00:01Narrator IELTS listening.
00:03 Version 16207.
00:07 You will hear a number of different recordings,
00:10 and you will have to answer questions on what you hear.
00:14 There will be time for you to read the instructions and questions,
00:19 and you will have a chance to check your work.
00:22 All the recordings will be played once only.
00:26 The test is in four sections.
00:30 Write all your answers in the listening question booklet.
00:34 At the end of the test,
00:35 you will be given 10 minutes to transfer your answers to an answer sheet.
00:42 Now turn to Section 1 on page 2 of your question booklet.
00:52 Section 1.
00:54 You will hear a telephone conversation between a man who's finding out about a preschool (mầm non) for his young daughter and a woman who works there.
01:04 First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 5 on page 2.
01:36 You will see that there is an example that has been done for you.
01:40 On this occasion only,
01:42 the conversation relating to this will be played first.
01:50Sally Good morning, Riverdale Preschool (Mầm non).
01:51 Sally speaking.
01:52Robert Hello.
01:53 My name's Robert.
01:54 I've got a four-year-old daughter called Suzy, and I'd like to get some information about your preschool (mầm non), please.
02:00Sally Sure, Robert.
02:02 Well, Suzy's the right age.
02:03 We take three and four-year-olds in classes of 20 students.
02:10Narrator The number of children in a class is 20.
02:14 So, 20 has been written in the space.
02:19 Now we shall begin.
02:21 You should answer the questions as you listen,
02:24 because you will not hear the recording a second time.
02:28 Listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 5.
02:36Sally Good morning, Riverdale Preschool (Mầm non).
02:37 Sally speaking.
02:38Robert Hello.
02:40 My name's Robert.
02:41 I've got a four-year-old daughter called Suzy, and I'd like to get some information about your preschool (mầm non), please.
02:47Sally Sure, Robert.
02:48 Well, Suzy's the right age.
02:50 We take three and four-year-olds in classes of 20 students.
02:54Robert Oh, great.
02:55 And how many teachers do you have?
02:56Sally We have two.
02:58 The first group is taught by Mrs. Oliver and the second group is taken by Mrs. Keogh.
03:03Robert Just a moment.
03:04 I'll write that down.
03:05 Could you spell the last name, please?
03:06 It's an unusual one, isn't it?
03:08Sally Yes.
03:10 It's K E O G H.
03:13Robert Okay, I've got that.
03:14 Now, I know the children attend for two or three days a week.
03:19Sally That's right.
03:19 The older ones, like Suzy, are here for three days,
03:23 which means 15 hours a week.
03:25 The younger ones, the three-year-olds, attend two days a week.
03:29 That's a total of 10 hours.
03:31Robert And what do they do during that time?
03:33Sally Well, half the day is spent outside,
03:36 and the children can run around and play games with their friends
03:40 or do a calmer activity,
03:42 like painting, for example.
03:44 We have a great outside play area
03:46 that we're improving all the time.
03:49Robert Yes.
03:49 We were walking past the other day and Suzy noticed.
03:52 You've recently put in a new slide, haven't you?
03:54Sally Yes.
03:55 We're really pleased with it.
03:56 It's a big one, and the children love it.
03:59Robert And are you thinking of adding anything else outdoors?
04:02Sally Well, we were hoping to build a playhouse,
04:04 but that was too expensive.
04:06 So, we're now making plans for a garden where the children will be able to grow flowers and vegetables.
04:12Robert Lovely.
04:13 And what else do the children do?
04:15Sally Well, the other half of the day is spent indoors.
04:18 This year, the children seem to be very interested in music.
04:22 So, the teachers are doing a lot of activities related to that.
04:26 Last year, there seemed to be more of an interest in dancing.
04:29Robert Well, Suzy would love either of those.
04:32Sally The teachers may sometimes play quiet games with the children,
04:35 but we always make time for a story each day.
04:38 It's a very important part of the program here.
04:41Robert Yes, of course.
04:45Narrator Before you hear the rest of the conversation,
04:48 you have some time to look at questions 6 to 10 on page 2.
