00:06Narrator: You will hear a number of different recordings,
00:09Narrator: and you will have to answer questions on what you hear.
00:13Narrator: There will be time for you to read the instructions and questions,
00:16Narrator: and you will have a chance to check your work.
00:19Narrator: All the recordings will be played once only.
00:24Narrator: The test is in four sections.
00:27Narrator: Write all your answers in the listening question booklet.
00:31Narrator: At the end of the test, you will be given 10 minutes to transfer your answers to an answer sheet.
00:39Narrator: Now turn to section one on page two of your question booklet.
00:49Narrator: Section one.
00:51Narrator: You will hear a telephone conversation between a musician and a man working in a music agency.
00:58Narrator: First you have some time to look at questions one to five on page two.
01:28Narrator: You will see that there is an example that has been done for you.
01:32Narrator: On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.
01:40Jim: Hello, Music Alive. How can I help you?
01:43Woman: Hi. I've just moved to the area and I saw your advert.
01:47Woman: I wanted to find out about your services.
01:50Jim: Sure. What would you like to know?
01:51Woman: Well, I've got a number of questions if that's okay.
01:55Woman: Have you got a few minutes?
01:56Jim: Of course.
01:58Woman: Can I make a note of your name?
01:59Jim: Yes, I'm Jim. Jim Granly.
02:05Narrator: The man's name is Jim Granly, so Granly has been written in the space.
02:12Narrator: Now we shall begin.
02:14Narrator: You should answer the questions as you listen because you will not hear the recording a second time.
02:20Narrator: Listen carefully and answer questions one to five.
02:28Jim: Hello, Music Alive. How can I help you?
02:30Woman: Hi. I've just moved to the area and I saw your advert.
02:35Woman: I wanted to find out about your services.
02:37Jim: Sure. What would you like to know?
02:39Woman: Well, I've got a number of questions if that's okay.
02:42Woman: Have you got a few minutes?
02:44Jim: Of course.
02:45Woman: Can I make a note of your name?
02:47Jim: Yes, I'm Jim. Jim Granly.
02:50Woman: Thanks.
02:50Woman: And do you represent (đại diện) every type of musician?
02:54Woman: Can you tell me a bit about that?
02:56Jim: Well, we're basically a networking agency for musicians,
02:59Jim: but we don't actually find you work.
03:02Jim: We have all our members on our database (cơ sở dữ liệu).
03:05Jim: The type of music they play, and also we can put people in touch if they want to form a band, for example.
03:11Woman: Is there a lot of live music here?
03:13Jim: Yes, and venues (địa điểm) contact us when they need musicians, etc.
03:18Jim: We deal with modern music, especially rock, which is what most people seem to enjoy around here.
03:24Jim: But we do also represent (đại diện) some jazz musicians.
03:28Jim: We don't accept classical music, I'm afraid.
03:30Woman: No, that's fine.
03:32Woman: What do you play?
03:33Woman: Guitar and violin, and a bit of flute.
03:36Woman: As I'm new here, I thought you could help me get in touch with people.
03:40Jim: I see. Sure.
03:41Jim: We actually have a newsletter (bản tin) I could send you that would give you a good idea of what we do,
03:47Jim: and how you can benefit from joining.
03:49Jim: The latest one came out this week.
03:51Jim: Would you like me to send you a copy?
03:52Woman: That would be great.
03:54Woman: Is it weekly?
03:55Jim: No, every month.
03:57Jim: Weekly would be too much work, I think.
04:00Woman: Right.
04:00Woman: And what are the costs for joining and becoming a member?
04:04Woman: Is it expensive? I'm on a tight budget (ngân sách eo hẹp).
04:07Jim: You and every other musician in the region.
04:10Jim: No, we do everything to keep costs down because we know what it's like.
04:15Jim: We're pretty much all musicians ourselves too.
04:18Jim: So, to join is just 35 pounds, and that's a one-off payment.
