment with her course tutor.
12:18 First, you have some time to look at questions 21 to 27.
12:55 Now, listen carefully and answer questions 21 to 27.
13:02Tutor Oh, Karen, hi. Come in. Take a seat.
13:06 I wanted to talk to you about this assignment (bài tập) you've handed in.
13:08 I'll give it back to you with detailed feedback (phản hồi),
13:10 but first there are a few things I'd like to run over.
13:13 You know, pointers (gợi ý) for next time.
13:15 When you hand in your next assignment (bài tập), can you ensure that you've gone through these aspects?
13:19Karen Um, sure, we'll do.
13:21Tutor Now, the first thing is your literature review (tổng quan tài liệu).
13:24 It was not sufficient (đầy đủ) enough, so I would like to see your book reports (báo cáo sách) to get your complete view.
13:28 So can you submit (nộp) those with your next assignment (bài tập)?
13:31 Then I can find out which parts you've chosen to leave out.
13:34Karen Oh, yes, sorry.
13:35 I didn't realize you needed them.
13:37 It did cross my mind that what I've handed in is a bit thin,
13:41 but then I started to work on another project and forgot to revise (chỉnh sửa) it.
13:45Tutor That's all right, and I've found some errors (lỗi sai).
13:48 Just small ones where you had quoted (trích dẫn) people but not recorded the information properly at the end.
13:53 Don't forget to go through and make sure that your references (tài liệu tham khảo) are accurate (chính xác).
13:57 They were very relevant (liên quan) though.
13:58 Just check and revise (chỉnh sửa) them, using the format sample that I've emailed you beforehand, okay?
14:03Karen Yes, I'll remember to check them.
14:05Tutor Now, you've made some good points, but it might be helpful if you could include a few other examples,
14:10 just to drive your point home.
14:12 Don't start writing more paragraphs, just slot them in at the end of what you've already written.
14:16 Now, the thing you have to do if you really want to get a better mark is expand (mở rộng) the ideas you're presenting.
14:22 Then your argument becomes more valid (hợp lệ).
14:25Karen Okay.
14:25 Hmm. Can I talk to you about the presentation (bài thuyết trình) I've got to do?
14:28Tutor Sure, of course.
14:30 When shall I stage what we've studied?
14:32Karen Am I doing it next term?
14:33 I can't remember what we said.
14:36Tutor Well, the thing is, Marco couldn't do it, so you agreed to do it at the next seminar (hội thảo).
14:41 So, how can I help?
14:42Karen Um, actually, I'm wondering what you suggest to be the key part of the presentation (bài thuyết trình).
14:47 I mean, which part should I spend most of my time on?
14:50Tutor That's a question to the point.
14:52 Well, you have very little time really,
14:54 so it's absolutely essential for you to explain the experiment.
14:57 Of course, you'll have a summary in the handout you give out,
15:01 but you can still start the presentation (bài thuyết trình) with that.
15:03 It's optional though.
15:04Karen And do I have to give you the abstract (tóm tắt) first,
15:06 or shall I just email it to all the students?
15:10Tutor Uh, no, I do need to see it first and see if it needs to be polished up.
15:14 And then we'll get some printouts done.
15:15 Now, they'll need to be done by the 3rd of December,
15:18 so I'll need to see it by the 26th of November if that's okay.
15:22Karen Yes, fine.
15:23Tutor Oh, and I need to talk to you about where the presentation (bài thuyết trình) is going to be made.
15:27 Given the actual number of participants (người tham gia) and audience,
15:29 we've had problems with the rooms because we'll need something bigger than usual.
15:34 In our faculty, the only room available is the computer room,
15:37 which is far from suitable, considering the layout (bố cục) of the room.
15:40 So we'll have to go across the road and do it in the chemistry lab.
15:43 It's big enough to accommodate (chứa) everyone and is equipped with the proper overhead projector (máy chiếu qua đầu) in there as well.
15:48Karen Okay, right.
15:49 And I get a grade for this, don't I?
15:52Tutor Yes.
15:53 Your first one was graded by your tutor,
15:55 but this one will be scored by the professor.