05:23 Now listen and answer questions 6 to 10.
05:27Robert Now, I'd like to ask you about the fees, if that's okay.
05:30Sally Sure.
05:31 We actually had to put them up this term, I'm afraid.
05:34Robert Yes,
05:34 I heard from a friend of mine that it used to be $420 for the term, but it's just gone up to $470.
05:40 Is that right?
05:41Sally Yes, we had to add the extra $50 to cover costs.
05:45 Things got a lot more expensive last year.
05:48Robert Mmm, I understand.
05:50 And I think the fees are still quite reasonable.
05:52 Another school I've spoken to charges $500 per term.
05:57Sally Oh, really?
05:57Robert My friend also told me that his daughter went on a trip to the local zoo and that the cost of that was covered in the fees.
06:03 Is that right?
06:04Sally Yes, we did that last year, but we'll be going to a farm this year instead.
06:08 We vary it so, for example, we may go to the theatre next year.
06:13Robert Okay, it sounds like fun.
06:15Sally Also included in the price is membership of a special library.
06:19 Children can borrow a toy and keep it for a week,
06:22 and choose a different one the following week.
06:24 It's very popular.
06:25Robert What a great idea.
06:26 We would certainly make use of that system if we enrol.
06:29 Now, is there anything else I should know?
06:33Sally Well, the children have a rest here during the day,
06:35 and we make up a little bed for them with sheets and blankets,
06:39 but we advise parents to pack a pillow in the child's bag, as we don't provide one.
06:44Robert Okay, I'll make a note of that.
06:46 So, what should I do if I want to come and look around the school during the day and meet the staff?
06:52Sally The best thing is to call the teacher on the classroom mobile, and she'll tell you which time is best to visit.
06:58 Shall I give you the number?
06:59Robert Yes, please.
07:01Sally Okay, it's 0914 638 520.
07:07Robert Thanks for all your help, Sally.
07:08 And we hope to see you soon.
07:09Sally No problem.
07:10 Bye for now.
07:13Narrator That is the end of Section 1.

07:50Narrator Now turn to Section 2 on page 3.
07:56 Section 2.
07:58 You will hear part of a talk about how students can get help finding a part-time (bán thời gian) job while they're studying.
08:06 First, you have some time to look at questions 11 to 15 on page 3.
08:38 Now listen carefully and answer questions 11 to 15.
08:41Marissa Hi, thanks for coming along.
08:43 My name's Marissa, and I'm going to tell you a bit about finding part-time (bán thời gian) jobs.
08:49 Not everybody wants to work when they're studying,
08:51 and as this is your first year,
08:53 you may feel that you've quite enough to do as it is.
08:57 But you may change your mind, or find that you need to earn some extra cash.
09:02 However, if you are a student from overseas,
09:04 there may be particular conditions attached to working in this country,
09:08 so you should check with the staff at the center before applying for a job.
09:13 Right.
09:14 Now, the university has its own job center on the campus.
09:18 Well, actually, it's not on this main Hillston campus.
09:21 It's based in the Student Services building on the campus called Woodside,
09:26 spelled W O O D S I D E.
09:33 The center works on a drop-in basis,
09:35 which means that you don't have to make an appointment.
09:38 It's open six days a week, Monday to Saturday,
09:41 and nine hours a day, from 10:00 in the morning until 8:00 at night.
09:46 The center is run by other students,
09:48 but a professional employment lawyer is on hand every Tuesday,
09:51 if you want any advice about your job.
09:54 There may be a queue,
09:55 in which case you will have to wait.
09:57 So, make sure you allow plenty of time.
10:00 Part-time (Bán thời gian) jobs become available almost every day,
10:03 and they are advertised on the university website,
10:06 which you can access through the library if the computer center is closed.
10:11 You should check things daily,
10:13 and if you see a job which interests you,
10:14 call in at the center.
10:19Narrator Before you hear the rest of the talk,
10:21 you have some time to look at questions 16 to 20 on page 4.
10:52 Now listen and answer questions 16 to 20.
