00:01Narrator IELTS listening.
00:03 Version 55529.
00:06 You will hear a number of different recordings, and you will have to answer questions on what you hear.
00:13 There will be time for you to read the instructions and questions, and you will have a chance to check your work.
00:20 All the recordings will be played once only.
00:25 The test is in four parts.
00:29 Write all your answers in the listening question booklet.
00:33 At the end of the test, you will be given 10 minutes to transfer your answers to an answer sheet.
00:41 Now turn to part one on page two of your question booklet.
00:50 Part one.
00:52 You will hear a telephone conversation between a park reservations employee and a woman who wants to book a campsite (khu cắm trại).
01:01 First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 6.
01:35 Now listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 6.
01:43Employee Nature Park Services.
01:44 How may I help you today?
01:46Sandra Hello, I'm calling to make a campsite (khu cắm trại) reservation (đặt chỗ).
01:50Employee Great.
01:51 Let me just pull up the reservation (đặt chỗ) form and we can get started.
01:55 Okay.
01:56 First, could I get your name?
01:58Sandra Sure, it's Sandra Kemp.
02:00Employee All right, Ms. Kemp.
02:02 I can make reservations (đặt chỗ) for the northern, central, and southern (phía nam) California parks.
02:07 Which region will you be traveling to?
02:09Sandra Is Mount Laguna in the central or southern region (vùng phía nam)?
02:13Employee Is that where you're going?
02:14Sandra Yes.
02:16Employee That's southern (phía nam).
02:17 Do you know which campground (khu cắm trại)?
02:18Sandra Actually, I was hoping you could help me with that.
02:22 I've read a lot about two different campgrounds (khu cắm trại), Sunrise and Mountain, but I can't decide.
02:29 Mountain campground (khu cắm trại) has many hiking trails close by.
02:33 But then again, Sunrise campground (khu cắm trại) is next to the lake and my husband loves to fish.
02:40Employee Hmm.
02:41 They're both really beautiful spots.
02:44 I guess it depends on when you're going.
02:46Sandra Really?
02:46 Well, we're going in April.
02:49Employee The thing is, fishing at Sunrise campground (khu cắm trại) is only allowed from June to September.
02:55 So I suggest Mountain.
02:57Sandra Okay then, that makes it easy.
03:00Employee So we've selected the campground (khu cắm trại).
03:02 So now we need to think about which sort of site.
03:06 There are different options.
03:07 You can stay at a cabin, a tent, or a recreational vehicle campsite (khu cắm trại xe giải trí).
03:13Sandra Which type of site offers the most peace and quiet?
03:16Employee A tent site would be your best bet.
03:19Sandra Sounds good to me.
03:20Employee Um, so, if you've read about the park, you probably know that some vehicles aren't suitable for the park roads.
03:28 Cars tend to get stuck when it rains.
03:31 If you have a truck, you won't have any trouble.
03:34Sandra Luckily we do.
03:35 We'll be driving that instead of our car.
03:38 I hope we don't get any rain, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.
03:42Employee Perfect.
03:44 I'll just need to get your license plate (biển số xe) number.
03:46Sandra That's QY0918.
03:51Employee Thanks.
03:51 And what about your trip dates?
03:53Sandra Uh, we'd like to stay for three days.
03:56Employee Does that mean you'll be staying two nights?
03:58Sandra That's right.
03:59 We'll be arriving on April 10th and leaving on the 12th.
04:06Narrator Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 7 to 10.
04:32 Now listen and answer questions 7 to 10.
04:39Employee Now, the park is home to some black bears.
04:42 So you'll need to rent a bear-proof food container to lock your food inside for hikes.
04:47 It's really just a precaution (sự phòng ngừa).
04:49 We have small, medium, and large food containers for campers.
04:53Sandra Oh, I'm familiar with food containers, but they can be heavy.
04:57Employee Well, the large one is, but if you get the small size, it's not so heavy.
05:02Sandra Let's do that.
05:04 I really want something lightweight.
05:06Employee Would you be interested in signing up for a guided nature walk on the second day of your trip?
05:11Sandra What kind of walk?
05:12Employee Well, at 7:00 a.m., there are three different ones near your campground (khu cắm trại).
05:17 There's the flower walk, the bird watching walk, and the waterfall walk.
05:21Sandra Really?
05:22 I love gardening, so the flower walk sounds interesting.
05:27 My son might be more into the waterfall one, but I can't imagine him getting up in time.
05:33 Maybe I could go alone.
05:34 Could you sign me up?
05:36Employee Sure.
05:37 Now, just a few more things.
05:39 Visitors must purchase park passes as well.
05:42 You have the option of the one-day pass, which would be cheaper, or the one-year pass, which is a better deal if you plan to go to more parks.