15:57 But relax, the criteria (tiêu chí) will be consistent (nhất quán) and you'll get an unbiased (không thiên vị) result.
16:04Narrator Before you hear the rest of the discussion,
16:06 you have some time to look at questions 28 to 30.
16:24 Now, listen and answer questions 28 to 30.
16:31Karen Oh, and I've sorted out my modules (học phần) for next year.
16:34 You asked me to tell you about my choices.
16:36Tutor Yes. What have you decided?
16:38Karen Oh, it was really hard to determine (xác định).
16:41 Um, I've already done the data collection (thu thập dữ liệu) once, so that wasn't really a choice.
16:45 I couldn't make up my mind between Language and Society and Communication Skills.
16:50 I read the syllabuses (giáo trình), but they sound more or less the same to me.
16:54 Anyway, I went for Communication Skills in the end because I know the lecturer (giảng viên).
16:58 Actually, social interaction seems to cover much the same ground,
17:02 so I didn't bother with that either.
17:04 Um, I thought discourse analysis (phân tích diễn ngôn) looked really interesting.
17:07 It studies and analyzes the text beyond the literal meaning (nghĩa đen) of the sentences.
17:11 It looks into the connotation (hàm ý) beyond the sentences,
17:14 and in fact, it also covers a little bit of research methodology (phương pháp luận nghiên cứu) in it.
17:18 So, I thought I'd do that rather than the full methodology (phương pháp luận) course.
17:21 Kill two birds with one stone, as it were.
17:23 And then I fancied something drastically different.
17:27 So, I thought psycholinguistics (tâm lý ngôn ngữ học) would be interesting,
17:30 unless you think it'll be more worthwhile for me to do the phonology (âm vị học) course.
17:33Tutor No, I think you've made sensible choices.
17:36 I'm glad you're organized.
17:37 Okay, let's meet again in a couple of weeks to see how you're getting on.
17:40Karen Okay, thank you.
17:42Tutor See you then.
17:45Narrator That is the end of part three.
17:47 You now have 30 seconds to check your answers to part three.

18:03Narrator Part four.
18:05 You will hear part of a lecture on bird research in Australia.
18:09 First, you have some time to look at questions 31 to 40.
19:00 Now listen carefully and answer questions 31 to 40.
19:07Lecturer Good afternoon.
19:08 This is the third session of the series of lectures on wildlife.
19:12 For this lecture, we're going to look at two studies on the habitats (môi trường sống) of birds and protection measures taken in Australia,
19:19 including the basic methodology (phương pháp luận) and related areas of research.
19:22 Now, let me give you some background information about the first research project on birds.
19:28 The study was carried out by R. B. Cunningham and his team from the Australian National University in 1995.
19:36 The primary goal (mục tiêu chính) was to detect the breeding habits (thói quen sinh sản) and nesting sites (nơi làm tổ) of some birds,
19:40 especially those protected species (loài được bảo vệ) in urban regions (khu vực đô thị).
19:44 These species (loài) included birds like Peregrine Falcons (chim ưng Peregrine) and Kestrels (chim cắt) in Australia.
19:49 The bird data set (tập dữ liệu) consisted of a total of 153 species (loài),
19:53 recorded from 946 sites.
19:56 One might expect that in order to obtain valid data on their distribution patterns (kiểu phân bố) and population densities (mật độ dân số),
20:02 researchers had to count through binoculars (ống nhòm).
20:05 Instead, they managed to estimate with various standard distance sampling methods like random sampling (lấy mẫu ngẫu nhiên).
20:11 In addition, a mapping system (hệ thống bản đồ) was used to study their companionship behavior.
20:16 It recorded proposed bird's nesting sites (nơi làm tổ) to monitor the mating behavior (hành vi giao phối) of targeted species (loài).
20:22 To obtain valid data of birds' whereabouts,
20:24 researchers attached identity tags (thẻ nhận dạng) to birds' legs, transmitting (truyền) radio signals.
20:30 The tagging process was done when the birds were between five and seven days of age.
20:35 After the initial (ban đầu) tagging, data was collected from subsets (tập con) of radio-tagged birds,
20:40 making it possible to assess the trends of birds over 15 months.
20:44 So, what did they find?