11:00Marissa There's a good variety (sự đa dạng) of jobs on offer in the university itself just now.
11:05 For example,
11:05 they're looking for people to check that all the vehicles using the university car parks have got up-to-date permits.
11:12 Office jobs rarely come up,
11:14 but in future, the university is hoping to be able to offer jobs in the IT center.
11:20 There are also recruitment (tuyển dụng) open days, which are held regularly during the year.
11:25 When local employers come into the university to recruit students for part-time (bán thời gian) work within their company.
11:32 These two-day events are scheduled well in advance each term
11:35 and are advertised in the usual places.
11:39 Of course, part-time (bán thời gian) work is useful to supplement (bổ sung) your income,
11:43 but it's also a valuable way of building up an employment record that reflects your skills and capabilities.
11:50 One of the most common complaints of graduates leaving university
11:54 is that many jobs require proven experience.
11:57 So, those applicants who have evidence of part-time (bán thời gian) work on their C.V.
12:01 often have an advantage.
12:04 The job center advertises jobs which will give you skills such as using word processing packages,
12:10 spreadsheets or supervisory (giám sát) skills.
12:13 So, if you have to work,
12:14 use the opportunity to develop skills which will help you secure a job in the future.
12:20 Now, what about the financial side of things?
12:23 Well, students who work part-time (bán thời gian) can no longer expect to be paid cash.
12:28 An employer will deduct tax from what you earn,
12:31 but depending on your own individual circumstances
12:34 and how much you earn in a year,
12:36 you should be able to reclaim some of this.
12:39 You may also have to contribute (đóng góp) towards an insurance scheme,
12:43 but you must ask your employer about these deductions.
12:46 You should also check whether you will be paid weekly or monthly,
12:50 and if you work extra hours,
12:52 what your overtime rate will be.
12:55 It's also necessary to make sure that your employer knows that you may only be able to work during term time.
13:02 Communication between you and your employer is very important,
13:05 but don't expect all employers to use email.
13:08 If you are ill or can't get into work for whatever reason,
13:12 make sure your employer knows in good time.
13:15 That shouldn't be a problem now that everyone has a mobile phone.
13:20 And if you decide to leave the job,
13:22 you should make sure you put this in writing.
13:24 Some employers require a month's notice,
13:27 even for a part-time (bán thời gian) job.
13:30 So, what sort of work can you expect to find?
13:33 Well, as I said earlier, there is a huge...

14:16Narrator Now turn to section three on page five.
14:22 Section 3.
14:24 You will hear a sociology student called John discussing his research project
14:29 about the use of public services with his tutor.
14:34 First, you have some time to look at questions 21 to 26 on page 5.
15:22 Now listen carefully and answer questions 21 to 26.
15:35Tutor Hello, John.
15:36 Come in and sit down.
15:38John Thanks.
15:39Tutor You're here to discuss your research project, are you?
15:42John Yes, I've more or less decided what to do,
15:44 but I'd like your opinion.
15:46Tutor Fine.
15:47 You've chosen a topic.
15:49John Yes, I want to look at how people use public services in their local area.
15:54 Things like parks and swimming pools.
15:57Tutor Right.
15:58 Well, the kind of information you'll get is very useful for town planning, of course.
16:03 Do you have a special interest in public services?
16:06John Not really.
16:07 It's just that I found a report in the college library
16:10 about an investigation that was done 10 years ago,
16:13 and I thought it'd be interesting to do a parallel (song song) one.
16:17Tutor Mmm.
16:18 Ten years is a relatively short space of time.
16:20 What do you expect to find?
16:22 Do you think things will be more or less the same as before?
16:26John I think there'll be some differences.
16:28 For example,
16:29 I think the number of people going to the library will have decreased.
16:34 And I'd guess that older people are using the sports center more often than they used to.
16:40Tutor Fine.
16:41 So, those are your hypotheses (giả thuyết).
16:44 Now, what sort of data are you going to use?
16:47John I was thinking of using official records,
16:50 from the management or the local council and analyzing them.