04:22Jim: Oh, actually, that's the discounted (giảm giá) rate for young musicians, under 18s.
04:27Jim: The standard rate is 45 pounds.
04:30Woman: Unfortunately, I'm over 18.
04:33Woman: And how about joining?
04:34Woman: Can I join when I want?
04:37Woman: Now, for example?
04:38Woman: Or do you have a limit on numbers?
04:41Jim: No, you can join anytime.
04:43Jim: We don't have a limit on the numbers of members we can have.
04:47Jim: The more the merrier, in fact.
04:49Jim: Our membership's (tư cách thành viên) gone up recently from 700 to 750.
04:56Narrator: Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions six to 10 on page two.
05:29Narrator: Now listen and answer questions six to 10.
05:36Woman: That's good.
05:37Woman: And your ad says you also have facilities (cơ sở vật chất) there that musicians can use.
05:42Woman: Can you explain a bit about that?
05:44Jim: Sure.
05:44Jim: Well, it's not huge, but we do have a couple of rooms where you can rehearse (tập dượt).
05:50Jim: They're soundproof (cách âm).
05:51Jim: And we've just opened a studio, a small one,
05:54Jim: and it's already proving popular with bands that want to send demo tapes (băng demo) to venues (địa điểm) and record labels (hãng đĩa).
06:00Woman: Wow, that sounds brilliant.
06:03Woman: And is that free?
06:05Woman: Guess not.
06:06Jim: No, that's extra.
06:08Jim: But we do have some free services.
06:10Jim: For example, we can offer legal advice (tư vấn pháp lý) if you need it,
06:14Jim: for contracts (hợp đồng) and things like that.
06:16Jim: Pretty useful stuff, you know.
06:18Woman: Great.
06:19Woman: So, if I'm interested, what's the next step?
06:22Woman: How do I become a member?
06:24Jim: Well, simple, really.
06:26Jim: Just send us a letter with your contact details,
06:29Jim: and a recording made within the last couple of months.
06:32Jim: That'll give other members an idea of what you play.
06:36Woman: And where are you based?
06:37Jim: We're at 708 Kippax Street, Marbury.
06:42Woman: How do you spell Kippax?
06:43Jim: It's K-I-double P-A-X.
06:47Woman: And is there an email address?
06:49Jim: Yes, it's music.talent@bsu.co.uk.
06:56Woman: Talent as in the word?
06:57Jim: Yes.
06:58Woman: Right.
07:00Woman: Just one last thing.
07:05Narrator: That is the end of section one.
07:08Narrator: You now have half a minute to check your answers.

07:47Narrator: Section two.
07:49Narrator: You will hear the organizer of a fishing competition (cuộc thi) giving a talk to people participating (tham gia) in the event.
07:56Narrator: First you have some time to look at questions 11 to 14 on page three.
08:32Narrator: Now listen carefully and answer questions 11 to 14.
08:39Speaker 1: Hello everyone, and welcome to the Open E Fishing Competition (cuộc thi).
08:44Speaker 1: I'm going to give you some information you'll need for the next two days.
08:49Speaker 1: Right, let's talk about registration (đăng ký).
08:52Speaker 1: You'll need to head to the registration (đăng ký) desk before the event starts.
08:56Speaker 1: If you're here to compete rather than just watch,
08:59Speaker 1: you'll have already paid your entrance fee online,
09:02Speaker 1: and you will have been given a competitor (thí sinh) number.
09:05Speaker 1: But, to fully complete your registration (đăng ký) in the competition (cuộc thi),
09:10Speaker 1: we'll need to see some form of identification (giấy tờ tùy thân) today.
09:14Speaker 1: So, make sure you show that at the desk,
09:17Speaker 1: otherwise you won't be properly entered.
09:20Speaker 1: Right.
09:21Speaker 1: So, what do you get for your entrance fee?