05:50Sandra Let's go ahead and get that.
05:52 I'm sure we'll visit more parks soon.
05:55Employee It's a really good bargain.
05:57 Plus, we donate $5 of the pass fee to one of our three park programs.
06:02 You get to choose which one.
06:03Sandra Park programs?
06:04Employee Yes.
06:05 Well, we run a youth program for local kids to attend a nature camp in the summer.
06:10 The other two options are conservation projects.
06:13 There's a wildlife program and a tree planting program.
06:16Sandra Wow, they all sound worthwhile.
06:19 What should I do?
06:21 Um, it's important for children to appreciate the outdoors.
06:25 Let's go with the youth program.
06:27Employee Okay.
06:28 We just need to review the fee and payment information.
06:35Narrator That is the end of part one.
06:37 You now have one minute to check your answers to part one.

07:38Narrator Part two.
07:39 You will hear a hotel manager talking to some new staff.
07:45 First, you have some time to look at questions 11 to 15.
08:24 Now listen carefully and answer questions 11 to 15.
08:32Manager Good morning, all of you.
08:33 I do apologize (xin lỗi) for being a little late starting our meeting.
08:37 One of our guests has been taken ill.
08:39 And Suzy, who's our assistant manager, has driven him to the hospital, but she was in the middle of compiling (biên soạn) our weekly report for head office, which is urgent, and I had to finish writing it for her.
08:52 Now, this is the first day of work at the Ocean Edge Hotel for all of you.
08:57 Let me say something that might surprise you.
08:59 You've all got a qualification in hospitality (ngành khách sạn) and some of you have got very high grades.
09:06 But to me, what counts most is that you enjoy the contact with guests, and really want to make a career in the hospitality (ngành khách sạn) industry.
09:16 You'll be getting some very valuable experience here, so make the most of it.
09:21 A few words about the history of the Ocean Edge Hotel.
09:25 There have been buildings on this site for about 250 years.
09:30 We know that in the 18th century, there was a bakery here when the town was very new.
09:36 The building was destroyed by fire in the early 19th century, and houses were constructed on the site.
09:43 These, in their turn, were demolished (phá hủy) in the middle of the 20th century and replaced by the hotel.
09:50 I think it's fair to say that this is a popular place to work.
09:55 We're always getting job applications from local people, even when we haven't any vacancies (vị trí trống).
10:01 And whereas in many hotels, staff tend to stay for a year or even less, here, five is pretty standard, and in fact, several of our staff have been here for 10 years or more.
10:15 You're the first people we've appointed in the last three years, and we only needed to do that because we're currently constructing 25 new bedrooms.
10:26 Depending on their location, hotels usually have mostly business guests or mostly tourists.
10:33 We attract a large number of tourists who come to spend a few days beside the ocean.
10:38 We also have quite a lot of people who are here on business and perhaps stay for one or two nights.
10:46 What we've noticed recently though is that we're getting more and more regulars (khách quen).
10:51 People staying here for four nights every week because they have jobs in this locality, but live somewhere else in the country, so they go home for the weekend.
11:05Narrator Before you hear the rest of the talk, you have some time to look at questions 16 to 20.
11:37 Now listen and answer questions 16 to 20.
11:44Manager Now let me give you an idea of the layout (bố trí) of the hotel.
11:49 All the bedrooms are along walkways in the gardens, and the main building, which we're in now, has most of the other rooms that guests use.
11:58 Obviously, when they arrive, the first place they find themselves in is the reception area, where we're sitting.
12:06 The desk is over on the right of the entrance and the office is immediately behind it.
12:11 There's a connecting door from the desk itself and another entrance from the corridor.
12:17 A lot of local residents hire the function room (phòng chức năng) for parties and other events.
12:23 This is right at the front of the hotel, on the left of the reception area opposite the desk.
12:29 This room is booked several evenings a week and most weekends.
12:34 It's a major source of income.
12:37 Companies are very important customers for us, and a large number of local firms hold conferences here.
12:45 To reach the main conference room, you go past the fountain as far as you can and the door's directly in front of you.
12:54 The meeting room is often hired by companies and other local organizations for small gatherings.
13:00 For this room, you turn into the corridor at the side of the reception desk, and you'll see the room facing you at the end of the corridor.
13:10 Our restaurant is open to the public as well as to hotel residents, and I'm pleased to say it has a very good reputation (danh tiếng) locally.
13:20 You turn left just before the fountain as though you're heading for the guests' rooms, and it's the large room on your right.
13:28 Next, I should mention that there is...
13:34Narrator That is the end of part two.
13:36 You now have 30 seconds to check your answers to part two.

14:07Narrator Part three.