16:55 They should be easy to obtain.
16:57 I don't think that sort of information would be confidential (bí mật).
17:01Tutor Yes, you're probably right.
17:03 There might not be as much information as you'd like,
17:06 but it'd certainly be the easiest kind of data to work with.
17:10 But have you considered using a questionnaire as well?
17:14John It's okay to get data from more than one source.
17:17Tutor Absolutely.
17:18 It's a bonus.
17:19 You've already done the module on questionnaire design, haven't you?
17:23John Mmm.
17:23Tutor And it'll be good to get experience because next year you'll have to do something similar for your final dissertation on a bigger scale.
17:31John Okay.
17:33Tutor And what are the variables you'll be looking at?
17:36 Are you going to look at people's level of education?
17:39 Whether they have a degree, for example.
17:42John I hadn't planned to.
17:43 Do you think I should?
17:44Tutor Well, you might see some interesting patterns.
17:47John Okay.
17:48 And that'll tie in nicely with my plans to analyze the kind of work people do.
17:53Tutor Mmm.
17:53 What about the size of your sample?
17:56 Have you got any thoughts on the number of questionnaires you might send out?
18:00John The previous study surveyed 120 people.
18:04 I don't think I can really analyze more than 50 working by myself,
18:08 so I should probably distribute about 80 questionnaires altogether to allow for wastage.
18:14 Do you think that's enough?
18:16Tutor Definitely.
18:17 I know that your project guidelines recommend a minimum of 100,
18:21 but that's an ideal number and you're working by yourself.
18:25 And anyway, this assignment is mainly about giving you practice in research methods.
18:30John Right.
18:34Narrator Before you hear the rest of the discussion,
18:37 you have some time to look at questions 27 to 30 on page 6.
19:08 Now listen and answer questions 27 to 30.
19:11Tutor And think of ways you can encourage people to actually complete the questionnaire.
19:16 For example, to make sure that your questions make sense, you should try them out beforehand.
19:21John Okay.
19:22 That's no problem.
19:23 My friends will help.
19:24Tutor Good.
19:25 Sometimes you get unpredicted (không lường trước) responses,
19:27 and you have to rephrase a question.
19:31John And, I know that you usually get a better return if you deliver questionnaires in person,
19:36 but there'll be too many.
19:38 But I could enclose a stamped envelope for the return post.
19:42 It's a bit expensive, but I think it'd be worth it.
19:46Tutor Yes, good.
19:48 Some people say that another way of increasing returns is to make the questionnaire anonymous,
19:53 but usually people put their names on anyway.
19:56 So I don't think that would make much difference.
19:58John Okay.
19:59 And can you give me a bit more advice about the questionnaire?
20:03 Would it be a good idea to have a short paragraph at the top explaining what I'm doing and why?
20:09Tutor Definitely.
20:10 And don't forget you'll need to get a bit of information about your subjects.
20:14 What age group they're in and perhaps how long they've lived in the area.
20:18 So you'll need questions for that.
20:20John Oh, yes.
20:22 I suppose that'll mean it takes a bit longer to complete,
20:25 but uh...
20:26 Should I give them my phone number in case there's anything they're not sure about?
20:31Tutor I wouldn't if I were you.
20:32 No.
20:33John Okay.
20:34Tutor And do I have to use open-ended (không có câu trả lời cố định) questions as well as closed questions?
20:39 I know the books say it's better to have a mixture.
20:42John Well, it depends.
20:44Tutor In this case, I'd stick to closed questions.
20:48 The results will be much more manageable like that.
20:51John If I draft some questions tomorrow, would it be okay to bring them to...

21:35Narrator Now turn to Section 4 on page 7.
21:40 Section 4.
21:42 You will hear a tutor talking to a group of students about a project to build a driverless vehicle.
21:51 First, you have some time to look at questions 31 to 40 on pages 7 and 8.
22:50 Now listen carefully and answer questions 31 to 40.
23:07Tutor Hello, everyone.
23:08 I have an exciting announcement to make.