09:25Speaker 1: This is a fully catered (phục vụ ăn uống) competition (cuộc thi),
09:27Speaker 1: so whenever you're hungry, either today or tomorrow,
09:30Speaker 1: just go down to the dining tent.
09:33Speaker 1: As for things necessary for fishing, you know, your hooks, rods, all your gear (dụng cụ),
09:39Speaker 1: I'm sure you've brought all that with you.
09:41Speaker 1: And if you fancy fishing from a boat,
09:44Speaker 1: you'll need to cover the cost of petrol.
09:47Speaker 1: Okay.
09:48Speaker 1: Now, if you want to fish in this country,
09:52Speaker 1: you must have a fishing license (giấy phép) and have it with you.
09:56Speaker 1: If you don't have one, don't worry.
09:58Speaker 1: You can always go online and they'll issue you one immediately.
10:04Speaker 1: We wanted to be able to sell them here at the competition (cuộc thi),
10:07Speaker 1: but the council wouldn't allow it, sadly.
10:11Speaker 1: I think it's also possible to call the department of fisheries (ngành thủy sản),
10:14Speaker 1: but they send them by post, so obviously you won't get that in time now.
10:20Speaker 1: Okay, so the competition (cuộc thi) starts today and ends on Sunday evening.
10:26Speaker 1: At 5:30 p.m., you will all have to stop fishing,
10:30Speaker 1: and at 6:00 p.m. exactly,
10:32Speaker 1: the judges will start weighing the fish to see how heavy they are
10:37Speaker 1: in order to choose the winners.
10:39Speaker 1: So, you'll need to be in the judging (chấm điểm) area before then.
10:43Speaker 1: The prize giving will happen later in the evening.
10:49Narrator: Before you hear the rest of the talk, you have some time to look at questions 15 to 20 on page four.
11:26Narrator: Now listen and answer questions 15 to 20.
11:33Speaker 1: Right, have a look at your maps and I'll point out the important places.
11:39Speaker 1: First, the registration (đăng ký) area.
11:42Speaker 1: To get to it, go to the roundabout (vòng xuyến) in the middle of your map.
11:47Speaker 1: From there, take the road that heads to the east.
11:51Speaker 1: You'll find the registration (đăng ký) desk on that road.
11:54Speaker 1: It's a nice shady area surrounded by trees.
11:58Speaker 1: Okay.
11:59Speaker 1: If you're planning to fish from the shore tomorrow,
12:02Speaker 1: then there's a specially designated (được chỉ định) area for you.
12:06Speaker 1: The shore fishing area is in one particular spot.
12:10Speaker 1: You can't just go anywhere on the coastline (đường bờ biển).
12:13Speaker 1: You'll find the area directly to the north of the skate park.
12:18Speaker 1: If you're planning to fish from a boat,
12:20Speaker 1: you'll need to go to the boat launching (hạ thủy) area.
12:23Speaker 1: To reach it, you should go to the roundabout (vòng xuyến) and take the road that's on the right.
12:28Speaker 1: Follow that road to the beach and that's where you launch your boat.
12:33Speaker 1: When the competition (cuộc thi) is over,
12:35Speaker 1: you need to take your catch to the judging (chấm điểm) area so we can determine (xác định) who the winner is.
12:40Speaker 1: To get there, head out from the car park and take the first road on your left.
12:45Speaker 1: Go past the first aid tent and the judging (chấm điểm) area will be set up down there.
12:51Speaker 1: Meals will be served in the dining area.
12:54Speaker 1: To get there, you'll need to go to the roundabout (vòng xuyến) and take the road that leads west.
12:59Speaker 1: Follow that road, and just where there's a sharp bend, you'll find where you can eat.
13:05Speaker 1: If you keep going, you'll come to a lighthouse.
13:09Speaker 1: If you're lucky enough to win, or you just want to see the winners get their prizes,
13:13Speaker 1: you'll need to head to the prize giving area.