14:09 You will hear a conversation between an art history student called Terence and his tutor about the student's plan for a class presentation.
14:19 First, you have some time to look at questions 21 to 24.
14:54 Now listen carefully and answer questions 21 to 24.
15:02Tutor Okay, Terence.
15:03 Now, I've looked through your preliminary outline (dàn ý sơ bộ) and notes for the presentation on the art of the Ife region in Africa.
15:13 That's in Nigeria, right?
15:15Terence Yes.
15:16 I'm concentrating on Ife sculptures (tác phẩm điêu khắc) from the 12th to the 15th century.
15:21Tutor How did you get interested in that?
15:24 I know there have been some recent articles in the journals about African sculpture (nghệ thuật điêu khắc).
15:29Terence Well, I've read most of those now.
15:32 But initially, I got my introduction to this at a special display at the City Museum a few years ago.
15:38 I just happened to be there and saw these works and thought they were fantastic.
15:43 And I even went to Nigeria last summer to see more of them.
15:47Tutor I've seen the photos for your presentation, and I must say the sculptures (tác phẩm điêu khắc) are gorgeous portrayals (sự miêu tả) of what appear to be kings and queens.
15:57Terence Yes, I decided to concentrate on those as they're the most typical.
16:02 They're interesting because they're so naturalistic (tự nhiên), unlike the abstract (trừu tượng) figures we often associate with African art.
16:09 There's also a lovely sculpture (tác phẩm điêu khắc) of a mudfish and one of the scaly crocodile.
16:15 But I didn't get very good pictures of those, so I won't spend long on them.
16:19Tutor Right.
16:20 So what was the city of Ife like when these works were made?
16:24 It's on the Niger River, isn't it?
16:26Terence Yeah.
16:27 The boat traffic's what made it a center of commerce then, as it still is today.
16:32 But nowadays, it's better known as the home of a big university.
16:36Tutor Speaking of modern-day Ife, tell me about your trip.
16:40Terence I was incredibly lucky to be able to get enough money to go.
16:44 My parents encouraged me, but they couldn't afford to send me.
16:48 I applied for a grant (khoản trợ cấp) from the Arts Council, and in the end I got it.
16:53 I also wrote a series of articles about my trip for the local newspaper, but I didn't get any money for that.
16:59 I was just pleased to get them published.
17:01Tutor And the highlight of the trip?
17:03Terence That had to be meeting a professor working on the site in Ife who had been a young boy when they first discovered the sculptures (tác phẩm điêu khắc) by accident at a building site in 1938.
17:14 He had been working at the site.
17:17 Of course, I also got to talk to lots of artists who are working there today, and I got to try my hand at making a little sculpture (tác phẩm điêu khắc) myself.
17:28Narrator Before you hear the rest of the discussion, you have some time to look at questions 25 to 30.
18:05 Now listen and answer questions 25 to 30.
18:12Tutor Well, let's see what you might do to improve what you're planning for your presentation.
18:18 About the sculptures (tác phẩm điêu khắc) themselves, I think I need to add as much as possible about the details of the way they were made.
18:25Terence Of course, I can't add anything about the artists who made them because nobody really knows anything about them.
18:32Tutor All good points.
18:34 And you've certainly said enough about what the sculptures (tác phẩm điêu khắc) depict (miêu tả), uh, what the subjects are, that's well covered.
18:41 But I'd make some bigger photos of them so you can clearly see the fine detail.
18:47Terence Okay.
18:48Tutor And I would limit my personal reactions to these works of art if I were you.
18:53 I know you think they're fantastic.
18:56Terence You're right.
18:57 I'll contain my enthusiasm (sự nhiệt tình).
19:00Tutor What about the section of the presentation which I call history?
19:04Terence I'd like to go into more depth about the history of that whole area, you know, in the countries around Nigeria.
19:11Tutor That would make the presentation stronger, but I think you've covered the situation regarding the rulers of the country quite well, and you've got plenty already about what the Ife people were doing then and the way their society was structured (có cấu trúc).
19:28 And in fact, I think you could cut out the bit about modern Nigerian history because it's not relevant.
19:34Terence I agree, that doesn't fit.
19:36 But perhaps I should concentrate more on the religious beliefs since all these sculptures (tác phẩm điêu khắc) do seem to have some kind of religious association.
19:45Tutor Good, I can lend you a book on that.
19:48 Now, probably the part the class will find most interesting is the report of your trip to Nigeria and the research you did there.
19:57 So I gather you managed to use the university library in Ife?
20:01Terence Yes.
20:02 As soon as I'd explained why I wanted the information, that was no problem.
20:07 They couldn't have been more helpful.
20:09 There were some interesting accounts of how the first sculptures (tác phẩm điêu khắc) were found and what happened to them, which I want to include.