23:10 The university has decided to enter an international competition next year,
23:15 and we're going to need some enthusiastic undergraduates to help us with the project.
23:22 The competition is to make an automated vehicle,
23:25 a kind of robot that will be able to move quickly and accurately on its own.
23:33 All the vehicles will then enter a race which will take place here in the US.
23:38 So, the engineering school will be collaborating with the computer science department
23:42 and possibly the automotive (tự động) design department,
23:46 although that's yet to be confirmed.
23:49 What they have to do is try to design an automated vehicle which will be able to complete the course.
23:56 To give you an idea of how tough this race is,
23:59 one vehicle last year only managed 12 kilometers of the 280-kilometer stretch of California desert
24:08 that forms the racetrack.
24:11 The vehicles in the race must cover the whole distance without a human driver and,
24:17 quite autonomously,
24:19 identify and steer around corners and avoid unexpected (bất ngờ) hazards,
24:25 things like rocks, for example.
24:27 It's a challenging task because there are lots of obstacles of this kind along the route.
24:34 As I said, in last year's event, the most successful vehicle only drove 12 kilometers.
24:41 Then its team decided to deactivate it because it had got too near a cliff.
24:47 In the race held earlier this year, there still wasn't a winner,
24:51 but they did much better,
24:52 and there was one design which we will be analyzing carefully in seminars.
24:58 Its strength was in its onboard technology.
25:03 That particular vehicle built a three-dimensional (ba chiều) picture of its surroundings using video cameras and lasers.
25:10 It was equipped with seven laptop computers which analyzed the incoming information 10 times a second.
25:19 And it drove along at a comfortable 55 kilometers per hour.
25:24 The design details have been published,
25:26 so we hope to learn from them and go on to make ours even better for next year's competition.
25:34 The competition is open to all universities, and there's a prize of $2 million for the winner.
25:41 But it's really about more than that.
25:44 The sponsors are hoping to see innovative design ideas
25:47 that they can transfer into commercial production.
25:51 You'll get a lot out of this project as well,
25:53 in terms of working as a team and broadening your knowledge of the subject.
25:59 The key to winning is unlikely to be anything to do with what the vehicle looks like.
26:05 Programming skills will decide who eventually wins first prize.
26:10 The design will need technological expertise (chuyên môn) in this area above all,
26:15 and that's what the team who work on the project will need to focus on.
26:20 I'll be handing out some scientific reports about this year's vehicle shortly.
26:25 It's interesting to read that even after months and months of planning, building and trials,
26:31 many of the teams were amazed that the vehicles did what they wanted them to do at all
26:37 because so many things can go wrong on the day.
26:40 So, even though no vehicle actually completed the course,
26:44 they were pleased they got as far as they did.
26:52 Right.
26:53 If any of you are interested, this is the plan of action.
26:57 Keep an eye on the main notice board for details.
27:01 Firstly, at the beginning of May, we'll be scheduling a seminar to introduce the project to anyone who might be interested.
27:09 Later in the month, we'll be asking you to submit a short essay,
27:12 letting us know why you feel you should be chosen to take part in the project.
27:18 You'll need to tell us about any particular skills that you have and can bring to the team,
27:23 and any experience you may have had in the field.
27:27 Then, in June,
27:28 we're organizing a trip to a factory to chat over some design considerations with specialists there
27:35 who have kindly agreed to act as consultants throughout the project.
27:40 Then, at the beginning of the next semester, in September,
27:43 we thought we'd hold a weekend workshop to share ideas and see computer-aided design demonstrations.
27:51 We have a brand new package which sponsors have kindly financed.
27:56 You'll need to be able to use it with confidence before we start.
28:00 In December, we'll be asking you to submit your outline designs,
28:04 and the following month, we'll choose the team and start work in earnest.
28:10 Okay,
28:11 it sounds like a lot of fun, but it will also require serious commitment.
28:17 So please think this through carefully.
28:20 Some handouts are coming around now.
28:22 Any questions?
28:26Narrator That is the end of Section 4.
28:29 You now have half a minute to check your answers.