13:16Speaker 1: It's north of the roundabout (vòng xuyến) past the playground.
13:19Speaker 1: The prize giving area is at the end of that road, right on the beach.
13:24Speaker 1: Okay, it's going to be a really...
13:30Narrator: That is the end of section two.
13:33Narrator: You now have half a minute to check your answers.

Section 3

14:12Narrator: Section three.
14:14Narrator: You will hear two first year art students called Max and Abby talking about their end-of-year art exhibition (triển lãm).
14:22Narrator: First you have some time to look at questions 21 to 26 on page five.
15:13Narrator: Now listen carefully and answer questions 21 to 26.
15:21Max: So, Abby, we have to prepare our individual displays for the end-of-year exhibition (triển lãm),
15:26Max: to showcase (trưng bày) all the work we've done for the first year of our art degree (bằng cấp).
15:31Abby: Yeah, Max, I've been thinking about how to put it all together.
15:35Abby: I'm excited about letting my friends and family see all the stuff I've produced (sản xuất).
15:39Max: Me too.
15:41Max: Actually, I'm really keen (háo hức) to see the work of the other students on our course.
15:45Max: I mean, it'll be great to see all the finished displays.
15:49Abby: But we've seen what they've been doing throughout the year already, really.
15:53Abby: Anyway, what about getting feedback (phản hồi) on our exhibition (triển lãm) from our tutor (gia sư)?
15:58Abby: I wonder what that'll be like.
15:59Max: Mmm, I'm a bit nervous (lo lắng) about that part.
16:03Abby: Mmm, I hope our stuff ends up looking as good as some of the displays in last year's exhibition (triển lãm).
16:08Max: Yeah.
16:09Max: Do you remember that display of printed textiles (vải dệt)?
16:12Max: Fantastic mixtures of silk and wool, all coloured with natural dyes.
16:18Abby: Yeah, I can't actually remember that.
16:21Abby: What sticks in my mind are those 10 wooden reproductions (bản sao) one student made,
16:25Abby: all of different types of transport.
16:27Abby: Little cars and trains and stuff.
16:29Max: Yes.
16:31Max: It was really delicate (tinh xảo) work and much harder to do than if he'd tried to construct (xây dựng) them out of metal.
16:38Abby: So, our tutor (gia sư) asked us to come up with a name for our display which reflects (phản ánh) the work we've done.
16:44Abby: What have you gone for?
16:45Max: Well, most of what I've done has focused (tập trung) on the countryside (nông thôn).
16:50Max: So I've been thinking of things connected to that.
16:53Max: A lot of my larger pieces are views of farmland.
16:57Max: That's not a particularly memorable (đáng nhớ) name though.
17:00Max: I've gone for Mother Nature in the end.
17:03Max: Though I did think about the name Seasons, as the fields are shown at different times over the farming year.
17:09Abby: Oh, okay.
17:10Max: Do you think it's going to be challenging (thử thách) putting our displays together?
17:14Abby: Well, I've pretty much come to a conclusion (kết luận) about which pieces I'll include now.
17:18Abby: I'll have to miss out some of my preparatory (chuẩn bị) drawings for the bigger pieces
17:22Abby: to make sure my best work fits into the space we've been allocated (phân bổ).
17:26Abby: I'm more concerned (lo lắng) about how long it will take me to put everything in place.
17:31Max: We've got a day and a half. That'll be plenty.
17:34Abby: Mmm, we'll see.
17:36Abby: What about writing the summary (tóm tắt) of our work?
17:39Abby: It's for people who visit the exhibition (triển lãm) to read, and I'm absolutely certain they will.
17:44Abby: It explains the reasons behind our work and they'll want to know what it all means.
17:49Abby: We've got a strict word limit to stick to,
17:52Abby: but I've got so much to say, it won't be easy to say it in so few words.
17:57Max: Mmm.