20:46 Well, as it turned out, many of the birds tagged had the tendency (xu hướng) to nest in the same habitat (môi trường sống) where they grew up.
20:52 Their nesting sites (nơi làm tổ) were quite varied (đa dạng) and included freshwater reed beds (bãi sậy),
20:56 tidal reed beds (bãi sậy), agricultural crops (cây nông nghiệp), and man-made sites (địa điểm nhân tạo).
21:01 Even though naturally occurring nests were common,
21:04 birds sometimes accidentally nested in man-made devices (thiết bị nhân tạo) like power towers (tháp điện), chimneys (ống khói), and tunnels.
21:11 This research also studied the impact of humans on bird communities
21:15 and found out that pollution (ô nhiễm) had contributed greatly to the declining birth rates (tỷ lệ sinh giảm) of some species (loài),
21:21 which were considered to be extinct (tuyệt chủng) or threatened to vanish from the study area.
21:26 These species (loài) are dependent on natural forests because of their breeding holes (lỗ sinh sản).
21:30 They will become extinct (tuyệt chủng) when local natural forests continue to be polluted (ô nhiễm) heavily.
21:36 A number of measures were thus taken by members from local animal conservation (bảo tồn) organizations
21:40 to boost their alarming survival rates.
21:44 Firstly, breeding boxes were placed in trees,
21:47 taking on the role of breeding holes (lỗ sinh sản) that were contaminated (ô nhiễm).
21:50 Protection guidelines were also introduced strictly prohibiting (nghiêm cấm) killing, disturbance (sự quấy rầy), and habitat (môi trường sống) destruction.
21:57 A further measure was taken to ensure the safety of birds from wind farms (trang trại gió).
22:02 In fact, birds are sometimes shed by wind turbine (tua-bin gió) blades.
22:06 A great deal of work was done on how to prevent them from colliding (va chạm) with turbines (tua-bin).
22:11 A case in point was protecting space for bird migration (sự di cư)
22:14 by ensuring that migratory routes (đường di cư) were kept free.
22:18 Falcons generally cope well with wind turbines (tua-bin gió),
22:21 but not in weather conditions where visibility (tầm nhìn) is bad.
22:24 So, with knowledge of how fast falcons fly,
22:27 bird stations in Northern Australia can notify wind farms (trang trại gió) further south of the falcons' approach
22:33 so that turbines (tua-bin) can be shut down as they pass by.
22:40 Then another piece of research was done a couple of years later by Conway in 2006.
22:46 His team detected the calling frequency of seabirds flying at night.
22:51 Acoustic signals (tín hiệu âm thanh) are important communication tools for birds.
22:55 These signals can indicate social cohesion (sự gắn kết xã hội), prey location (vị trí con mồi), and breeding behavior (hành vi sinh sản).
23:00 Courtship songs (bài hát tán tỉnh) are common among various species (loài) during mating seasons.
23:05 Males produce calling songs that attract distant females,
23:09 and then courtship songs (bài hát tán tỉnh) will induce (thuyết phục) nearby females to respond.
23:13 Surveyors (nhà khảo sát) also took recordings of the sounds of all the individual birds detected.
23:18 A tablet PC was used to process detailed information like sound pitch (cao độ âm thanh), spectrum (phổ), length, and timing of surveys.
23:26 To minimize (giảm thiểu) the disturbance (sự quấy rầy) on the bird community,
23:29 all the sounds were recorded from a distance, using microphones to detect noise.
23:34 They found that the probability of call events was much higher for solitary (đơn độc) birds communicating early and late in the day.
23:42 Further analyses indicated that during foraging (kiếm ăn),
23:45 the frequency of calls was significantly greater for birds encountering schooling fish (đàn cá)
23:51 and birds called sooner after a catch in these foraging (kiếm ăn) scenarios,
23:55 compared with when only single fish were encountered.
23:58 The results of this study showed that increased calling activity in the presence of more profitable (có lợi) prey could be of crucial (quan trọng) importance
24:06 to seabirds that benefit from group foraging (kiếm ăn).
24:09 So, does anyone have more questions on...
24:14Narrator That is the end of part four.
24:16 You now have one minute to check your answers to part four.