20:17 What struck me when I saw the sculptures (tác phẩm điêu khắc) in Nigeria is the extent to which 20th century European artists were influenced by them.
20:25 But that's beyond the scope of my presentation, I think.
20:29Tutor Yes.
20:30 What about the sources of the materials they used?
20:33 You don't mention that anywhere.
20:35Terence I didn't manage to find out much about that.
20:39 I want to cover the theories about who the original sculptors (nhà điêu khắc) were, though.
20:42Tutor Yes, the idea that a lot of them may have been made by the same person.
20:47 That's very interesting.
20:48Terence It is, isn't it?
20:50 Right, well, thanks for all the advice.
20:52 Now, I think I need to work...
20:57Narrator That is the end of part three.
20:59 You now have 30 seconds to check your answers to part three.

21:30Narrator Part four.
21:32 You will hear part of a lecture on the subject of why living in the city may be better for the environment than living in rural areas.
21:41 First, you have some time to look at questions 31 to 40.
22:36 Now listen carefully and answer questions 31 to 40.
22:43Lecturer Good morning, everyone.
22:44 Today we're looking at urban migration (di cư đô thị), the movement of people migrating (di cư) from outside cities into cities.
22:51 I think it's easy to jump to the conclusion that a rural lifestyle is greener.
22:55 However, recent studies have suggested otherwise.
22:58 First of all, if we take the land area of the Earth, the proportion (tỷ lệ) that cities take up is a mere 3%, and these same cities actually produce 30 to 40% of the carbon that is released into the atmosphere.
23:11 A lower amount than the 60 to 70% from non-urban areas.
23:16 Anyway, let's imagine that most people decide to migrate (di cư) to the city.
23:21 What kind of impact would that have?
23:24 For a start, this movement of people from the countryside should lift the pressure of intensive agriculture from the land, allowing forests to regenerate (tái sinh).
23:33 Another point in favor of urban migration (di cư đô thị) is that it can be far more energy-efficient if services are concentrated (tập trung) in the city, for example.
23:42 This is true for electricity, and as you can imagine, water.
23:46 Then, once you remember that rural communities are often very spread out, you can see yet another green reason to live in the city.
23:55 Rural citizens rely on the car to make their journeys far more than city dwellers who have other more environmentally friendly (thân thiện với môi trường) forms of transport that they can use, such as buses and trains.
24:05 The journeys tend to be shorter, too.
24:08 Yet another point in favor of urban migration (di cư đô thị) is the kind of recycling schemes (chương trình tái chế) that can only take place where the population (dân số) is concentrated (tập trung).
24:16 Take, for instance, Seattle in the USA, where methane gas is being put to good use and is generating energy for the city.
24:24 It's produced from the city's rubbish, which could not be collected so efficiently from rural areas.
24:30 Now, another factor that threatens the environment is the growing world population (dân số).
24:35 It's estimated that 75 million babies are now born every year, and in some countries, the birth rate (tỷ lệ sinh) shows no signs of slowing down.
24:43 Urban migration (di cư đô thị) may provide an answer here.
24:46 Now in cities, one of the reasons that women tend to have fewer children is that they get married later and start their families later.
24:54 And the reason for this is that it's far easier to find a job, and once you have one, to get a promotion.
25:01 So yes, the focus isn't on bearing children.
25:08 Well, it would be foolish to pretend that there are no downsides (nhược điểm) to urban living when clearly there are.
25:14 The thing that critics often mention is the idea that migrants (người di cư) may end up losing their culture, although some studies have found the opposite is true.
25:22 Rather than give up their traditions, people actually work hard to maintain (duy trì) them.
25:27 More evident is the fact that compared to the lower rate that is observed in rural areas, we can see that there is more crime occurring in cities.
25:35 There won't be many of us here today who can say we haven't been directly or indirectly affected by it.
25:42 There's another issue that we have to deal with.
25:44 So many cities, including our own, now suffer from high levels of pollution (ô nhiễm) so that the air we breathe is far from pure.
25:52 And another factor against the urban is greener idea is that urbanization often drives a country's economy.
25:59 Put simply, when there is greater wealth in society, more energy is consumed.
26:05 One of the direct effects of a stronger economy, something that many citizens will now experience every day and may well find stressful, is the amount of traffic on the road, despite the other options we mentioned earlier.
26:17 This is a problem that is not about to go away, although there are some solutions that could be considered.
26:22 Let's have a look at some of those...
26:27Narrator That is the end of part four.
26:29 You now have one minute to check your answers to part four.
27:34 That is the end of the listening test.
27:37 You now have 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the listening answer sheet.
35:43 You have two minutes left.
36:44 You have one minute left.