17:58Max: So, what about other organizational (tổ chức) stuff?
18:01Max: We'll need good lighting (ánh sáng) for one thing.
18:04Max: The technical (kỹ thuật) guys are doing that, aren't they?
18:06Abby: Yeah.
18:07Abby: One thing to do is copy a load of comment forms (phiếu góp ý)
18:10Abby: so people can write what they think of the exhibition (triển lãm).
18:13Abby: Hopefully they'll be kind.
18:15Max: I'm sure they will.
18:17Max: I don't know about the journalists (nhà báo) who've been invited though.
18:20Max: They might not be quite as nice to us.
18:23Abby: Well, fingers crossed.
18:25Abby: You never know.
18:29Narrator: Before you hear the rest of the discussion, you have some time to look at questions 27 to 30 on page six.
18:57Narrator: Now listen and answer questions 27 to 30.
19:04Max: So, our tutor (gia sư) suggested (gợi ý) visiting a few exhibitions (triển lãm) to look at the way work is presented (trình bày) and to give us a few ideas about improving and displaying our own work.
19:15Abby: Yeah, I liked the On the Water exhibition (triển lãm).
19:18Abby: The way the artist used the brush strokes (nét cọ) in the oil painting to create a sense of movement (chuyển động) was amazing.
19:25Max: Mmm.
19:26Max: It takes a long time to develop (phát triển) skill like that.
19:29Max: Maybe we'll get there one day.
19:31Max: What I liked about the City Life exhibition (triển lãm) was the fact that although the paintings themselves were of busy places,
19:38Max: the display itself wasn't crowded (đông đúc) at all.
19:42Max: Perhaps the fact that the paintings were actually quite small was what created a more open feeling to the exhibition (triển lãm).
19:48Abby: Yeah, though the way they were arranged (sắp xếp) wasn't especially unusual (bất thường).
19:53Max: And then there was the Faces exhibition (triển lãm).
19:55Abby: Yeah, I mean, painting people's portraits (chân dung) isn't a new thing,
19:59Abby: but what I did like was the way the artist managed to reproduce (tái tạo) the exact tones (tông màu) of the skin and hair of the people in the pictures.
20:08Max: And the last exhibition (triển lãm) we went to see was Moods.
20:11Max: Mmm, I expected (mong đợi) that to show emotions (cảm xúc),
20:15Max: people laughing, crying, whatever.
20:18Max: But it was about plants.
20:20Max: You don't tend to think of trees and flowers having feelings.
20:24Abby: And I'm not sure they do,
20:26Abby: but it certainly seemed that way in the pictures.
20:29Abby: Mmm, not the most obvious choice of subject, that's for sure.
20:33Max: Anyway, I guess we'd better get on with it.
20:39Narrator: That is the end of section three.
20:41Narrator: You now have half a minute to check your answers.

Section 4

21:20Narrator: Section four.
21:22Narrator: You will hear part of a student presentation about a conservation (bảo tồn) project on the Florida coast of the United States.
21:30Narrator: First you have some time to look at questions 31 to 40 on page seven.
22:26Narrator: Now listen carefully and answer questions 31 to 40.
22:33Student: Today I'm going to be talking about the first year of a regeneration (tái sinh) project in a mangrove (rừng ngập mặn) forest.
22:40Student: Mangrove (rừng ngập mặn) forests are found along river estuaries (cửa sông) and coastlines (đường bờ biển) and are important because they prevent flooding by acting as a barrier (rào cản) between the land and sea.
22:51Student: The mangrove (rừng ngập mặn) trees have special roots which can breathe (thở) and allow them to survive in thick airless (thiếu không khí) mud.
22:58Student: They are also a very important habitat (môi trường sống) for wading birds (chim lội nước), fish and other animals.
23:04Student: In the area where the project is taking place,
23:06Student: there have been a number of problems since the area was first settled (định cư) over 100 years ago.
23:13Student: Many of the mangrove (rừng ngập mặn) trees were initially (ban đầu) burnt as firewood (củi) by local farmers.
23:18Student: The mangrove (rừng ngập mặn) forests were also poisoned (đầu độc) by settlers' farming methods
23:22Student: because the farmers used fertilizer (phân bón) to increase crop yields (năng suất cây trồng),
23:26Student: and this started to seep (thấm) into the water.
23:29Student: Eventually (cuối cùng) killing part of the mangrove (rừng ngập mặn) forest.
23:32Student: Farming in the area wasn't successful and what was left of the mangrove (rừng ngập mặn) forest area
23:37Student: wasn't valued (coi trọng) by local people as crops couldn't be grown there.
23:42Student: And so what happened was that the area started to be used as somewhere to dump trash (rác).
23:52Student: Action was urgently (khẩn cấp) needed to protect the mangrove (rừng ngập mặn) forest and prevent flooding.
23:57Student: And so the mangrove (rừng ngập mặn) regeneration (tái sinh) project was set up.
24:01Student: The conservationists (nhà bảo tồn) involved decided to construct (xây dựng) a sand barrier (rào cản) around the forests.
24:08Student: But unfortunately, this proved to be ineffective (không hiệu quả).
24:11Student: The only way forward appeared to be to grow new mangroves (rừng ngập mặn) from seed (hạt giống).
24:17Student: Several species (loài) of mangrove (rừng ngập mặn) inhabit (sinh sống) the forests in this area of the United States,
24:22Student: but it is the gray mangroves (rừng ngập mặn) that we are concerned with here.
24:26Student: The seed (hạt giống) of this plant is about the size of an almond (hạnh nhân),
24:30Student: and most seeds (hạt giống) fall only when they are fully ripe (chín).
24:34Student: The mangrove (rừng ngập mặn) regeneration (tái sinh) project first began three years ago.
24:39Student: The first set of seedlings (cây con) was planted in small pots
24:42Student: and left to germinate (nảy mầm) in a hothouse (nhà kính).
24:45Student: The plants thrived (phát triển mạnh) and large roots appeared at the bottom of the pots.
24:50Student: Ideally (lý tưởng), these seedlings (cây con) should have been conditioned (điều hòa) with increasingly saline (mặn) water
24:54Student: before being planted in the sea.
24:57Student: They had, in fact, only been watered with rainwater.
25:01Student: As the plants weren't used to a saline (mặn) environment (môi trường),
25:04Student: it was decided to plant them out on the south side of a small island nearby.
25:10Student: It was hoped that this would allow them to get used to salt water gradually (dần dần),
25:14Student: since this part of the island was flooded (ngập lụt) every day at high tide (thủy triều lên).
25:18Student: There were over 100 plants planted in this particular spot,
25:22Student: and it was necessary to protect (bảo vệ) them,
25:24Student: not from the large number of wading birds (chim lội nước) which visit the area looking for food,
25:29Student: but from the large rabbit colony (bầy thỏ) living in the area.
25:33Student: The process for the second set of seedlings (cây con) was completely (hoàn toàn) different.
25:38Student: Young seedlings (cây con) were collected from the forests and then taken to a new site.
25:43Student: The seedlings (cây con) were then planted in the seabed (đáy biển) behind old mangrove (rừng ngập mặn) roots for protection.
25:49Student: However, this method did not prove very successful,
25:52Student: and the vast majority (đại đa số) of these seedlings (cây con) were washed away in a storm (bão).
25:57Student: Luckily, the first set of seedlings (cây con) survived (sống sót),
26:01Student: and this method is the one which the project will continue to use in the future.
26:06Student: Now, I'd like to describe in more detail the process...
26:12Narrator: That is the end of section four.
26:15Narrator: You now have half a minute to check your answers.
26:48Narrator: That is the end of the listening test.
26:51Narrator: You now have 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the listening answer sheet.
